AWARD Each year the senior students choose by vote three girls in their class who possess the following qualities to an outstanding degree: ill De- pendability-which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality. C27 Service-cooperation, courtesy, consideration of others. 133 Leadership- personality, self control, ability to assume responsibility. U11 Patriotism- unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation. From the three girls elected, the school faculty selects the one who becomes the Good Citizen of the School. The winner for the 1953-54 school year was Arthenia Seal. She not only represented Markleville, but went ahead to Win the County, winning an award and a certificate of award. .4-w'Qf?,.., 1,0 Boys State is a function sponsored by the American Legion. Its pur pose is to give boys experience on government and help them in social activities. At Boys State, a mock state and local government is set up. The boys attending are elected to offices and everything is done as in real state and local government. Other activities are sports, in which any boy can participate, or just talk and get acquainted with the boys. Honor cities are chosen from the eight fictitious cities. set up for the purpose of the government. The winners are awarded ribbons. Boys are chosen to attend by their scholastic achievements. leader- ship. ability to mix with others, and personality. Marklevillcfs representative in l953 was Gary Bond. He attended a week long activity at Indiana State School for the Deaf in Indianapolis.
