Cross Country Has Best Season Ever CROSS COUNTRY-Front Row: Bob Schmucker, Bill Bastetter, Dennis Kapper, Jim Aquilo, Dick Wilkinson, Joe Beltz, Eugene Snyder. Back Row: Randy Reiter ilVlgr.l Barry Toussant, Jeff Bennett, Tom Spalding, Howard Henderson, Steve Hubbs, Steve Battershell, Gerry Larkins, The 1969 Cross Country team finished its season with an excellent 5-4 record. These runners worked hard as a team and won as a team. Because of this excellent teamwork the Dukes ran the best season in the history of the school. Dennis Kapper, the squad's IVIVP, and Eugene Snyder ran neck-and-neck through- out the season although Kapper set the new school record of ten minutes forty-nine seconds. This record was made by Kapper at a home meet with Louisville. Seniors on the team this year were John Nicholas and Bill Fiastetter. The co-captains were Kapper, a junior, and Rastetter. The Dukes proved how tough they were by qualifying for regional competition at Akron by copping fourth place in District action at Boardman. ln his first year of coaching Cross Country, lVlr. lVlarazza obviously did a fine job. He gave the boys encouragement and training and was rewarded by the exceptional performances of not only separate indivi- duals but also of the squad as one unit. The 300 Club has been installed for the training of next year's runners. This program is to keep the squad in shape to bring home more victories next year. Coach Lawrence lVlarazza lifts the team's spirits and coaches them toward a winning season.
