Mark Keppel this year has had an exceptionally fine faculty, with many of our teachers returning veterans after serving with Uncle Sam. The position of principal has been capably filled by Bruce M. Lawson, and with the help of Mrs. Ianet White, Girls' Vice-Principal, and Mr. Peel, Boys' Vice-Principal, our past school year has been efficiently and successfully directed. Then, too, our teachers should be proud of the excel- lent help they have given to the overcrowded classes, not only in our subjects but also by sponsoring our clubs. Because of this untiring effort of the faculty, the entire Student Body is grateful. . , llijm , 'N s SEX'-1V 6 ir -- A' X y gf M45 fu, I fi --, 5 5-5 -. I ,x t.,, l 4 K U . Action occurs in the home ot Roscoe Crosby, Where a seance has been arranged with Madame LaGrange, a medium, to determine the murderer of a friend. The occupant of the thirteenth chair, Edward Wales, a guest, is fatally stabbed during the seance. Detective lim Donahue is called in to solve the mystery. The characters were aptly portrayed by a Well chosen cast. The action occurs in Santa Barbara at the swank home of the Griffiths. Mrs. Griffith is excited over the visit of T. Bookington fBookyJ Wells, a rich bachelor, to Whom she is desirous of marrying her daughter Carolyne. Amid this excitement she forgets the expected arrival from school of her children, Io and Bud, who bring home a guest, a swimming champion named Erp. Confusion exists upon the arrival of a distant cousin Arabella, Grandmother Maude's polo playing friends, and many unidentified people who seem to just drift around. Through all this Mr. Griffith worries over his business which is steadily declining. The climax comes when Arabella and Booky fall in love with each other While pursuing lo and Erp Who have eloped. Upon the return of the newly-married couples, Arabella aids Mr. Griffith With his financial difficulties and the play ends with everybody happy. POSITION That last touchdown was made by center Tom Garcia, who intercepted the pass on the 31 yard line, and went over for the touchdown. Nice blocking by Fred Aquirre, Bill Reeder, Doug Elgar and Dave Leyrer aided in setting up that score .... The teams are set for the conversion. Bob Woolverton will hold, Garcia will do the kicking. The ball is down, up in the air, the kick is good and the score now in the third quarter of this ball game is Keppel 21, Santa Barbara G. So it was-the excitement and color, the thrills and heartbreaks of another Aztec season were commonplace at the old Alma lJia.er and went to make up the enjoyable moments of Keppel football in l946. With the return of Iohn Seixas and Ed Austn to the Hellman coaching staff, what could have been a season of dismal defeats was turned into a fairly successful year for all concerned. After a quick win over Iohn Muir's Mustangs, the Keppel crew of powerful line- men and some fair backs met their exact opposites in South Pasadena. The locals succeeded in pushing the Tigers all over the turf but were unable to conquer SP's Buffington, therefore they were defeated in the closing minutes. Then followed an upset defeat presented to the Aztecs by the El Monte Lions, who won by the margin of a safety. Three league teams, Whittier, Long Beach Poly, and Long Beach Wilson, were next on the Maroon schedule, and our Keppel eleven, emerged from these struggles with a 5072 average, one win, one loss, and a tie. Excelsior and Santa Barbara followed with the home town crew looking better all the time. They won both tilts. The big undefeated C.l.F. champion, Moor, loomed at that time, however, and Keppel fought but fell to their yellow clad rivals. So ended the season, four wins, four losses, and one tie, with lots to look forward to next season. Coach Seixcts Coach Austin .i Cggootball gf' W I. V. BROWN GAIN LEAGUE HONORS Blynn Wilson, head coach, looked slightly down cast when his boys dropped their first game to a mediocre Compton crew. There were very few of these expres- sions gracing mentor Wilson's Visage during the remainder of the season, for just as soon as Bing Bordier, Bob Hunt, Iack Greco, and Byron Batcheller started snagging passes from Norm Brown, as soon as Dick Beach, Ed I-loltzclaw, Captain Dick Mitchell, Gerald Hazzard, Iim Dye and Bud LaMonk started opening holes for backs, Bill Styers, Gene McEver, Bob Bersanconi, Bob Perry, lim Brown and Ben Bustillos, they clicked . Consequently, when Wilson's modified T and box formations were thrown in, the boys systematically ran over everything in the Pacific League. Following the Compton loss, the Middies tangled with South Pasadena, and suc- ceeded in tieing the Bengals. El Monte followed and although the Lions had whipped the South Pasadenans earlier in the month, the MK. representatives ran wild and won easily. Defending title holder, Whittier, fell to the Hellmanites and then the local pad- clads slapped down both Long Beach institutions, and edged undefeated Excelsior to win the championship. Then, for good measure, they kicked the mighty Moors' bees all over a rain soaked field to complete the season. ee Cgdootoall CEE FOOTBALL Row l: BQ:-QL Sturn, Iohannsen, Wilson, O'Sullivan, Beauchamp, Beall, Iackson, Kimbro. That was one half of the Cee football squad's combination for the 1946 season. The other half was Coach Strother. Ably assisted by I. W. Thomas, Strother whipped his boys into shape just in time to see these fellows whip Whittier in two games. Continuing to use Strother's newly adopted offense, the double wing, they were overcome by Excelsior in two tilts. The loss of the first game set a record, as it was the first loss suffered by any of Strother's Cee teams since the middle of the 1944 season. The Cees definitely hadn't completed their contests yet, and in their final games they trounced the Alhambra eleven in a pair of thrillers. The second game was played during a cold wet drizzle, and we saw the little Aztecs turn in their finest game of the season as they ran and passed to a decisive victory. Under the excellent coaching of Gil Strother and the very able captainship of Bob Hunt, the team smashed time after time on to victory in the most successful season in our track history. Members of this excellent team are Manuel Acosta, Bob Duckett, Allen Bangs, Paul Winter, Bill Goesch, Larry Mahn, Martin Schir- meister, and Eddy Mclntosh. ln order to reward our team, the school presented each of the boys with bronze emblems. Setting new records at every game, and establishing an admirable reputation in only their third year of running helped the Mark Keppel Cross-Country track team to be recognized as one of the strongest teams in Southern California. Returning Lettermen for next year will be Eddy Mclntosh, Allar Bangs, Larry Mahn, Manuel Acosta, and Martin Schirmeister. 