The National Honor Society was an honorary association founded to recognize enthusiasm for scholarship, the development of character and leader- ship, and the desire to render service. Members were selected by a faculty vote on the basis of these characteristics. The students came from a field of all the juniors and seniors with a scholastic average of 3.2 or above. The society's motto was Nobelesse Oblige and the colors, blue and gold. Induction of new members took place in the auditorium on lVlarch 13, 1969. An organ prelude was played by Suzanne Byers as the student body and guests were seated. Reverend Leonard Solt of the Union Avenue United Methodist Church began the ceremony with the invocation. A speech was given by Dr. James Rodman of lVlount Union College. Lighted candles represented the four qualities which were explained by various members of the society. New members were then tapped with the gold key, repre- sentative of knowledge. Afterwards a reception for members and their parents was held in the library. ln November the society met to elect officers. They were Gary lVliddleton, president, Jim Donen- wirth, vice presidentg Stephanie Van Dress, secretary, and Val Woolf, treasurer. Other meetings were held to plan the spring induction of 1970.
