Curriculum, cmd policies: moin cidminisrrcition iob The five-member Marked Tree school board met frequently during the school year to deliberate and make deci- sions and policies pertaining to the wel- fare of the combined high school and ele- mentary district. Each member serves for a term of five years, with an election scheduled every fall. One member is elected, hence the desired continuity of policy and knowledge is retained by a body continually veteran in makeup. New mem- bers this year were Dr. V. B. Smith and Miles Collier, who took the place of W. R Payne and Mack Crow. Under the general heading of supervising education fall many important tasks: planning the budget, en- dorsing curriculum changes, and deter- mining school policies. It also oversaw the employment and dismissal of adminis- trative officials, teachers, and personnel, and provision of adequate facilities. The Board of Education plays a great role in maintaining the high educational standards in the Marked Tree school system. High School Principal, Mr. L. O. Ramsey, plans with Board of Edu cation, enforces discipline, and files permanent records, Lives of great men, all re- mind us. . . Wrote Longfellow in his poem Psalm of Life . lVlen's mistakes, men's triumphs, men's thoughts, men's deeds--good or bad--should serve as a guiding light for us when We leave school and compete in the trying World of the sixties. A World of unrest, revolution, discovery, boom, pov- erty, and above all, a World that lays before us a challenge. We have been lead through this World so far by our parents, our teachers, and our counselors. They have helped us in time of need. But these guardians will not be there to protect and guide us when it comes our time to enter the world of politics and business. We must prepare, with the help of others, to accept the respon- sibility of this whirling sphere we live on. As those before have met the challenge, We must, also. Where they lived in the Air Age, we live in a new, unknown age--the atomic age. A era where the atom thrives in its remoteness. A degree of time where more questions are popping up than we have answers for. An hour of destiny that calls for a knowledge of compas ses and protractors, bunsen burners and Florence flasks, slide rules and atomic charts. It is also a time when men must use pencil and paper along with his greatest gift--his brain--small in mass but large in concept. Due to the efforts of Mrs. Lillard, our library is well Through use of school lingual console, Mrs, Key can organized and equipped with newspapers, magazines help students accomplish more by listening to them and a variety of books. individually over the earphones without interruption. UQ? I LANGUAGE ARTS, FINE ARTS, LIBRARY V.- w Jbtrts teach means of successful communication Q V s Mrs, W.G. Key Mrs, M. Lovell Frank Dyer Miss Judith Robertson Neil Peevey English English English English Band Director French Choir Director Reading, writing, and speaking are everyday needs. But these three essentials are not the only facets of grammatical learning. English extends from the dia- graming of a complex sentence to the read- ing of a Shakespearean drama, from the writing of a research theme to the reciting of The Raven . MTHS students study English each year so that they may com- municate easier in the changing world around them. To actually understand foreign people and their customs, one must have a work- ing knowledge of their language. Three years of French is taught in ascending levels of grammar, mechanics, conversa- tion, and reading. It would be hard to write a research theme or to learn anything if one didn't have books. But one cannot have every book he needs. The library is a store- house of encyclopedias, novels, and books of all descriptions. It is an arsenal of written works. Communication, however, does not end with the spoken and written word but includes a third language. This third lan- guage is music, the universal language . Music has been said to be 'that undefinable link between countries, between cultures, and between peoples. ' Mrs W Comstock Mrs. W, Lillard Study H111 X Librarian . rx . Miss Moore also suggests ideas for home projects and ways to improve the home. Vocational agriculture trains boys who are interested in farming or related agriculture occupations by making them more proficient in the mechanical skills, technical knowledge, and managerial ability. Demonstrations, farm mechanics, and supervised farming programs provided practical application of the information learned. JUNIORS Junior Year The '64-'65 year was a tedious year for the Juniors. One moneymaking pro- ject followed another, it was work, work, work to make money for the Jr. -Sr. Ban- quet and Prom. They started the year with a bang, by promoting a cake-walk followed by the selling of candy for Hallo- ween treats. They also sold pennants, sweatshirts, and oven-cleaner. In the Spring, when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love, they sold candy for Valentines, followed by a spaghetti supper. Then the word P-R-O-M took on a new meaning, more work. The creating of a theme and working it into decorations, menus, and speeches kept them busy the remaining portion of the year. Through all of this bossing from Mr. and Mrs. Penney, door to door selling, waiting on tables, and being interior dec- orators, they found time, though it seems impossible, to study. is filled with excitement. He was student di-rector and President of the Band. Dianna Brunner's skill in twirling won her the title of Drum Majorette of this region at Arkansas State Twirling Clinic. Carroll Maddox and Ricky Leathers were awarded trophies for being the outstand- ing players in the Junior and Senior Invitation- al Tournament at Osceola. The Betty Crocker Homemaking Award was won by Barbara Key for making the Highest grades on the test. She was also awarded the good citizenship award by the Daughters of the American Revolution. While at Girls' State, Marilee Byers was one of the two girls of Arkansas selected to go to Girls' Nation in Washington, D. C. She was chosen by the councilors to repre- sent Arkansas with the knowledge of govern- ment she had obtained while at Girls' State. It is a great honor for Marilee as well as a great honor for the school. Everett Tucker's natural comical ways gained him recognition as Best Actor, while Sandy McDaniel won the title of Best Actress in her well-played role. Events throughout the year are captured by our photographer, to which copy is added to support these basic elements of the year- book. The book is financed through the selling of the books and advertisement from the busi- nesses of the surrounding area. Planning a better yearbook takes new ideas and creative thinking of the members along with coop- eration from the student body, faculty, and administration. The Yearbook staff met and conquered many challenges in the process of producing this '64-'65 edition of the Pow-Wow. Happiness, Sadness, Success and Failure all bound Susan Feathersron Business Manager Barbara Key Sec, and Treas. l l Tim Norton and Mrs, Faucett, Sponsor, outline pictures for Mike Watson to take, Ronny Becker, Jana Walker, Patricia Thielemier Tony Huddleston, and Linda Turner type and proof-read the pages before final shipment. with work cmd covered with pride. Susan Sims, Janet Thompson, Sara Davis, Sharon Lassiter, Ralph Walker, and Kathy Bragg plan lay outs and draw them on dummy sheets. Tim Norton, President, and Mr. Sain Mullins, sponsor, fill out final order for the school flag. The priceless rights of free speech, free assemblage, and free- dom to participate in voluntary groups are denied millions of human beings in the World today. In America, how- ever, these freedoms are flourishing. They will continue to exist and grow stronger only as they are exercised. Our student activity groups are our greatest phenomenon. They de- serve our best efforts. Their purpose was to ready themselves for the meeting of a challenge--the production of a yearbook. ' Now it's finished--a book woven around the pursuits of the students. We chose this theme because we thought it typified Marked Tree High School. We thank the administration, faculty, student body and all persons who helped us to produce this book for you. We hope you enjoy this book and it will keep memories of the 1964- 65 school year close in your minds. Tim Norton, Editor Judy Young, Assistant Editor W E HURLEY fl 4 . ,.
