Robertson was the empresario who helped finance and was responsible for the colonization of what is now Falls County. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, he served in the War of 1812, and after a visit to Texas, decided to es- tablish a colony here He made his capital at the falls f the Brazos and named it Sarahville de Viesca He fought ln the battle of San Jacmto and later served in the first senate of the Republic of Texas He died in 1842 In 1833 Vlesca was located on a hill on the west s1de of the Brazos River, overlooklng the falls which at that time was a few miles southwest of the present falls This town was the first Anglo American settlement in what is now Falls County By 1852 the settlement, re named Fort Milam, was deserted although the name Viesca was preserved as that of another village near the present town of Cedar Springs People returning to the falls after the Runaway Scrape and the Battle of San Jacinto creatednew settlements on the east Slde of the falls to escape the Ind1ans One called Bucksnort existed about sixteen years Fort Marlln, the site of John Marlin s home was marked by aCentenn1al Memorial in 1936 In January 1839, Ind1ans massacred the Morgans and the Marlins s1xm1les north of the present city of Marlin, attacked the John Marlin home about three miles south of Marlin, defeated agroup of settlers under Capt B Bryant at Morgan s Point, and were themselves defeated at the Bird Creek battle near Temple Texas On January 28 1850 by an act of the state legislature Falls County was created It der1ved its name from the falls of the Brazos, about five miles southwest of the present town of Marlin The Act of the legislature designated the old town of V1esca as the county seat but in a county election the county seat was moved to Adams the land near the home of Dr Allens worth Adams now 305 Ward Street The name Adams was changed to Marlm in memory of the Marlm family involved in the Indian f1ght1ng in 1839 The Rev Z N Morrell, at right, was a m1n1ster who came Q to Texas to d1e of tuberculosis He did not d1e however Y untll he was eighty three He was the first minister to Kg. Curry's account of a private school states, 'One of the most exciting times of my life was the day that Pa entered me in Judge William Shelton's private school in Marlin, conducted in the Masonic Hall. Judge Shelton opened his school by reading the rules of conduct and showed us the big switch with which he intended to enforce his laws. 'We started the day off by having a lesson in spelling words called from the Blue Back Spglleg . . . Judge Shelton will ever be remembered as one of the greatest pedagogues of Falls County. If his students did not come up with their lessons, he had them stay after school and learn them.' Q11 Seeing the need for free education, the citizens of Marlin voted in 1882 to build a public school. Built in 1884, the first building was located north of the present post office on Coleman Street Later a school was built where the cotton compress now stands There was a fence around the school ground with stiles instead of gates The first graduating class was in 1892 The sixrnembers of this class were Bertie Bryden, Mary Conoly Nettie Falconer, Mattie Rice, Sallie Tomlinson and Emma Whitaker This school was destroyed by fire in 1900 on the day before classes were to begin In 1903 a fine new school building to accommodate all grades was built A picture of it is seen at the right The auditorium and several classrooms have been added since then In 1917 when Mr A C Ferguson was superintendent of schools the present high school building was completed, and the high school was moved from the older building In 1938 during the superintendency of Mr H J Mcllhany the gymnasium was constructed In the past year several new buildings have been added to the high school the industrial arts building the agricultural building, the band hall, the home economics department, and a school cafeteria Marlin High has beena member of the Southern Association of High Schools and Colleges since about 1912 As the school now begins an era of growth and expansion graduates have a heritage of which they can be very proud 1 Article by Marjorie Rogers quoted in The Daily Democrat Marl1n,Texas October 12 1942 published by Roy Eddms If 55 wsmiiffffif 'F' ' -1--L 'nu 'hw' 4 J i I ' ' ,' 1 .
