David and Goliath 1977-1978 was an extremely unusual season and a difficult one for the players and the coaches. However, it was a very positive learning expe- rience for everyone involved. After a great summer of basketball, the Fledskin Varsity team got off to a good start, and despite some early injuries, they managed to capture the consolation championship in the Turkey Classic. The season was turned around suddenly, however, when 10 of the 12 Varsity players were suspended for the remainder of the season for violating a team policy at the Christmas Holiday Tournament. Sophomores were moved up to fill the vacant Varsity slots and many of the Freshmen were thrust into Sophomore roles. Our younger players did a tremendous iob against insurmountable odds. Their hustle and determination kept the Redskins competitive on a schedule that was the toughest in the School's history, and gave our fans not only exciting brand of basket- ball, but a taste of what we can expect in the future. The tremendous support and cooperation shown by the student body, the fans, and the parents was an inspiration to the players, coaches, and administration. The true character of all who make up the Marist family was exempli- fied by the spirit and courage shown this season. With experience and excellent talent, the returning players will be major contenders in their League next year. . .. . 5 QM-t

Time of Promise The Freshman and Sophomore basketball teams provided great promise for the future by responding to the many chal- lenges which they faced this year. The season provided an opportunity for all players to gain valuable experience against tough opposition while preparing for Varsity compe- tition. Twelve different Freshmen played on the Sophomore team throughout the season, which is a good indication of the tre- mendous talent in the Class of 1981. The Sophomore team, coached by Nlr. Jim Olson, highlighted its season with a secs ond place finish in the Andrew High School Tournament. The Freshman team, coached by Mr. Rich Danek and Nlr. Tom Richardson, won a second place trophy in the Chicago Christian Tournament and finished with a combined A and B team record of 22-17. 1:45 5 if! 'll Q . l..sf g X 'T sf' W. rm
