As the sun sets on this Marlin High School building, with the dawn comes a vast awakening and a realization of a dream come true. That dream is the new high school. This old building, too, was once a dream come true for students not unlike ourselves. It had its be- ginning in 1917 under the architectural guidance of Fonzie E. Robertson. School board members at this time as listed on the cornerstone were: W. E. Hunnicutt, president, T. A. Cheeves, vice president, W. T. Goode, secretary, Tom Connally, J. G. Hollo- way, R. E. L. Tomlinson, J. C. Fountain, and A. C. Ferguson, superintendent. The school was originally built to house only 300 students, but Marlin's growth has made it necessary to extend the facilities. Through a successful bond election on March 6, 1971, this extension has been realized. Due to the efforts of students of Marlin High School and concerned citizens of Marlin, the issue passed favoring the construction of a new building. The new building will be located at the former E. G. Mier property at the east edge of the city limits. It will feature an auditorium, a gymnasium, and an area vocational-technical school. The new high school building will be carpeted, and air conditioned. Thus an era ends and an era begins for Marlin High School as we move on. ,GQ Q mfg 4 -in --my A ,, 4 ,M K W , wif' Nw x - .. x 3. Plagued by injuries the major portion of the year, the Canine cutters had their problems offensively. with the exception of two games, Ennis and Athens, Mar- lin's defense .limited the scoring of their opponents fairly well. Marlin opened their season against their old rival, the Rosebud-Lott Cougars. The first quarter was hard fought with Rosebud-Lott possibly having the edge. Then Marlin exploded in an impressive offensive at- tack, putting 20 points on the scoreboard and holding the stunned Cougars to 3 points. Although the Marlin defense did bend, it didn't break. Still high from their victory over Rosebud-Lott, and out to prove to sportswriters everywhere that they were for real, the Marlin Bulldogs tackled Gates- ville. During the first half, Marlin displayed an awe- some offensive power, moving the ball for two touchdowns in the half. They missed one extra point, and this gave them a 13-O halftime lead. At the beginning of the second half, the Hornets stung twiceg but the Bulldogs recovered in time to stop a two-point conversion which followed a missed extra point attempt earlier and salvaged a 13-12 victory over the Hornets. The following week the Bulldogs locked horns with Belton, and suffered their first defeat of the sea- son. The wet field slowed the Bulldogs, attack, and the Belton Tigers clenched the game with their hard hitting defense by a score of 14-6. 1. Coach Johnson, Coach Lindsey, Coach Arnwine. 2. Q Qs a 4 J L g a Q 1,3 still out to prove their validity, the Bulldogs took on the Midway Panthers and smoothly put them away 28-7. The old saying 'lightning never strikes twice was disproven three times in the following weeks. Lightning first struck at Athens. The defeat handed to Marlin by the Hornets was painful Q35-81, but the Bulldogs were still very much in the district running. With this thought in mind, the Bulldogs Went after the Jefferson-Moore Lions. A truly fired up group of men went to Waco with the intention of winning, but a comedy of mistakes, fumbles, and dropped passes cost the Bulldogs possi- bly the greatest upset victory of that week. Countless times the Bulldog receivers dropped passes. The Bull- dogs were defeated 13-12. The Ennis Lions, the number 3 team in the state, displayed their kingly qualities by simply overpower- ing the Bulldogs. The strong and powerful offensive line opened holes for the Ennis backs by putting practically all potential tacklers on the ground. By the time a Bulldog player recovered to make the tackle, the Lions had picked up substantial yardage. For the third straight week lightning struck. The final score was Ennis 29, Marlin 7. With the advent of the next Friday the dark clouds over Marlin began to clear. The Bulldogs went to Mexia. Despite homecoming, Halloween and a power failure, the Bulldogs emerged victorious over the Blackcats. With their last road game behind them, the Bull- dogs returned to Marlin, determined to plow the Mart Panthers under. Mart arrived in Marlin with a similar attitude. After properly tending to a monstrous back, Marlin, to the disappointment of the players and coaches, had to settle for a O-O tie. The Bulldog varsity closed its season against the LaVega Pirates. In a hard fought battle, the Dogs beat the Pirates 7-6. This was the Pack's first final game victory in 4 or 5 seasons. The team finished with a 5-3 district record and an over- all record of 17-10. According to Coach Jack Arnwine, this year's team made great strides. They had to overcome the psychological barrier that had been set up by Marlin's past losing records. The Bulldogs seemed to have overcome all barriers. In the Madisonville Tournament, the Dogs won the consolation trophy with post man Jimmy Kersten making the all-tournament team. The Bulldogs' quick and aggressive defense is cred- ited with guiding the team to a second-place finish in the district. James Cross was the top scorer with' 333 points for the season and 109 in district play. Leading rebound- ers were Cross, Kersten, and Larry Mitchell. The high- est number of points scored in one game was 92 against Athens. Kersten turned in 38 points for the highest individual 'scoring in one game.
