'lux X, ACT I Clarence: Oh, mother, dear, hear the story l have to tell Of this amazing land from whence l've come. Mother: But before you relate your day's account, Please supply a sufficient reason For the redness of your face And the odor of your hair. For to be sure this is not the familiar face l am wont to regard every day. Clarence: Truly, Mother, l must have been blessed, For only a few were given the honor Of being scrubbed with lipstick And drenched with garlic oil. Mother: Tell me more of this strange, new place Where these mysterious rites are held. Clarence: From the beginning l shall start: On entering this fabulous domain There loomed before my dazed eyes A huge, white structure with broad, clean lawns. Around which place continually zoomed l-lopped-up hot rods And souped-up jalops. lnside the building l saw a different scene: No sounds are heard in its eery, ghost-like halls, Never a voice is heard nor a footstep falls. All action, l have found, is centered in cell-like rooms. But l am sure l shall like this place: l can hardly wait to go back tomorrow. ll Page 39 A5 x S3 EA y E xi r : I A K E t ks .kx. t if X' X swi X 3 X X X f B X 2 , - X X is r i i I' 14 . No longer shall l be derided and laughed at, For now l'll take my revenge on those taking my place. Armed with this tube of lipstick in my hand, l'll swoop down on the next freshman who enters the halls. But, hark, this fair maiden who comes before me. What could cause the perplexion marked on her brows? Rosalind: Uh, dear sir, woe is me! l am new here as you can see, But search as l will l cannot find These famed elevators of which l have been told. Canst thou take pity on poor little me And offer shelter for my perplexed soul Which more and more becomes confused by the hour By the villainous attempts of others to disuade me? Clarence: Cfksidel Who could fail to yield to this damsel in distress With her weary frame and melting gaze? Albeit l must postpone my plans for the day, My conscience pleads that l do her bidding. CTo herb Ch, maiden, innocent and dear, Entrust your cares to me, your peer, You are too beautiful by far to go to your classes alone. Rosalind: Kind sir, my thanks are boundless, For a true friend l have found at last. The memory of this deed l shall entreasure for- ever, Lock it in my heart that it may never fade away. Thus has this process always been: The active resistance of students To our passive standards of authority. Tho' buffeted by storms of their revolt, lmmutable We shall stand as always Like a lighthouse 'midst a surging tide of students. Clarence and Rosalind will find That they have only begun their drama, That they have only experienced here The first scene of the first act Cf the play they will have to enact. What many surprises they'll have ahead, What changes of costume they'll make! Changes will have to be made in the script, The blocking will change from time to time. Cn the opening night of performance, Let us hope they'll remember their lines. When the curtain comes down on the final act, Let us hope that their audience will applaud That they may feel their performance was not in vain.
