This unusual play Was snappily presented by the Senior Class and had an able cast to portray its colorful characters. lt was named Dark Eyes for the Russian girls who were featured in this fast-moving comedy. The story took place in a Well-to-do New York socialite's home, Where Nikolai Toradje, her fiance, was visiting. To start the series of hilarious incidents which popped continually through the play, three lively Russian actresses arrived. These three, Natasha Rapakovich, Tonia Kapova, and Shmilevskaya Olga, thought they were being chased for money they had over- drawn from the bank. Natasha Was in love with Nikolai Without admitting it to any- one until nearing the end ot the play. The plot became quite involved, as usual tor love affairs which concern several parties, but all turned out with everyone happy. :fm 55 S355 . sz Q Q ,K 1 Af. The talented cast of Three-Cornered Moon had an appreciative audience for their brilliant senior play. A madcap family, the Rimplegars, were characterized by a carefree, happy attitude toward life. The father, long since dead, had entrusted the family fortune to the mother who, ill-advised, had lost everything in the crash of the stock market. This unexpected turn of events left the spoiled family in a state of turmoil, upset- ting the luxurious and somewhat bored life led by four grown children and scatter- brained Mrs. Rimplegar. Being in dire need of money, Kenneth, Elizabeth, Ed and Hildegard went in search of employment. For further support they boarded mild, sensible Dr. Stevens, an old family friend. To thicken the plot, Elizabeth's fiance, Donald, roomed with them, but depended upon the family means for financial support. He was a temper- amental novelist with a strange idea that he could not work because of his highly artistic personality. He was a constant cause of argument, with headstrong Elizabeth defending him. Later, Donald left for good after having disappointed everyone by turning down a good job. This action left Elizabeth free to marry Dr. Stevens, and with the combined income from the Rimplegars' jobs, their careless and happy feel- ing returned to them. The characters were cleverly portrayed by a well-chosen cast, the play itself was' brightly flecked with gaiety, drama, and emotion. Yes, another football season has passed through the Keppel sports newsreelg and though not as spectacular as its predecessor, the Aztec's 1945 pigskin efforts can be written into that big maroon and white record book as one of the most exciting grid years at Hell- man Avenue's football-minded institution. Opening their bag of tricks on South Pasadena turf, the Wagermen were surprised by the power-laden tiger but succeeded in knotting the count 7-7. The lack Rabbits of Long Beach were next to feel Maroon strength and they fell, 10-U. ln the next game against Beverly Hills, the Keppelites blew an 18-6 lead in the last five minutes to give the Normans a 19-18 victory. This score was reversed the following week when the locals met and defeated Glendale Broadway, 19-18. ln their first league tilt the Montezumamen and the Whittier Cards played to a breath- taking scoreless tie with the Aztec's only tally being called back. The unbeaten Excelsior Pilots suffered their first defeat when they met the Keppelites and lost, 12-0. The red-hot E1 Monte eleven was th next squad to come to grips with the locals and after a see-saw battle they edged out the home towners, 13-8. Then the final-Aztecs vs. Moors in the league final! In a game with all the customary excitement, thrills, and color, the Alhambrans cashed in on a Keppel fumble for a safety which changed a Keppel win to an 8-7 loss. And so it ended, 3 wins, 2 ties, 3 losses-not bad Keppel! 1 Row 2: Berry, Bordier, Howard, Coit, Cypher, Bailey, Richardson, Reid, Young, Scott-Mgr. Although outweighed in nearly all their games, the Aztec middleweights were never outclassed and were able to place another colorful season alongside the many other Bee seasons already past, copping a second place in the league play. With Coach Blynn Wilson at the reins, the local chargers tangled with South Pasa- dena and came through with a 13-7 win. The Keppelites then hit a four-game losing streak. After taking a 33-18 stropping from the Long Beach Poly team, the locals returned home for their next three games. The first contest with Glendale Broadway found the Montezuma gridders strong, but not strong enough to top the exploding Dynamiters. Aztecs lost 12-7, Glendale scoring the winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The Middies then dropped two more tilts to Beverly Hills 13-7, and to Whittier 20-O in a league battle. The Aztecs finally returned to the win column