IQ 1 J, TUDENT LIFE The year 1978 at Marist High School. lt was a year of things as widely diverse as a championship in basketball and a championship in Hi-Q. 1978 will live on in the memories of students as the year the juniors won Spirit Week, the year of the first lVlarist Gong Show, the year of more people being involved in a wider variety of things than ever before in the history of the school. lt was a good year for athletics, all the teams did well however, the emphasis is not as much on physical developmentas on the spiritual. Marist of- fers the best in a Christian education anywhere in the area. The year 1978 was indeed an excellent year in this aspect. ln April we hosted a Youth Rally for over 300 people from every walk of life. There were dances, pep assem- blies, and the turnout was enormous for all of these. lt was a good year. we E C get i 2 Opposite, Sherryl McGuigan and Bruce Wilkens perform at the Spring Concert. Coming into the State Tourney as the number one representative from the Sky- Em League, the Spartans marched through four opponents to the first state title in Marist basket- ball history. With Sky-Em Coach of the Year Kim Swaim at the helm and All- League selections Mike Murphy, Steve Eggink, and Second Time selection Joe Willis leading the way Marist went out the second night of the tourney to take on a lightly regarded Ranier team. Doing enough things well enough to win, the Spartans tagged a 54-45 loss on the Columbians. Murphy led all scores with 16 while Willis and Eggink added 14 each to pace the Spartans. Next night out North Valley brought a 20-3 regular season record and an opening game victory over Vale into the Pit against the Spartans. Quickly knocking the Knights out of their zone defense the Spartans took a f 48-39'victory, Murphy threw in 12 and Eggink led the way with 20 points as the team from Troy broke open a close game. As tourney favorite LaSalle moved dangerously through the opposite bracket, Marist met Sherwood in the semifinals on Friday night. The first half saw a near perfect performance by the blue and gold as they raced to a 34-6 lead. The defense held the Bowmen to only two of 25 field goal attempts while the Spartans hit 14 of 18 in the first half of their way to a record 65.71. The ball club was typically Marist, very aggressive defensively and very productive offensively. Several offensive and defen- sive personal records were established, Pat Brennan threw for over 1400 yards, Dean Hummel caught 30 passes for 5 TD's and Dan Weber was in on 151 tackles. Daryl Moser had six interceptions for the year. Team Captain for the Spart- ans were Daryl lVloser, lVlel Damewood and Lynn Thom- as. The outstanding de- fensive player award went to Dan Weber. John finished in 32nd place with a time of 17:26 for the 5000 meter course for a new school record. John also finished in sixth place at the Sky-Em District meet. For his accomplishments John made the Sky-Em All Star Cross Country Team. Br. Ron said: With just a few more runners next year, we can do some big things-we will be able to surprise some teams in the Sky-Em. We will have a strong team showing in the District meet and we will be able to have more Spartan Harriers in the State Finals . . . Big things are in the Making, for those who want it . . . Trailing Sutherlin with only one game left in the regular season the Spartans were given an opening when they beat So. Umpqua while Sutherlin was upset by Douglas. ln a play-off game to determine the league's state representative, the Spartans handed the southern gals their third defeat and entered the state tourna- ment. In first round action the Spartans led by Margaret Sullivan with 16 points put away the Seaside Seagulls, 41-34. Theresa Wollaston added 10 points to the effort. ln quarterfinal action, Laura Jones hit 11 points and Pam Gent and Wolloston added 10 apiece to lead the Spartans over Hidden Valley 42-28. Voted the Ieague's most valuable player despite the fact he scored only 9.2 points a game, Murphy led the team to impressive victories over Sky-Em Opponents. A season record of 22-3 earned them the No. 3 ranking in the state prior to the State Tourney, March 13-16 in Eugene. Using a slow, controlled of defense coupled with an aggressive physlcal defense, the Spartans, coached by Kim Swaim, were able to control the tempo of their games. Leading scorers were sophomores Steve Eggink f12.9l and Joe Willis t11.2l. Starters were Dean Hummel, Jason Bolkan, Jim Mennis, while Chrls Holvey and Shawn Waters were often used subs. The story of the successful season was one that showed that Spartan opponents couIdn't play their game as well as the Spartans played the controlled Marist game. The Boys team placed third in the district while the girls tied for second. Altogether both teams sent eleven people to the State Meet at Mount Hood Community College. The boy's 400 meter relay team of Daryl Moser, Randy Harrison, Shawn Waters and Jerry Barbisan set a league record of 44.6 to earn a chance to compete in the State finals. John Nagel went to State in the 1500 and 3000 meter runs with times of 4:14 and 9:21. Jerry Barbisan also competed in the longjump and the 200 at Mt. Hood. The girl's 400 and 1600 meter relay teams placed first at the district meet entitling them to a trip to State. Dolores May competed in four events at Mt. Hood: the last leg of the 400 meter relay, the 100 and 200 meter sprints and the longjump. Kelley Olsen placed in three events: the 400 and 1600 meter relay, and the 400 meter run. Laura Jones placed in the 400 and 1600 meter relays. Others that went to State on relay teams were Mari Oien, Mary Ficker, and Laurie Moran. Mike Holmes and Dolores May took high point honors. As can be seen by the new record chart in Junior hall, the '78 track season was very successful. From 81 Pep Band Helps Spark Enthusiasm At Games The lVlarist Pep Band showed up in force once more at the football and basketball games this year. This dedicated group of musicians, comprised of members from the symphonic band and the jazz ensemble, showed up at the games to provide a rallying force for the students in the Marist section and for the teams. Sacrificing many hours of homelife the band members are ready for all the games while under the expert leadership of lVlr. Andy Gilbert. Top, Nlatt Whelen applauds the pep band after a particularly fine set: bottom, three Marist musicians show their stuff, Nlarty Gay on trumpet, Kim Banton on clarinet, and Sarah Peniston on soprano sax. 82 Pep Band Jazz Ensemble The Jazz Ensemble once more had a good year under the able leadership of Andy Gilbert. They visited several schools, played at the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival, and met with wide approval at a Spring Concert at which they performed jointly with the Wind Ensemble, While not doing as well as they had hoped at the Jazz Festival, they made a respectable showing, and proved that they are truly the cream of the young jazz musicians of the state of Oregon. The Diary of Anne Frank, while it has its moments of gaiety is more of a study of the human organisms emotions than anything else. The story of a young girl's life as it is affected by the Second World War is a touching yet chilling tale. Confined for most of the duration in a small attic, the two families and IVlr. Dussel, played by Chris Beveridge, are constantly trying to bring a little peace into their portion of the world which knows no peace. This year the rain had fallen for two days prior to the scheduled affair and had forced a change in plans to have the service in the courtyard. So the service was held in the gymnasium scene of Successes which has highlighted the years of the Class of 78 . Approximately 500 people attended the 10:00 a.m. service and saw the class present to lVlarist a poster containing messages from the graduates. ln addition to the poster the class of 78 presented a candle to the school which will be kept in the school chapel. Chris Lyford presented the memorabilia to the school. And Sue Swaggerty sang a song written by her and dedicated to the Class of 78. lVlost Rev.
