Her ca- reer as a classroom teacher ends this year at Keppel. But her influence will live through all of her students. Miss Malone retries in a glow of satisfaction that her job with the young people of Mark Keppel was filled with warm and friendly feel- ings. We dedicate this book with humble thanks for a unique and kind person. The American Field Service brought Wern from Frankfurt, Germany, to Alhambra-where he became a member of the Joseph N. Covell family. We are all happy to have had the opportunity to have Wern as a class- mate. He has been a credit to Mark Keppel by earning a Varsity letter in Cross Country and maintaining better than average grades. ln his warm and friendly manner, Wern has increased our knowledge of his native Germany by lecturing at club meetings, assemblies, and writing for the Aztec . The students of Mark Keppel will always remember Wern, and hope that he enjoyed his stay with us. We extend a warm welcome to him, a sincere thank you to the American Field Service, and our recognition to cultural exchange. Good-bye, Wern, we hope to see you again soon-be it in Alhambra or in Frankfurt-am-Maine. S A -I ocal I I Q -75: r is 5 T Q? An abstract is usually obtained by selecting what is essential. Generally speaking, the process of rob- straction is usually a process of selection of some part or aspect of a complex entirety. ln the field of art an abstraction is the result of the artist's understanding of the subject. In this annual, the theme, Aztec Abstracts, represents both of these interpretations. The editors have selec- Lawson They have selected from the many experiences, social and educational, the real meaning of the year T959 at Mark Keppel. As an artist they have related these events in' the following pages with the color, verve, and excite- ment ofthe school year. Kemp Miss Arzt GIRLS' VICE PRINCIPAL A Chemistry teacher for ten years, and now Girls' Vice Principal, Miss Marion Arzt adds to the already superior faculty at Mark Keppel High School. During her years here as Vice Principal, hundreds of girls have sought her confidence and have found comfort in her words. The words she speaks must be chosen and delivered with great care. A wrong phrase or sentence may prompt a troubled girl to seek advice from a less qualified source - while the help she could give might solve the teen-age girl's problem. Miss Arzt guides these young girls who come to her, and administers discipline with tact and understanding. She has done her best and it has resulted in well rounded personalities. Her work is very difficult, but she is rewarded in many ways. Helping to solve the problems of troubled girls is a reward in itself. BOYS' VICE PRINCIPAL Mr. Kemp's famous, friendly smile is known to all of the organizations and students who seek his advice throughout the year. lAfter all, it brought him First Place in the faculty talent show Beauty Contest.l I want to see all of you at the game, is a familiar sound, because whenispeaking to an assembly or to a student per- sonally, Mr. Kemp can always inspire spirit and pride in Mark Keppel. As our Boys' Vice Principal, he strengthens school harmony. He counsels, and works in co-operation with most student organizations and assists Mr. Lawson in every way possible. When daily problems arise, Mr. Kemp is amicable and al- ways finds time to listen with sympathy. His decisions are made with fairness and care. Mr. Kemp shows us his confidence in many ways - his pride in the school by appearing at all events and rooting for Keppel along with the students. He has shown again and again that his sincerest interest is in the students' welfare, present and future. Mrs. Bennett In the spring of '58, Mrs. Dorothy Bennett was first in- troduced to the class which she will counsel through their years at Keppel. She helped them last year and this to schedule their classes for the following year. Besides answering the many questions of her class during their important freshman year, Mrs. Bennett helped to initiate the Senior Honor Society and was instrumental in setting up scholarship programs. iilll QDKHMHH 2Ml ill-2 Mr. Freeman Mr. Freeman, tenth year counselor will soon enter into the position of an upper classman . Now the freshmen of last year have gained a new ma- turity and his duties increase while his worries lessen. Of course the never ending problem of schedules and subjects are still with him, but the confusion and difficul- ties are not so intense. He has helped his students to be- come familiar with Mark Keppel and her subjects. But, as in every case, as some problems subside, others arise. He will meet these as they come, and send his stu- dents into the world fully prepared for the difficulties they may meet there. M r. Anderson Mr. Anderson, the llth year counselor, was especially busy this year. The class, under his guidance, received much attention and time. Subiects for their 12th year must be chosen with care, for a right choice may lead to a successful and fullfilling life. Then college too is an important decision for many iun- iors to make. Which college to go to is the maior ques- tion. The right college for the right person is essential to the well-being of all concerned. Mr. Anderson is doing a highly successful iob. The iun- iors appreciate