the next week, however, and edged pow- erful Excelsior 7-6. The boys from Hellman Avenue showed what they could do when they got started. The El Monte eleven was next on the list of league opponents and the Maroons again won in a wide open battle, 20-12. The Bee gridders followed this with their most thrilling performance of the year in the traditional clash with the Alhambra Moors. Trailing 12-6 with four minutes to play the Kep- pelites drove 77 yards, scoring in the last three seconds of the game. The all important conversion was made and the Wilsonmen won, 13-12. Throughout the season it was the Keppel running attack mixed with deception which gave the maroon squad the majority of its wins, also it was the first Keppel middleweight squad in the history of the school to place second in league play. Little pile-driving Ernie Hernandez, the team's key man in the backfield, was chosen captain of the squad. , Row l: Moren, Pix, Stewart, Longo, Farley, Butters, Cirone, Overholser, Brown. Breaking record after record as they advanced through their undefeated season, the mighty small-fry, the Keppel Cees became the first unbeaten midget squad to pass through the Keppel sports spotlight. With many inexperienced but eager freshmen and group of sophomores and returning let- termen on the starting eleven, the little Aztecs played their first contest on the local grid. Their opponents, the Chino lightweights, were taken to the cleaners, 14-O. Hitting the road for their first game away, the Montezuma gridders traveled to the home of the green and white clad men of Excelsior. Aztecs again scored twice for a 13-0 win. This win placed the team well up in the San Gabriel Valley Limelight. lt was a determined group of footballers who dropped- over to Whittier and passed, as well as ran, their way to a 39-7 victory. The first clash with the Moors from Main Street proved to be the local's first strong opposi- tion, and in the hotly contested tift, the Alhambra passing attack was very strong. The Maroons, however, were still able to salvage a 13-6 win. Beginning the second round, the Aztecs again dumped the Excelsior gang 32-12 and followed up with another one-sided 20-U crushing of the Whittier Cardinals. Then came the last scheduled battle when the mites journeyed to the Moor Stadium and systematically disintegrated the Arabs, 20-O. Seven victories-that's all-that's enough. In the backfield Paul McClain, fast and hard-driving fullback, headed the ground-gaining department, while Gene McEver, Bob Bernasconi, Don Ienkins, and Neil Cloud carried the ball for many other valuable yards. On the line Bob Lammers, Iim Keith, Gerald Hazzard, Captain Ed Holtzclaw, lim Dye, Tod Tennyson and Gene Weal proved to be reliable hole-openers. Finally, Coach Blynn Wilson, the newly- arrived sports tutor, was selected. Enough Varsity lettermen returned to make two complete strings, not counting Morrie Ramirez and Iohnny Dominguez up from Bees. At the forward spots were the able hoopsters Bradshaw and Schultz, at guards Olson and Bailey, and to complete this scoring armada was ace center, Ramirez. With graduation catching up with them, two veteran scorchers, Willson and Newhouse, were not able to complete the season. In the first league test against El Monte, the Varsity got off on the wrong foot to come out of the bout 6 digits less than the Lions' 33. The Maroon and White in the second contest, broke into the win column to upset the Cards of Whittier, 32-2, only to be knocked off their feet by Monrovia in the third, 24-23. In the next games against Montebello, Covina, Excel- sior, and Alhambra, the local lads hit pay dirt by winning all four matches. This good luck placed them at mid-season time with five wins and two losses. Beginning the second half, the Cagers lost again to El Monte, and to the Cardinals as well. To remove the taste of defeat from their mouths, the Wilsonmen turned the tables to wallop the four remaining teams, Monrovia, Montebello, Covina, and Alhambra. These victories placed them second to best on the league ladder. Coach Wilson Bradshaw, R. Sparked by Capt. Goodman and coached by Gil Strother, the Middies started oft the League games by downing the Lions from E1 Monte 28-21. ln the second bout they lost to Whittier, 25-31. The Strothermen, still with the sweat of the last defeat in their eyes, Were shellacked by the armada from Monrovia, 44-24. They came back to pound Montebello, 29-21, and came up victor over Covina by a margin of 8 points. In the next six contests the Maroon and Vifhite were in tor a long stretch of overpoweringsg the first ot the sextet went to Excelsior Pilots, 28-21. The second tilt was lost to the Moors, 13-15, in a hard-fought