First grade is writing with big fat pencils A, B, C And catl' and Hdog' and 1,2,3 on special tablets With blue dotted lines. First grade is climbing on the jungle ym and Han 'ng by your knees to see what the world Looils like upside down. First grade is falling in love with the little boy On the second row who has black cowboy boots And no front teeth. First grade is when the day seems five years Long and everybody plays chase on the merry-go-round And shouts A'Kings', and Can't catch afleaongranma'sknee!H And everybody helps decorate the tree at Christmas and Slides on the ice and isn't it kind of sad that first Grade happens only once in a lifetimeg Elaine Gray THE OLD MAN The old man's weary His walls cracked and floors trod thin By countless footsteps. Drowse, old man and remember The many who have passed this way. Marlise Kupper MORNING Early morning sings With promises of new life As we harmonize. Marlise Kupper I'M A TREE' I'm a tree Look at me today Look at me yesterday and tomorrow I'm growing I'm changing I'm blooming I'm dying I'm green and supple I'm urnished and brittle Look at me, forever changing I'm a tree. Marlisc Kupper I-IONESTU We don't exactly go together hand in hand But I'm sure of one thing, itls my right hand. Some of our ideas aren't exactly the same But anything true you have to offer, Illl surely claim. Charles Lang A DISASTER Up in the air we all saw it. It was a plane and a man fell out ofitg we started running to see what was left When all of a sudden he sprouted a chute And he floated gently to eath. Stephen Schneider 'LICE CREAM SUNDAYH Father pumped the handle harder While Mama added salt. We ached for dinner silently Craving all the more dessert. Stuffed with chicken, dreading dishes'l, 1 watched as Mama dipped it. Out of the frosty bucket, into the bowls Shc towered the melting mountains. The throbbing pain of that first bite Brought memories of Cousin Freddy and his bet: We raced to gobble chocolate ice cream On Grandma's back porch step. Now snowy mounds in pools of cream Like the bowl I gave to Tom, my cat. The ice, too cold, he waited patiently for it to melt As patiently as watching a rathole at sunset. Only a little lump was le ft. I smiled and thought ofjohnny Devilishly dropping down my back a lump. I had screamed, then we laughedg and now I smile as I recall. Mama caught me smiling at my bowl. Is it good? she asked. But I could only grin and nod- Yes, it was good. Sherri Baker CI-IECKERSH What is life but a game of checkers? What is love but the crowning of a king- Then gettingjumped? Even races are there- All black or red. Moving from square to square to square- Ever shifting. And they disapper- One by one each checker is jumped And taken away. Then the game begins again-a new generation A new beginning with jumped kings, races, And disappearing checkers. Sheila Edmonds MY OWN WORLD The tires sing to me As I travel down the road With traffic flowing past me And me in my own world. Thinking of things, Past and future, Passes time faster For me on the road. Quiet country road With me all alone, I notice the birds And the distant horizon. Faster and faster, Then slowing down, Singing or dreaming, I go down the road. Ricky Muchow GRAFFITI While sitting in the library, With nothing else to do, I gazed down upon my desk top And in bold letters, read, , 'KTimothy loves Suel' I can't understand What people get out of it. To scratch and scribble On desks that once were clean. Who cares about: I was here on their desk? Then some person writes back: So was IU. People, use a sheet of paper. Kathy Walton HTOMORROW? WI-IO KNOWS? Today we are speaking Listen today. Don't wait to start thinking, Tomorrow's too late. Do good today While warm blood still flows. Though live we today Tomorrow? Who knows? Why does one worry About constant things? Since death is certain Need we fear and cringe? Why does one try To count his tomorrows, When always in counting He omits destined sorrows? Such as we have Should we use full measure. Things we have not Tend we more to treasure. Dolgood today Wh' e warm blood still flows 'Though live we today. Tomorrow? Who knows?
