Mrs. Niequist seriously discusses with her class the use of English. Keith Poteet asks Mrs. Niequist for some helpful information. Because any person's ability to read the printed page, to understand another's ideas, to express his own thoughts, and to communi- cate with other members of society is re- stricted by his knowledge and use of his own language, the English department's primary purpose is the development of these basic skills in each individual student to the limit of his potential. To a noble ambition for each student--a blending of essential skills with an under- standing of himself and his fellow man through a complete study of the English language in all its various aspects--the Markleville English department is dedicated. heritage and future Jim Surface listens attentively to instructions given by Miss Birkinbine in geometry. Whether we are counting minutes left in the day or the amount of money we need for the week- end, we cannot escape using math in our day to day life. To meet the challenges that are set be- fore us to solve, we seem to come across again and again the basic math we learn from the very beginning. For those showing special ability and inter- est, M. H. S. offered an advanced math program including classes in algebra I and II, plane geo- metry, trigonometry and senior math, and college math. Our mathematics department here at Markle- ville, is headed by two very capable teachers-- Miss Birkinbine and Mr. Markle. These two per- sons have done much to further the interest in math and better the students here at Markleville. 441' ir. The fundamentals of math seem fascinating to Debbie Stohler. Mr. Markle explains an algebra problem while Phil Mullins looks on. We learn from the past. . . Improve for the future A class listens attentively as Mr. Kellerinstructs them in history class. In U.S. history, students study about our country from the very beginning. The history department strives to teach students the operations, methods, and princi- ples of our government so that they will be able to meet its prob- lems and recognize other gov- ernments which might be harm- ful to our fre edoms. It also strives to teach students how to meet and cope with the problems of to m o r r ow and to live better with our neighbors. we 5555 rrl gg , Deeann Kinsey and Noel Davis are learning the correct Mr. Keller and Barry Banks are looking for way to use the globe. Timbuktu,! ! ! 26 The formulas for our lives are in this room With the addition of new microscopes, a manikin, charts, and incubator, and other items of equipment, more student interest is being developed and the field of know- ledge widened. Finances must be established, pages have to correspond in the spreads, pictures must be taken and identified, and copy proof-read time and time again. Karin Bronnenberg, assistant editor, Marilyn Dickey, business manager, and Sharon Elrod, subscriptions have been very steadfast to our goal--the final draft of the ARABIAN. Even when the going was rough and it seemed utterly im- possible that we would meet our dead- lines, we worked in journalism class, after school, and on Saturdays and, through some miracle, pulled through. Miss Ellis gave her assistance and advice to us and was very helpful to our cause. There have been many anxieties whetherthe ARABIAN wouldbe accepted. However, the mere joy of giving the com- munity something to cherish the rest of their lives is enough satisfaction to calm all the tattered nerves. You're a self-starter who takes pleasure in tackling problems. CWe know because you just didlj That gives us something in common. We at Delco-Remy are always solving puzzles, looking into the unknown for answers that can improve our products. And why not? We're geared for it. Our new Engineering and Research facility in Ander- son provides our problem-probing team with the most completely equipped center of its kind in the world- including an electron microscope that can magnify samples up to 200,000 diameters ...and a spectrograph that enables us to analyze materials for their metallic elements to an accuracy of one part in a million. Maybe you'd like to develop things like electronic ignition systems for cars or control devices for missiles. The challenge is great, of course. But so are the rewards and accomplishments. If you feel at home in Indiana . . . and in a scientitic atmosphere, you'lI be right at home at Delco-Remy. Look us up after college. We'Il keep a couple of prob- lems on ice for you.
