Varsity Baseball Battles Way To 19-3 Season The Varsity Baseball team finished the season with a 19-3 record,'only to miss going to state by two gamesg. They were led by Dean Hummel who was elec- ted to the Sky-Em first league team and was also chosen to pitch on the State Team in the Dalles. Chris Holvey and Rich lVlilroy were also for first team honors. John Stacy was voted to the second team while Jason Bolkan and Chris Luby were given honorable mention. Special awards were given to five players and were chosen by their teammates for recogni- tion. Tony Barbisan was voted as IVlost lm- proved Player, Rich lVlilroy was lVlost Inspira- tional. John Stacy was given the Whittet Award given to the outstanding junior player. The Golden Glove Award was given to Chris Holvey and Dean Hummel was voted lVlost Valuable. Faced with adversities of heavy rains, field availabilities and playing primarily against upperclassmen, the members of the team kept a positive, competitive spirit. To go along with their strong character, this group possessed a unique feeling of oneness to build a strong foundation for the future of the Marist Baseball Program. Individual leaders were Dan Proulx, Cather, Shortstop Darren Hotman, Third BasemanXSteve Splonskciwski, Left FielderJim Stacy, and Greg Powell at Center Field. Scott Halbrook, with a pitching record of 5-1, was voted by his teammates as this season's lVlost Inspira- tional player. The team was coached by lVlr. Phil Brus and Joe Schnabel. Baseball 65
