Young braves will look to these elders many times during their years in our community for guidance. The elders are the backbone of our tribe, and we can draw on their adequate supply of knowledge and experience to help us reflect the attitudes and goals of this society. They have built and maintained the reputation upon which our tribe stands. With the right amount of examples, experience, and discipline, they can help a young brave develop into a proud warrior. There are many things about this year that will stay with us no matter where our lives may carry us. It often seems, when we look back, that the tough times weren't so bad, and the good times were even better. There were many unique characteristics of 1977. A new scheduling system left some students in a daze and others in delight. Due to a cold winter, we all listened to our radios in hopeful an- ticipation of a snow day. We watched intensely all year long at football, basketball, baseball, track, hockey, soccer, cross-country, and golf games. 1976-77 was overshadowed by joy and sadness. Bro. Vincent Collela, who shared his life with those of us at Marist, died on April 5, 1977, but he left a piercing impression on all of our lives. Near Christmas, Richard J. Daley passed away. He, too, shared his life with the people of Chicago. This year also held a certain amount of joy. lt held the joy that we experience on a Retreat, the joy of a 30 on the ACT, and the joy of a pink slip when we're late. lt held the joy of friends, and the joy of 2:30. But most of all, 1977 held for all of us the joy of being free to BE and to BECOME. DEDICATION . NO PRGBLEMH BRO RON lt is appropriate that the 1977 Plainsman be dedicated to a man who has devoted all his energies to Marist. A cheerful no problem has echoed through the classrooms and athletic fields of Marist for eleven years. An era with Horbs is coming to a close. We all realize that high school years are more than study years. These years are a time for sorting things out. Brother Ron has aided this process for many students. Whether working on Freshmen Retreats or preparing for State Track competition, he has instilled a spirit of un- selfish concern and friendship. We will long appreciate the role Horbs has played in our development. This tribute to coach, teacher, Brother and OK-person takes on a form that is more vibrant than merely dedicating a yearbook. The finest tribute to Brother Ron is seen in the lives of the people he has touched. is ' B v 'i ss B 2 Q l m l T BAND TOURS DIXIE l Marist High School boasts what it believes to be one of the best high school bands around. Along with its usual fantastic Christmas and Spring concerts, this group of talented musicians won a first place award for its performance in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The Band conquered the South with a tour of three Southern states, which included a concert at the Alabama State Capitol. The concert was followed by a reception hosted by Gov. George Wallace. T The Band has worked very hard throughout the year, wvith practices every morning and frequent long after- lnoon sessions. THE RED MA CHIN ON THE WARPATH IN '76 -RN The gridiron of Marist witnessed exciting victories and uncertain defeats this season. Because of the fact that many of the team's ex- perienced and inspiring players graduated, it underwent a series of radical changes. In the final days of August, the team was prepared for what would prove to be an in- teresting season. The team remain- ed spirited throughout the season, even after the heartbreaking final- second, one-point defeat, and clos- ed the season in a respectable third place, with victories over St. Patricks, Carmel, and St. Joes. Forming the nucleus of the team were the Seniors, all of whom played varsity 3 of their 4 years at Marist. Earl Ebers played first singles, Doug Mellen and Bill Abolt played first doubles, Junior Greg Temofeew played second singles, Sophomore Bill Zidek played third singles, and Rich Temofeew and Dave Kaiser played se- cond doubles. Rounding out the rest of the varsity squad were: Juniors Mike Cronin, Mike Casey, and Mark Gillespie. For the first time in Marist history, in District competition, the team finished in first place, despite a challenging St. Laurence team. In an all Marist Singles Final, Greg Temofeew defeated Earl Ebers to take first place. Doug Mellen and Bill Abolt won the district doubles title in defeating St. Laurence in the final. The other doubles team of Bill Zidek and Rich Temofeew lost in the first round but still traveled