his understanding and his advice and have become better students for the asking. He is doing his best to help to make his class a credit to themselves and their school. Miss Busher The 12th year counselor, Miss Busher, has, this year, the most difficult iob of all. She is concerned with graduating seniors-students that are now embarking on careers or entering colleges. The many things that associate themselves with the life of a senior, associate themselves with her. She has work- ed hard for four years to reach this goal-and now it has arrived. Her class of '59 will never forget her. They participate in the annual Student Congress sponsored by the Southern California Debate League, and also take part in oratorical competition in the community. The National Forensic League is, indeed, one of the most im- portant of our goodwill ambassadors, and has won much recognition for Mark Keppel. i Standing: Qichard Steers, Mike Leff, Loren Webster, Joe Riley, Art Fine, Dave Kahn, Ron Steers, Richard Drutrnan, Sitting Nancy Humble, Sandy Shliff, Carol Humble. Debate Team The challenge of stimulating argumentation is met by the capable members of the Mark Keppel Debate Team. In competition throughout Southern California these interscholastic orators have distinguished themselves in all fields of public speaking. Our Debate Team has gained a better understanding of international problems in debating the British educational system, and topics for other events have proved equally enlightening. The many hours devoted to preparation by Keppel's debaters have been well rewarded, their time and efforts were well-spent, Standing: Foster Hirsch, Jim Danziger, Gary Sterling, Alan Silver, Steve Hamilton, Ed Calhoon, Jim Kane, Don Smith, advisor, Sitting: Jeanne Carroll, Shirley Seip, Sally Shliff. ,Q .- ---- U ' .- .4-' . .Wm Qavvaua- A-lr' - ,,r,,.1.-. , 1-t .,,.,p ,..,,,, ...,, ...ur - vs-sf lib 'Q Y . The problems received from the students are thoroughly discussed and every aspect is carefully investigated. When a final decision is reached by the Council, it is delivered to the Cabinet through the Speaker of the Representative Council, this year- Jeannie Trembley. This decision is always unbiased, fair, and the result of wisely used time. Each member of the council is carefully selected in order to provide the students with an efficient body of legislators and to provide a truly democratic form of student government. In this way, no complaint of the student is overlooked, and the gov- ernment is placed in the hands of the students themselves. The iob is a difficult one, but the benefits reaped are manifold. Keppel got off to a slow start with a half time score of 7-O in favor of the Tornadoes. The end of the game saw the Aztecs on the short end of a 9-7 score. Aztec of the Week was Dean Rogers. This year was the first season that we played the La Puente Warriors. Although the game was filled with excitement, and each team got within inches of the goal line, neither side was suc- cessful in scoring, and at the sound of the gun the score remained O-O. The efforts of Frank Poppie won him the honor of Aztec of the Week. fri- Don Moore Frank Poppie 0-1 ,Mar J A, A ' Bill Stewart 2 i' jg 1. Our touchdown was made from the Matador I8 yard line by Bill Garcia, and Tommy Hammond kicked for, and made, the extra point. As the final gun shot sounded, the score still stood at 7-O in favor of Keppel, and for the third straight year the Mat- ador hatchet remained in the Aztec Trophy case, thus signifying the victory of the Aztecs. Aztec of the Week-Al Ferris. Ellis Haskell Jack Lowery ROSEMEAD The Mark Keppel Aztecs won their second straight game of the 1958 season in the final practice scramble a g a i n st the Rosemead Panthers. Both Jack Lowery and Bill Garcia made touchdowns and at the half the score stood at 18-O. In the second half the Panthers broke through for their only TD. Keppel continued with their scoring drive, and the end of the game saw the Aztecs on top of 39-14 final score. Throughout the muddy game the Lions continued swimming over the water-logged Aztecs on what looked more like a swimming pool than a football field. At the half the Lions had rolled up 21 points, and by the final click of the clock had gathered 34 points against the scoreless Aztecs. Through his consistent efforts to halt the Lions, Jack Lowery gained the honor of Aztec of the Week. ALHAMBRA By the time the ball was ready to be kicked for the start of the annual Keppel-Alhambra tilt, a crowd of over eight thousand fans gathered to- cheer the teams on to victory. As each school entered their fourth league game, they were without a win, and each was battling to see that the other was put in the cellar. The Moors had the luck of scoring the first points in the top half, and the Aztecs trailed on the 7-0 first half total. In the third quarter, Keppel took pos- session of the ball on their own 26, as AHS was forced to punt. The determined Aztecs refused to stop until they had moved the ball against the goal line for the first Aztec score. The Aztecs again got moving in the fourth quarter and made another score, putting them in front of the Moors 13-7. The Moors quickly retaliated by putting the ball over the line, making the game a 13-13 tie. Thus ended the