Bill Thomas takes the advantage over a Fairless wrestler. The wrestling team ended its fantastic season by placing second in the Federal League. Their final record was an outstanding one of 10-1-1. The reserve team ended its season with a perfect record of 12-0. Co-captains, Steve Taylor and lVlike Flinn, were undefeated in the 137 and 155 pound weight classes respectively. Jim Aquilo, a 98 pound junior grappler, also remained undefeated. The mightly mat squad sent 4 wrestlers to district competition in Akron after they qualified in sectional action at Louisville High School. Flinn, Taylor, and Aquilo were three of these, and tough sophomore Dick Wilkinson in the 107 pound weight class completed the foursome. Flinn and Taylor proved their superiority to any other wrestler in the area by copping the District Championships for their weight classes. Back Row Kent Walter Tom Boyce Dukes Meet Many Challenges This year the Varsity basketball team played well during the season according to Coach Roger Schnoke. lnexperience was the major cause for the lack of numerous wins throughout the season. Henry Simmons and Don Frank had not played much together during their freshman year, and each one had to adjust to having another big player on the same team. Gary Sherman was the leading scorer and was also the player that held the team together. Coach Schnoke felt that the Dukes were lacking on defense, not offense. They were third in the Federal League in scoring which proves they weren't lacking in offense. Rebounding was another place where there was room for improvement. Coach Schnoke felt that the team would be better next year since they would be more experienced in playing together, and also, they would have a better foundation with which to start. The Duke captain, Gary Sherman surpassed Luke Witte's scoring record for one game of 48, by scoring 49 points in a single game. Also, Gary was the leading scorer in Stark County this year.