4 We were undefeated in the Pacific League meets and dual meets and the final meet at Long Beach High School. After the Pacific League We played in the California lnterscholastic Federation divisions, and our Cross-country team took second place behind San Diego. See those White clad, deeply tanned young gentlemen wickedly wielding their rackets over on those colorful cement slabs. Those fellas happen to be mem- bers of Coach Reginald Pop Horne's Varsity tennis squad, and say, those fellas are pretty sharp. The Aztecs proceeded to tangle with some of the southland's court greats. Montebello and South Pasadena both handed the locals de- feats. Hellman boys chopped Glendale and then traveled up to Santa Barbara and lost a tight match to the Dons. This tough schedule definitely Was agreeable to the team and they Walked over Wilson in their first league encounter, Were barely edged by a hard driving Whittier nine and in the last match to be covered they trimmed the Moor men 5 to 3. Yes, a fine team, a great coach, and a very good chance to cop the league cup. Keppel U South Pasadena ..... ..... South Pasadena ..... ..... Montebello ............ u .... That's right, the local I.V. outfit really showed a lot of light early this year as they came back from two miserable defeats presented by the South Pasadena Tigers, to triumph over Long Beach Wilson. For the most part it was Del Walcott in first singles and that Ken- Cornell and Gerry Taylor combination in first doubles that brought in the majority of points. These boys along with the rest of the squad looked plenty good enough to give the rest ot the teams on the schedule-Alhambra, Santa Bar- bara and Montebello, a run for their money. Watch these kids next year on that varsity squad. On the side lines energetic yell leaders kept school spirit at a high pitch with their leadership in school yells and cheers. The student body appreciates the many hours of hard Work spent by this group in planning and rehearsing new routines and stunts for school events. Ot course, there Were those traditional assemblies for Armistice Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Everyone enjoyed the exchange assemblies given by South Pasadena High and Whittier High, and We must not forget that unusual and interesting movie and lecture on America's Wild lite. The Ray Trocke Trio started the year oft right with good music. Assemblies like these were made possible by the tund accumulated by the Activity Cards. This year Mark Keppel had something it has never had before-Activity Cards. These cards entitled us to a year's subscription to the Aztec and admission to the football and basketball games-all this for only 52.75. What a Bargain! Since a small deposit was made last Spring, We had them in time for our tirst football game this Fall. The Cabinet members did a lot ot research and planning to get them for us They visited various schools having activity cards, and from these inquiries, they drew up the plans for ours. Of course we sympathized with the poor souls struggling through their carefully prepared speeches, but somehow our hearts were not in it. After the hustle and bustle of campaigns and election day were over, the newly elected officers fairly itched for their first Cabinet meeting and to put into effect some of the brilliant new ideas that had crowded homework out of their minds for days. They planned dances and assemblies, and attended inter-school conferences for the build- ing of student government. This past year was a most successful one, the Cabinet carried out the use of our activity cards, assisted the legis- lative council in acquiring a juke-box to sweeten your lunch and threw some wonderful dances. These are only a few of the many events worked out with the time and energies of that swell group of volunteers-your student body cabinet. 2ND SEMESTER CABINET: Row l: Eleanor Williams, Ass't Secretary of Finance, Mavis Acuna, Secretary of Girls, Frances Warchot, Secreiary of Finance, Margaret Gillcinson, Secretary of Literature, Kathy Kidd, Secretary of Assemblies. This constitutes the lawmaking body of our school and with such a well balanced system of representation it is easy to see why every one seems to be happy with our present constitution. The council meets every Monday, alternating as to the period they meet. Last semester it was led by a very able Speaker, leannette Byrd, who did an excellent job and this semester the Speaker was Morrie Ramirez, who also did a fine piece of work. Mr, Kruger is the adviser and is always on hand to help straighten out any difficulties that may arise. lst Semester Legislative Council 2nd Semestei Legislative Council lally Committee Girls' League I Again the Girls' League has had an active year, sponsoring such things as luggage day, which the girls dread and the boys Welcome and a thrift drive with a grand play in reward. ln addition to these activities they were responsible tor the dec- oration ot many of our banquets. The officers and a representative also attended a convention in Alhambra Where they discussed problems con- cerning the girls. Paralleling the activities of the League have been those of the Rally Committee. The first semester our editor-in-chief was Ioe Erwin, and the second semester the position was filled by Deon Parsons, both of them doing a splendid piece of Work. This is the first year we haven't had to bother With Aztec subscriptions to get the paper, as they were taken care of by our Activity Cards. lt is the job of the Aztec staff to report to the students through the paper, all the interesting news items that have risen during the Week.
