Adviser All man's achievements were traceable to one simple, basic factor: the ability to communicate his ideas to his fellow man. Not only was he able to communicate his ideas orally, but he was able to pre- serve and accumulate these ideas through the miracle of the written word. Reading, thinking, and writing were not only complementary and interconnected, but they were parts of a single process - communi- cation. The teachers of the English department stressed the importance and necessity of communi- cation. All processes of communicating, whether they were writing or speaking, reflected the students in- escapable individuality. Each teacher stressed the importance of the fundamental and objective prin- ciples of good writing and clear thinking. lVlrs, Helen Hodge headed the English department which was comprised of lVlrs. Special techniques, such as: films, lectures, debates, and topic discussions, were used to probe students' minds, to obtain insight of past experiences, and bring into being the association of the past, present, and future.
