MURRICE SHELLANE GAS Mar1ef te, Ml.CAlg7d P110-n,0. 3711 cuss nlslunv In early September of 1940 a new arrival made its appearance in the Mar- lette Community School as the class of 53 . Only twenty-three of the class members who greeted that first dawn of knowledge made the grade. They are: Jay Brown, June Caroffino, Ken Chard, lla Christensen, Leona Forbes, Wayne Ford, Don Fraleigh, Duane Gerstenberger, Bob Hodge, Pat Howard, Wayne Jickling, Jim Knight, Russell Kraft, Barbara Miller, Mary Lou Nicol, Martin O'Shea, Joann Robinson, Margaret Rudd, Donald Smith, Jeanne Sullivan, Law- rence Turner, Junior VanEtten, and Grace Ann Wood. Little 53 grew by leaps and bounds until after an eighth grade trip to the Edison Institute, Greenfield Village, and a Tiger game, it was big enough to leap the threshold into high school. In that freshmen year under the watchful eyes of Jim Knight, President: Wayne Adam, Vice-Presidentg Doris Swailes, Secretary, and Don Smith, Treasurer, 53 took its first faltering steps past the terrors of Algebra and through the fears of Biology. Some of 53's first year was spent in futile attempts to escape the Initiation. It was then that 53 decided to wear always the class colors, blue and white, furthur ornamented by a red rose and live by the motto, We learn not for school but for life. A switch of helpers was in order as 53 entered it Sophomore year, Diane Oberle, President, Scott Ramsey, Vice-President, Luella Lamie, Sec- retaryg and June Caroffino, Treasurerg helped 53 turn the initiation loose on the defenseless lower classmen. The Twirp Dance, an unusual type of dance, was 53's first attempt at an all-high party. A more mature 53 , with Bob Hodge, Presidentg Scott Ramsey, Vice- President: Mary Lou Nicol, Secretaryg and Martin O'Shea, Treasurerg, em- barked upon a trip through the adventure of its Junior year. Professor How Could You, the Junior Play, the J-Hop, with its unusual under--sea decorat- ions, and the Jr. -Sr. Banquet were the highlights of this part of 53's life. With Martin O'Shea leading the way and Scott Ramsey, Margaret Rudd, and Wayne Adam following close behind, an excited 53 entered into the adven- tures of that once -in-a-lifetime thrill--a Senior Year. The Senior playg the Senior Prom, a profitable enterprise, the Senior Tea, with all the fineryg a fete by the Juniors at the Jr. -Sr. Banquet and the exciting Senior trip to New York led to the Class Day, Baccalaureate, and finally, Commencement where 53 in blue robes, received its passport to bigger and better things. - -Marilyn Marcin 78 3-T3 .