with the others to Arlington Heights to the State Tourney. In state competition, Greg Temofeew played his way to the top 20 in the state. Earl Ebers, and the team of Bill Abolt and Doug Mellen, finished in the top 40 in the state. More than 600 entries in singles and 600 in doubles are more than enough evidence of a very successful season! The strength and ability of the 1976-77 Marist Soccer team was put to a test this year, the team playing its toughest schedule ever. During their long and grueling season, they were crippled by injuries to key players. Nevertheless, they proved through their persistence and endurance to be an excellent team and a superior con- tender for the crown title in the future. WORLD FOOTBALL 3 f, ,.,,w , , ggi, My fm- . CHICAGO STING-HERE WE COME IN PURSUIT OF MMMW mmm., f M WNNMNWNM CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Marist High School has a very unique retreat lor, if you prefer, encounter l program. Ask any seasoned Senior and you'll find that retreats and encounters are constantly being offered and are always available to the student. For a small fee, he is fed, given shelter, and in some programs, provided with transportation. When the retreat begins, he finds that there is a sense of Christian Community. He feels the relationship of the people around him growing with each day. Soon he begins to turn his attention towards discussion, friendship, and Christian attitude. There is a respectful silence in the group when faculty or fellow students are speaking. This is also a new experience for most of the students who are used to informal conversations in class. The retreat for some may be a myriad of new ex- periences, and for others just a fulfilling weekend: but, actually, the retreats and encounters attempt to propel the oneness that the school desires to represent, to make the system work better, and to achieve a Christian attitude in daily life. THE MARIST STUDENT COUNCIL- A TRUE WORKING ORGANIZATION You can find the members of the Student Council hard at work in their office at almost any time during the day. After all, it's not an easy job channeling the voice of the student body to the faculty and administration, while at the same time organiz- ing activities like the Blood Drive, Homecoming, Ski Trips, and even new twists like Disco Night. Student Council is, year after year, an integral part of the school. Just look at the activities it sponsors . . . RALLIESI Through all that confusion: shouts, laughs, cheers, music, and general uproar at a rally, one can gain insight into the real Spirit of Marist-a Spirit that can never be captured between the covers of Yearbook-a Spirit dis- played by the students, faculty, parents and cheerleaders who have worked so hard all year long at rallies, Football, Basketball, and Soccer games, and also at Track Meets. Again this year, Marist has displayed a Spirit that always has and will continue to bind the students and help make high school life just a little more enjoyable. Go...Go.s..Go... Here they '. . ' shared, and experienced living their apostolic ideals. fs CELEBRATIONS! lt's so easy to just GO to Mass. How often are most of us really in- volved in the total meaning and progression of the Mass? lt's not so easy to be involved in a Mass, which is what Marist strives to have all of the students do at the various liturgies during the year. Together we attend Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and School-year clos- ing Masses. At the closing school- year Mass, we all listened in respect- ful attention to Bro. A TIME OF BOTH HAPPINESS AND SORRUW As we recall what Christmas was like in 1976, we think of the joy and sorrow it held for us. We remember the joy that the spirit of Christmas brought us, even if it was wandering through the halls entangled in a web of Christmas-tree lights. Some of us remember what it was ke walking through the streets of London on a foggy December night, and others remember our two-week vacation at home. C However, the Christmas season ushered in one of the oldest winters that has ever been recorded on Chicago's thermometers. ln the bitter cold, Richard J. Daley, who gied on December 20, was laid to rest. For years, Mayor aley had captured the love and respect of the citizens of Chicago and the people of this country. The people of Chicago lost not only the guidance that enabled Chicago to achieve its high status and respect, but it lost a great h uman being, Richard J. Daley. Mayor Richard J. Daley 1902-1976 A YEAH TO BUILD The 1976-77 basketball season was a