Nlurphy Leads Spartans To League And State Titles Lead by Senior Mike Murphy the Spartans raced through the 1977-78 roundball season to capture the Sky-Em League Championship and the State crown at Mac Court. Voted the Ieague's most valuable player despite the fact he scored only 9.2 points a game, Murphy led the team to impressive victories over Sky-Em Opponents. A season record of 22-3 earned them the No. 3 ranking in the state prior to the State Tourney, March 13-16 in Eugene. Using a slow, controlled of defense coupled with an aggressive physlcal defense, the Spartans, coached by Kim Swaim, were able to control the tempo of their games. Leading scorers were sophomores Steve Eggink f12.9l and Joe Willis t11.2l. Starters were Dean Hummel, Jason Bolkan, Jim Mennis, while Chrls Holvey and Shawn Waters were often used subs. The story of the successful season was one that showed that Spartan opponents couIdn't play their game as well as the Spartans played the controlled Marist game. Coach Swaim, assisted by Coaches Greg Graham and Rogers Schenk, Ben Salm and Jim Keegan, was named league Coach of the Year. Eggink and Murphy were first team all-league. Joe Willie was all second team, and Jason Bolkan was named Honorable Mention.
