Oh no Nell Nusbaum the second L1berace was completlng a difflcult plece of mus1c My dlsappomtment was acute I had supposed he would be a farmer rals mg melons I now seemed to enter a rowded court room an Deflance Ohzo now the capltol of the Un1ted States I stopped to llsten to the clear rmgmg tones of a senator who was maklng a forcxble and convzncmg appeal The tones Were clear and I percewed that It was not the usual manner of address Pressmg forward I got a v1ew of the speaker and could readlly understand the crowd s adm1rat1on for the speaker was a woman and that woman was Dorothy Luderman The next scene was mdeed a surprlse I entered the largest classroom and Prof Robert Slattery was addressmg a class of young women on the subject 'Why Women Are Inferlor to Men? Instead of lxstenmg to what he was saymg some of the glrls were saymg Isn't he good look1ng'? Gee I wonder rf he would take me to the dance 7 Who was th1s'7 After lookmg closer I recogn1zed the actress Mary Helen Herzer She stopped to admlre some models U1 the store wmdow Bemg mterested she opened her purse and then closed tt agam She entered the bulldmg whlch was not large It was dlvxded mto two rooms The one that um terested her more was the man1cur1ng department and there domg her best to glve sattsfactxon to the old and young men allke was B1ll1e Va1l I learned she had a large patronage and the men were as fond of her as ever I was now transported to the beauttful clty of Austm There the c1ty was rmgmg w1th the pralses for Lauren Mast the wealthy o1l man and youth ful governor of Texas Ah fame How unequal are thy favors At thls moment the stnkmg of the half hour warned me that the tlme was passmg and I must hurry over the vzews The place of my next v1s1t was the c1ty of Brooklyn In passmg along the street I notlced the glarmg headlines of the newspaper Dav1d Culler famous Brooklyn Dodger pitcher reszgns from the club Accepts posxtxon w1th General Mtlls to demonstrate Angel Food Ca e Makmg Y - - . I - I - . . . 5 I r . k ' Il n Class Prophecy lcontl Next I found myself at P1ke's Peak Out of the weather statlon came Le Roy Reams Twas long ago predxcated he would use above hms fellowmen and hzs frxends fond hopes have not been dlsappomted as at least he has reached the top where all men look up to h1m bemg weather reporter on the top of P1ke's Peak Now I must tell you what I saw next In one of the large churches on Broad way the Rev Henry Bremmger was addressmg h1s large congregatlon whlle waves of soft rnuslc fllled the azr H15 congregatwn was spellbound My attent1on was then drawn to a f1gure bent and dusty who appeared to be dxggmg among rocks and stone Drawmg nearer I recogn1zed though wzth d1ff1cu1 ty one of our classmates Paul W-alters Although the sun was pourmg down kept on dlggmg the plck keepmg tlme wlth the gelger counter Nearby was a sign 'Uranxum or Bus I was now eager to know the fate of our two most brllllant students Marvm Boehm and Roa Rohn There seemed to be qu1te a contrast between the two scenes Ah' Glamorous New York Commg out of the Stock Exchange was Roa Rohn She recognlzed me and asked me to have tea wlth her 1n her room at the Waldorf She was the master mmd of the huge enterprlse the New York Stock Exchange man commg toward me whose long strlde seemed famllrar When he approached he sald Mr I m sellmg a new patented clothes pln just what you need ver c eap and convenlent I not1ced he looked at me very queer and soor sald beg your pardon s1r but your face seems farnrlxar 'Of course sald I You remember me and I certamly have not forgot en you Marvm In school he was always mterested U1 eIectron1cs but th1s electronlc clothes pm Havmg seen the whole class pass before me Iwas eager to know my own fate but tlme was agamst me The p1cture vanished from the ball Now dear classmates If the future as pxctured seems mean Blame not me for the crystal was not keen Bear 1n mmd wherever your future may turn That we are Amerzcans and fall not to learn Not on Words of prophet or wlshes of frlends But on your own efforts your future depends I may guess and guess wrong as I probably had done You can work and work rxght and the prize w1ll be won James B Arend ll . . . . .
