English The English Department can be described by many words, but the one word which best described its action this year was change . Many changes to the department were made possible by a five-thousand dollar donation from a private foundation. A portion of the donation was allocated to buy books and pamplets, available and prof- itable, to both students and faculty members. Room 212 was then converted into an English office supplied with typewriters, desks, and all other needed facilities. In order to keep pace with new teaching methods, the department purchased new Audio-Visual equipment and additional phonographs. Assisted by Dr. Charles Billiard of Georgia State Uni- versity, the department adopted a new course of studies. Father Hughes, head of the English Department, described the new teaching method in two words, sequential progression . This is simply a three-phase program with each phase lasting two years, in which a student is introduced to grammar, literature, and writ- ing skills. i clockwise) Col Van Houlen. English 9. Math An understanding ot Math is essential in any vocation or field of study a student wishes to enter. Under study this year in the Math Department are innovative projects designed to give Marist students that needed understanding. Acquiring a computer terminal this year, the department offered an extracurricular course in programming during the second semester. Their hopes are that the course will be included in the curriculum next year and eventually the computer can be used as a teaching aid in other math courses. Also tried this year were new approaches to conventional material such as programed courses designed to give students more individual instruction and attention. Language The Language Department at Marist is constantly expanding to meet the needs of its college bound students. The Department, headed by Prof. Juan Benedit, announced plans this year to expand the coming year ' s cur- riculum. The expansion will allow any cadet the opportu- nity to take two years of Latin, four years of French, four years of Spanish and or one year of German. The new German course, incidentally will be taught by Mr. Griffin, the latest addition to the Lan- guage Department, whose major in college was in German. {lelt to right) Mr. Lowrey.
