Patience And Discipline Bring Crown To Spartans A tough, physical man-to-man defense and patient, time- consuming patterned offense were key ingredients in the Spartan assault on the best in the state AA ranks. Coming into the State Tourney as the number one representative from the Sky- Em League, the Spartans marched through four opponents to the first state title in Marist basket- ball history. With Sky-Em Coach of the Year Kim Swaim at the helm and All- League selections Mike Murphy, Steve Eggink, and Second Time selection Joe Willis leading the way Marist went out the second night of the tourney to take on a lightly regarded Ranier team. Doing enough things well enough to win, the Spartans tagged a 54-45 loss on the Columbians. Murphy led all scores with 16 while Willis and Eggink added 14 each to pace the Spartans. Next night out North Valley brought a 20-3 regular season record and an opening game victory over Vale into the Pit against the Spartans. Quickly knocking the Knights out of their zone defense the Spartans took a f 48-39'victory, Murphy threw in 12 and Eggink led the way with 20 points as the team from Troy broke open a close game. As tourney favorite LaSalle moved dangerously through the opposite bracket, Marist met Sherwood in the semifinals on Friday night. The first half saw a near perfect performance by the blue and gold as they raced to a 34-6 lead. The defense held the Bowmen to only two of 25 field goal attempts while the Spartans hit 14 of 18 in the first half of their way to a record 65.71.
