Football Squad Improves Season The Duke Grid Squad of 1969 scored high in enthusiasm, spirit, and drive. Coached by Mr. Joe Banks, who was new to the coaching staff, the team underwent many changes. It was a season of starting over and building up for the team, whose record ended up at 1-9. Considering the fact that the squad had many new players and had to adjust to the methods of a new coach, the record they compiled was good. Even though their record gives no appearance of an improvement, there were improvements of all sorts. Scoring was one department that improved tre- mendously. Few times did the Dukes fail to score throughout an entire game. Another was the way that the Dukes moved the ball. Running was much im- proved. The Offensive Lineman of the year was Reggie Valentine and the Defensive Lineman of the year was Dave Halverstadt. Willie Owens was the Most Valuable Player as well as the Offensive Back of the year. Mike Flinn per- formed well all season and was voted Defensive Back of the year. The Jim Muzzy Scholastic Achievement Award was awarded to senior Dean Swift.
