PEGPLE HELPING PEGPLE A natural outflow of a truly Christian community is the concept of service. Marist's Senior Service program, an elective of the Religion Department, allows seniors the opportunity to get involved with people outside their normal sphere of influence. Participants of the program get the chance to serve as teachers in elementary edu cation at St. Linus and McCauley Little School, as teacher aids in special education at the Park Lawn School and as physical rehabilitation aids at the Americana Reha- bilitation Center. As a member ofthe Senior Service Program, lVlarist's seniors are participants, not observers. These various areas of service aid the student to widen his perspective on humanity and allows him to test his own potential as a true minister to others - the aspect of our call as Christians that is so much a part ofthe Gospel message. :. if-ia.: -ls. Retreat: to withdraw - a place of seclusion Encounter: to meetg to come face to face with Although these are definitions of what the Retreat! Encounter Program is all about, they are so cold and simple compared with the warmth and complexity involved. The time and effort put into them is only equaled by the experiences and friendships that are formed. The retreat is a two-year Frosh-Soph program where for one weekend a Freshman or Sophomore takes time out of his regular world for new things to happen in his life. The Encounter Program for Juniors and Seniors is the same. For those who have made a Retreat or an Encounter this year, no explanation is neccessaryg but for those who haven't, no explanation can do what an actual Retreat or Encounter could. 45,2 4, 1.