Keppel-Alhambra tilt in the third tie of the twenty year rivalry. Aztec of the Week was Paul Baldwin, who made both touchdowns. MONROVIA After a first quarter lead by fast running Mon- rovia Wildcats, Keppel came to life upon real- izing that 12 points had been tallied against them. Keppel went to work after a 40 yard Az- tec pass, but failed to grab the extra point. At the half the score was 19-6 and the Wildcats continued adding to their lead against the in- iury-stricken Aztec squad. Bill Stewart was named Aztec of the Week for the game that ended in a score of 40-6 in favor of Monrovia. ARCADIA In the annual war between the Indians, the Apaches of Arcadia got off to a good start and began their scoring plays in the first quarter. They again toppled the Aztecs for a score in the second quarter, and the score at halftime was 18-0. In the second half the Aztecs completed a pass for their first 7 points. As the clock showed less than two minutes to play the Kep- pel squad tumbled over the goal line for their second 7 points. The game ended with the Apaches winning their first victory over the Aztecs with a 37-14 score. The Aztec of the Week was Allen Palmer. WHITTIER For the final pigskin challenge of the 1958 sea- son, the Mark Keppel Aztecs faced the Whittier Cardinals with no league wins on their record. After a slow start, the Aztecs got moving and by the half had 7 points to their credit. Continuing the procedure in the second quarter, the Aztecs turned an intercepted pass and 75 yard dash into 6 more points for a 13-0 lead until the Cards made a touchdown in the last seconds iust be- fore the end of the first half. In the fourth quar- ter, Whittier scored 7 more points to tie up the game. Both teams battled on to gain an ad- vantage and Whittier was successful in break- ing through for another 7 points, and the game ended with the Aztecs on the bottom of the 20- 13 score. With dauntless courage and unlimited vigor they drove on to capture ist place in the Navy Bean Bowl playoff. The exciting season was highlighted by many momentous events as when one player mistook a referee in a striped shirt for a beanbag and threw him 29 yards for a grand slam point plopper. But this marvelous team wasn't developed overnight .... Coach Brown with his superior training program and 8' loullwhip made them work, work, work. Two hours every day, before and after school, they sat around throwing the bag. He gave them a strict diet of nothing 'but Rice K'rispies with yogurt, prunes, and sulfured molasses, They also had a list of tough daily exer- cises, such as getting up in the morning. ln many cases the training program was so strenuous that several players had to omit their academ- ic activities entirely, but it must be remembered that it was for the good of the team. The club enables them to deter- mine this field and also answer the all important question, ls teaching right for me? The need for efficiently trained instruc- tors in America's schools is urgent. The members are working and hoping to become civic-minded citizens and to help Amer- ica solve this important problem. The education of future gen- erations is in your hands, Future Teachers! One of the first clubs on campus, the Future Teachers is dedi- cated to the profession of teaching. They visit schools and classes and discuss the methods and procedures of teaching. Our Ameri- can schools are important in our democratic society. Future Teach- ers plan and study the profession in which they are interested Under the direction of Mrs. Castle, the school nurse, the Future Nurses have had a big year. We' the staff and I, defined abstract as vague, misty, but yet concise . Then our task was to shape this theme into a workable idea. We decided that the abstracts would be all the parts of the book-the classes, clubs, administra- tion, sports, and social events-in short, the high points of the year. Then the book as a whole would bind rnese abstracts together and bring them all into clear focus, presenting a memory- filled picture of 1958-1959 school life, and, with this, our purpose has been achieved. There are so many people l'd rather like to thank for their co-operation and help: Mr. Phil Charis for his beautiful Senior pictures and his willingness to help us out in other sections. of Teocalli, Ann Vergho and Sandy Shliff who both stayed late many nights to help me and who were always there when needed, Carol and Nancy Humble who were both so ready and willing to'write copy, my very understanding parents, and especially my most wonderful ad- visor, Mr. Ted Kilman. And that doesn't even begin to include the many other people, staff and advisors, who generously contributed their time and energy to make this year's Teocalli the success that it is. In concluding this Swan Song, l'd like to say that it has been a pleasure, a privilege, and several nervous breakdowns lone for each of the deadlinesl to serve you as Editor of the Teocalli. Seriously, l want to thank everyone here at Keppel for giving me the opportunity of being Secretary of Literature on Cabinet this year. There are so many things to learn and new ideas to be found in producing a yearbook that it's hard to say anything but-thank you all so very much! Have a fabulous summer, and l'll see you next year . . .
