The 1977 Baseball season should have been a season of growth because a majority of the squad was composed of un- derclassmen. Two starters returned, Mike Hall at 3rd base and Don Pirkle an outfielder. The season started March 24 with a demanding 40 game schedule. Coach Hackett, with patience and psychology, molded the pitching staff of Mike Wisniewski, Don Pirkle, Bob Hallas, Randy Conti, Mike Pilarczyk into a consistent machine. ln the early part of the schedule, numerous combinations were used and finally a set lineup of Kevin Hayes, catcher, Michael Harte, first base, Jim Hughes second base, Joe lnzinga, short- stop, Michael Hall Third base, and an outfield of Tim Pyznarski, John Kendrick and Dave Scukanec. A ten game winning streak of Conference and Suburban competition got the Redskins started. They stayed in the running for a second Conference cham- pionship until the last double-header of the season. The highlight of the season was State competition when Marist defeated Bremen and defending State Champion Brother Rice on shutouts of 9-0 and 2-0 by Don Pirkle and Mike Wisniewski. ln Regional competition Thornwood was also scalped by the Redskins 6-0. In a tough final Marist was victorious over Richards 2-1, for their first Regional championship and overall record of 24 and 10.

FROSH AND SOPHS PLAY BALL The freshman baseball team, under the guidance of Coach Mike Dooley, finished their season with a second place conference finish. Marist stayed in contention the entire season due to the fine pitching of Pete Vaulman and the outstanding defensive and offensive play of Flon Piarowski, Paul Krol, and Gary Wildner. Coach John Williams' sophomore team fell into many defensive and offensive slumps while struggling to a 12-13 season. The outstanding pitching of Matt Mudd and Bill Prokop are bright spots in the future of Marist baseball.
