Teams Compete for First Time ef EIGHTH GRADE BASKETBALL-Front Row: Herbert Strong, Phil Stanga, Kirk Reiter, Scott Thomas, Ray Williamson, Mike Wyand, Todd Dysle, Robin Carr, Tom lVlathes, Ray Nicol, Randy Halverstadt, Randy Riley. Row 2: Tim Smith, George Jeffers, Todd l-lall, Greg Royer, Duane Hershberger, Bradley Bennett, Ricky Shaffer, Ken Tolerton, Kenneth The Eighth Grade basketball team consisted of 45 boys and was divided into two teams, both about equal in height and ability. The orange team was coached by lVlr. James Turner, and the other team, the black team, was coached by lVlr.Jed lVlewborn. The orange team played seven games and the black team participated in six. A combination of the two teams played in 5 scheduled games and one tournament game. The record for the games in which they played as a combined team was 4-1. Coach Turner felt that the teams played well together and should yield some good material for future varsity teams. The first year for tennis at lVlarlington was a year of learning and building for seasons to come. Although the record came out 1-3 for the season, the Dukes showed their competitive spirit and newly-found skills in every match. John Wasem, the sophomore team captain, remained undefeated in the first team singles division throughout the season as did the first team doubles comprised of Curt Taylor and the only senior on the team, Tom Richards. Baseball, Golf Challenge Athletes Coached by lVlr. Tom Havertield, the 1969 baseball squad strove to improve their season. The team had a tough schedule in the Federal League and ended the season with a 9-9 record tied for 3rd. Senior Rex Higgenbotham was lVlost Valuable Player, and Sophomore Lynn Kesterke set a new lVlarlington batting record of 422. Lynn also made first string on the Federal League All-Star squad. The team set a new lvlarlington record with 77 stolen bases.
