New faces are continually appearing as the old ones fade out of the picture and into the World of adult- hood. The years at MHS serve as a proving ground from which each one of us endeavor to emerge as responsible citizens of our community. More than any other factor, the school influences and molds our lives into the type of person we will be in the future. With these words, we present this book to Markleville High School. The Seniors approached initiation day with much anxiety, but the Fresh- men didn't seem to know whether to look forward to the day or not. From cooking breakfast for the Seniors to singing We Love You Seniors , the Freshmen were thoroughly given an induction into MHS. Everything possible was put on their faces and in the hair of the Freshmen, which really stunk up the place. Through it all, the green Freshmen became full-fledged members of Markleville High School. Everyone, whether player or team-backer feels pride in the team and their accomplishments and proudly call the purple and white our team . MHS seems to bring to Indiana its own brand of Hoosier hysteria , coming from behind sev- eral times to win because of their Never give up attitude, an attitude which coach Karl Keller kept within the boys throughout the season. The team as a whole batted over .300 most of the season, losing only six games out of the 23 scheduled. The Arabians fine record placed them second in the tough White River Con- ference one game behind Highland. During one pe- riod of the season, the Arabians won twelve of thir- teen games having two six-game winning streaks. Voting by the team awarded Greg Fisher the Most Valuable Player award while voting of the WRC coaches placed Dickey and Fisher on the All-Con- ference Team. Coached by Paul Schoeff, the boys metwith other schools on the various golf courses in the area. The mem- bers of the team, in contrast with other sports, did not have to get in shape as far as running and other means of training. However, these boys met each night after school at a nearby golf course to practice hitting that little ball from the tees to the greens. These long hours provided the necessary golf experience needed to mold the boys into a team. The swing is one of the most important aspects of a good golf game as illustrated here by Bob Burmeister. ,rib F 4.-4 'Qu- ROW ONE: Sterling VanMatre, Student Manager, Bob Burmeister, Tom Heath, Ira Forney, Ray Hinchman Wayne Pasko, Daryl Wheatly, Jon Castor, Roy Bricker, Roger Creason, Student Manager. The job of Subscriptions Manager was handled by Jackie Johnson. O-fra jan W Putting together a high school yearbook is by no means an easy task. Work is not completed for the staff when the bell rings dismissing journalism class. It is really just the beginning. Before work can begin, advertise- ments must be sold to local business firms to cover part of the expense of printing the yearbook. The salesmen must have great determination to see enough to finance a good annual. After the work begins, it takes many evenings after school to complete the work. The camera club consisting of Paul Sabo, Tim Begley, Steve Whistler, Mark Mat- lock, Steve Cox, and Mr. Moore, the sponsor, aided the annual staff by taking many of the pictures used in the annual. Lana Boles, Co-editorg Ray Hinchman, Co-editorg Miss Duckworth, Advisorg Joan Wal- ters, Business Manager: Joyce Carpenter, Subscription Mana- ger. 5z20Q2ao0r5 0 ygrootzce ybjesf 57121211 The problems of putting a yearbook together are numerous: pictures to take and crop, lay- outs to visualize, copy to write, and of course deadlines to meet. But when the book is finally finished and returned, there is no comparison to the feeling of accomplishment when you see the product of those long hours after school. The job of keeping the records straight was left to Cheryl Fesmire, Business Manager. Steve Cox, Assistant Editor, checks the progress chart to assure that the staff is meeting their dead- lines. l.. Connie Mauzy, Editor, checks over a final copy of the Village Voice. This year the Village Voice Staff made several changes in an effort to enhance the newspaper. The journalism class felt that the Village Voice should appear more like a news- paper and less like a magazine. Therefore, the paper no longer had a cover page, but instead, had a nameplate and masthead. Each page of the paper consisted of three columns of print rather than two. Another significant alteration was the change from a monthly to a biweekly paper. This enabled the staff to put a larger a- mount of more current news in each issue. The purpose ofthe Village Voice was to extend an opportunity for students to express themxselvesg to voice communications of school policies, organizations, and other activities, and to provide interesting reading to the stu- dent body. Mike Mullin, Art Editor, works on a design at the mimeoscope. Mimeographing the final copy was the job of Randy Keesling. Uzmzye ozce CSXJ v fi' , 42 Editor ..... Assistant Editor . . The require- ments which make a student eligible are schol- arship, leadership, service, and character. To be eligible for the Honor Society, one must have at least a B average. Each fall and spring a list is compiled which includes each student in the upper two classes, who has main- tained this average. The teachers who have these candidates for induction in one of their classes vote on these people on the basis of the four requirements. The induction is a very se- rious ceremony by candlelight. This year, for the first time, tapping ceremonies were held at an alllschool convocation in order to demon- strate what a.n honor it is to be accepted into the National Honor Society. One of the functions of this busy group was planning of the Homecoming and queen corona- tion which was held on December 9 when the Arabians took on Union Tovsmship. The Student Council is always busy at the first few convo- cations trying to get everyone seated in his proper seat. Locker checks, in order to keep a cleaner and more efficient school, are also carried on by this group. The Student Council is definitely one of the more active of the MHS organizations. 45 Ep one ROW ONE: Sharon Mullens, Lana Boles, Debra Stohler. One of the highlights of the year for all Science Club mem- bers is the annual Science Fair. The Science Fair is a day during the year when members set up scientifically related dis- plays which are viewed by all grade school stu- dents. This has been a very successful project and has stimulated much interest in science. Field trips also provided an informative change of pace from the regular school day. For the first time this year, the Honart club had an art auction. As educational activities, the Honart club attended places of interest to the art students. Not only are the trips educational, but it also gives the students a time of fellowship. Membership for Honart is decided in art class. The students are given areas of work in all fields of art to widen their knowledge and capabilities. The finished works are graded on how hard they work and the quality of their work. With term papers and other projects which must be typed, typing is good to have in high school and is almost a necessity for college bound students. This class is also helpful for people wishing to become secretar- ies. The student secretaries at MHS get valuable experience by working in the various offices, and do the school a service by giving up their time to work for the school. The girls work in the principal's office, the guidance offices, and the athletic office. , Typing students work hard to achieve accuracy and speed. Once the basic skills are learned, the students are given more difficult typing problems to work. aa: 4 j if Lis'-'fi Mike Stohler demonstrates artificial respiration on Terry Clark. Which circle is darker? fOh, yes, if you used your scientific insight and folded the page to compare the circles, you discovered the unswerj Sure. You could make a guess. With a 50-50 chance of being right. But you know that success, in this age of science, takes more than guesswork. It takes careful observations. Accurate comparisons. Logical analysis. Sound deduction. These are traits we value at our new Engine ,cing and Research center in Anderson-e' A' -ve have the tools to implement them. For instance, if a real closeup of something is desirable, we pop it under our electronic microscope and magnify it up to 200,000 diameters. If we want to analyze materials for their metallic elements, we use a spectrograph, accurate to a few parts in a million. These help us in designing new ignition systems for cars. Or control devices for missiles. Or a new kind of generator. Look us up, after college, if you think you'll be at home in our field. Right back home in Indiana.