game. Beginning the second halt the Aztec casabamen Were hammered by Blue and White to the tune of 25-33. Again in the next battle they were slaughtered by the Whittier Cards, 14-37. To complete the six consecutive downs the locals lost to Monrovia, 43-12, and Montebello, 35-21. Finally, after the bitter defeats, the hoopsters broke into the Win column by upsetting the Covina applecart, 35-16. In the next to the last game of the season, the Middies traveled to the Excelsior floor and were swamped, 33-40. ln the last bout of the season the unpredictable Bee's crossed the tracks to down their rivals, 30-21. Because of a mid season coaching change and a definite lack of height, the Mark Keppel Cee cake squad was the first Aztec midget team to wind up their season in the depths of the cellar. The team coached earlier in the year by Ed Wagner gave all the indication of a potentially powerful force as 78 midgets turned out for the opening practice sessions. The team, however, was unable to play together consistently, due to lack of exper- ience and height handicap. In the majority of the games during the first round the little Aztecs gave stellar performance rarely. With the resignation of Wagner, Coach Walt Dean took over the cage reins. The Deanmen were unable to do much better in the second round of league play, but did show much improvement in two of their closing games against Montebello and Covina. The team was captained by center Harold Weber and was consistently aided throughout the season by the point-getting of lack Gerwick and Bob Bernasconi, for- wards, Stan Clark, forwardg Ed Holtsclaw and Brubaker, guards. The locals finished the first round with three wins and four losses while the second round gave the Maroons only two wins to five defeats, for a sum total of five victories and nine setbacks. The deadeye marksmanship of forwards Tullgren and McGlothin, plus the de- fensive work of guards Arambel and Capt. Stillwagon, make the elements of a very successful 1946 Dee squad. The team played a consistent and a hard-fought brand of ball during their bouts and finished second in the league with 9 wins and 5 losses. Coached by instructors Wagner and Dean, the Keppel Mites became accom- plished masters of the fast break and the zone defense. The team on the whole looked very weak in the opening games but improved rapidly as the season pro- gressed and ended the first half with a victory over the Alhambra Moors. With the advantage of their floor speed and accurate passing, the Dees began to edge away from the opposing team in the third and fourth quarters of the tests. The small fry finished their season with a three-game winning streak, erminat- ing with their second topping of the Blue and Gold of the rival Arabs. The Aztecs' most exciting contest was played during the second round on the Monrovia hardwood when the locals edged the heavily favored Cats in a breath- taking battle. The Varsity Hardball Knockers, under the tutorship of Coach Pursell, are bursting with baseball know-how and the traditional Keppel spirit. There is a lot of talent out on the old diamond this season for there are ten return- ing lettermen. Although the hardballers have lost their first two games they are picking up like wolves on Vine Street. The hickorymen came around with their first win in true Aztec style by defeating the Monrovians 4-l in the third league game of the season. Guarding the home plate and throwing the sizzling pegs down to second-baseman Benny Claridge is ace catcher Bob lenkins. Out on the mound is the madcap marvel, Morris Moberly, with his eye-defying fast ball. Fast on his heels i aul En ho has the full time job of snatching high flies out of the right fie s yg also e gives relief to Mobes' arm by taking over on the mound. On first base you will find the loose-jointed Bob Schultz whipping a left-handed glove up in the air just in time to snag the howling toss to make another throwout. Perhaps the screaming ball to Schultz was thrown by Stan Iones after an expert stop on the third base lineg or maybe from short stop Al Karan, playing the role of an impenetrable barrier against the opposing team. ln the outfield holding down the No. 7 spot is George Bailey, the able veteran who pulls the horsehide in on the run. A The top sluggers this season are led by the two colorful contestants, Arms End and Horizontal Schultz, plus Woolverton and Claridge. It looks to one and all that the array of talent that the squad possesses is enough to set them high on the league ladder of fame. Coach Pursell and the student body hope they will reach the top bracket. - f. 1 x- W 9 1 c f 1 ' ,fiflabf R -ffkgf ' ' ffl JAC fC12'.2.Z,.,f' A u fun 0' J auwfz, ., K -2 . N . Opening the l946 season with ten returning lettermen and a host of last year's squad members, plus many Bees from the league championship team of '45, the Mark Keppel Varsity cinder team look like one of the most powerful in the valley. The locals during their earlier meets were hampered by team injuries, plus ineligible men and so in their first meet were decisively whipped by the Bengals of South Pasadena, 67lf2-36lf2. The El Monte Lions were the next foes, and they topped the Montezumans 63-4l in Keppel's first league tilt. After these two opening losses the Hellmanites finally hit their stride and posted their first group win by crushing the Whittier thin clads, 83-19. Due to dead line, we are unable to cover any more cinder tilts but the way the Keppelites were picking up with every meet the team seemed bound for an upper division spot in the league standings Leading the Aztec Varsity through their season were: milers, Paul Winter and Bob Hunt who both broke 5 minutes consistantlyg Bob Mileham and lim Buress, high soaring pole vaulters who kept up near the l2 foot mark most of the year, Bud Bordier, Dave Bewley and Don Bradshaw in the hurdles and Morrie Ramirez in the high jump, The Bee squad sorely under rated at the opening of the year surprised the league by copping their first two battles from South Pasadena, 63-3l, and El Monte, 52-42. They suffered their first defeat to the Cardinals, Bl-34. The Aztec Midgets, the Cee team, gave all the indications of repeating their championship form of two years before, as they were undefeated in all meets covered. Varsity men who turned in good performances were Rudy Maclntosh, lohn Dominguez, Salty Acosta, Earl Cockrell, Bruce Anderson, Fred Aguirre and Bob Harrison. Bee Squad men were Don Williams, Bob Dukett, George Moore, Bob Allen, Dick Trueman, Ray Alvarez, Bob ludd and lsh Poblano. Hard workers on the Midgets were Bob Bernasconi, Paul McClain, Tex Crowson, Bob Richards, Allan Bangs, and Gene McEver. The Cee team in their three meets were undefeated having topped South Pasadena, BO-13, El Monte, 42-34, Whittier, 58-l8, The Mites 4-man relay team stands a good chance of breakin the Keppel school record. Well, direct your praises to the hardest Working student organization at Mark Keppel, your Cabinet. Ct course, at times one wondered how the Cabinet produced such clever ideas. You have probably passed room lU5 one time and seen its session in high gear. At times like that ideas are popping thick and last While the poor secretary tries to keep up, and Mr. Peel Bill Fitchie, Secretary of Boys, lst Semester, Bonnie Glover, Secretary of Literature, Cleo Merrill, Editor of the Aztec, lst Semes- ter, and Beverly Edwards, Secretary of Activities lst Semester. TEHS. .. desperately pleads for order. But the students get the job done. This body has a great deal of gov- erning power, but has several checks: Faculty Committee, Legislative Coun- cil, and the ludicial Board. The Cabinet operates under routine discipline, al- though it gets rather off the subject sometimes. The student body appreciates the time and effort the Cabinet has spent in helping to achieve a successful year. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL The Legislative Council was organized in the fall of 1945 to make the student body government more democratic in organization and in purpose. Each semester a pupil is elected to the Council from the following classes: B9 orientation, A9 fundamental speech, B10 and AIU English, B11 and All history, B12 civ-ics, and A12 senior problems. This method provides opportunity for each classroom to express its opinion on legislative problems initiated by the Council. LEGISL1'.TI7.'E COUNCIL. Accompanied by her attendants, Pat O'Connell and Ieannette Byrd, the queen was conducted to the center of the field to attend the ceremony that marked the opening of a colorful day. Mr. Lawson presented Beverly with a large bouquet of lovely chrysanthernums, the gift of her loyal followers. After accepting the gift and the plaudits of the crowd, the queen retired to her seat to preside over the game. The queen was selected through the offices of the Legislative Council and the Cabinet. Ten candidates were nominated to be voted on by the student body. Beverly received the largest num- ber of votesg second and third place honors went to Pat and leannette who were selected as the queen's royal attendants. ' All hoped that this ceremony would become a Mark Keppel tradition to be repeated at every home game with Alhambra. We were all proud of our leading ladies on that unforgettable Thanksgiving Day in l945. ll 27 :l , , Q fr , ,J 1' E 5 A My gf: 1,14 Qffw V N iii. SS? is A N A V ,.
