Girls Take Trip To Stateg Place Second By beating Sutherlin in a league playoff game, the Marist Spartans gained a berth in the state tournament. Once in the Coos Bay classic, the Spartans displayed the ability that carried them to a 12-2 regular league record and fought Newport for the state crown. Trailing Sutherlin with only one game left in the regular season the Spartans were given an opening when they beat So. Umpqua while Sutherlin was upset by Douglas. ln a play-off game to determine the league's state representative, the Spartans handed the southern gals their third defeat and entered the state tourna- ment. In first round action the Spartans led by Margaret Sullivan with 16 points put away the Seaside Seagulls, 41-34. Theresa Wollaston added 10 points to the effort. ln quarterfinal action, Laura Jones hit 11 points and Pam Gent and Wolloston added 10 apiece to lead the Spartans over Hidden Valley 42-28. The Saturday night final saw the Spartans against Newport and after being tied 34-34 with only 4:01 to go, the Spar- tans were unable to keep up the pace and fell 43-36.