rebuilding year for new head coach Paul Swanson and his staff. With Mike Collins as the only returning regular from last season's fine squad, the young Redskins found the tremendous schedule tough going. Things started shaping up at Christmas as the Redskins captured the consolation championship at the Centralia Holiday Tournament. By Regional time the young Redskins were playing good competitive basketball. Standouts this season were Seniors Mike Collins and Don Richardson. Four Sophomores played varsity basket- ball led by 6'4 Larry Tucker. We will also have an outstan- ding group of 8th graders entering our program. Next season looks very bright for the still young Redskins with a lot of experienced varsity players returning. They will have more size, strength, quickness, and scoring ability than last season. The Redskins will play one of the toughest schedules in the state next year and could be a con- ference contender. 5 FROSH AND SOPHS LOOK AHEAD This year at Marist the freshmen provided some heights of excitement and teamwork that their physical size could not match. Through blizzards and sub-zero temperatures, the 6:00 A.M. practices and hard work went on and the spirit was built. The team maintained its courage and spirit through the season in spite of the sadness they experienced in the death of one of their leaders, Bro. Vincent Colella. The Sophomores experienced a season of ups and downs. Their many hours of practice brought them third place in the Conference. Although St. Pat's was first, Marist was the only team to beat them. Marist Sophomores came out se- cond in the Thornton North Frac- tional Play-offs. 37 , 1 Wm xx MW' 1 ' 3 'xx N5f 55 1 'ii ,WEE V I ,ts ,SW REDSTICKS PLAY LIKE BRA VES The Junior Varsity and Freshman hockey teams both ended with winning seasons. lt is in this that the Hockey Club's success this season should be measured. John Olson, a junior, was named to the All-Catholic team for the second time, and the Varsity routed Sheppard High School 8-2 with freshman Ken Maziarek in the nets to end the season. With most homerooms entering, the school had yet another excellent program. Throughout the season competition was tough and spirits were high. Of course, the season had both dull and exciting moments, but for the first time in the program's history, the faculty team was defeated. The Intramural Referee's Association il.R.A.i, anchored by Mr. Luby, Mr. Moriarty, Mr. Martin, and Mr. Seputis worked hard, game after game, and remained a vital part of the Intramural Basketball program. ,, . . ..,,. ..--f 1 -1....,. WRESTLING The 1976-77 school year marked the beginning of a new sports program at Marist. For the first time in its 14 year history, wrestling was offered to underclassmen. The Sophomore team was anchored by such people as Mike Hurley 4167 lb. classy, Jim Dempsey 1126 lb. classl, Dan Hanson 4155 lb. classl. These players will be the foundation for a strong varsity team. FROSH AND SOPHS PLAY BALL The freshman baseball team, under the guidance of Coach Mike Dooley, finished their season with a second place conference finish. Marist stayed in contention the entire season due to the fine pitching of Pete Vaulman and the outstanding defensive and offensive play of Flon Piarowski, Paul Krol, and Gary Wildner. Coach John Williams' sophomore team fell into many defensive and offensive slumps while struggling to a 12-13 season. The outstanding pitching of Matt Mudd and Bill Prokop are bright spots in the future of Marist baseball. Of course, there was music, dancing, and par- tying, but the dance held special meaning for those who attended. lt marked the last dance the Seniors would attend while at Marist. The theme of the dance was Your Own Special Way, and two bands entertained the Seniors and their dates. The groups, Justice and Flyer Rock , played until 2 A.M., after which the Seniors and their dates were invited back to the Marist cafeteria for breakfast. Givens. A first at Marist! The students got a chance to take revenge on their teachers. The day was called the Pre-Finals Spectacular. Many students as well as teachers participated in a number of events such as the pie throw, dunk tank, and even the obstacle course. Mr. Martin, Bro. Gerard Brereton, and even Mr. Moriarty were beaned in the face with pies! One wouldn't be surprised to see Mr. Keegan drowning in the dunk tank or Bro. Dominick wrestling a student in the mud. FRESHMEN The door was open. They came, welcomed by an ap- propriate number of administrators, from everywhere-as a Senior would put it- out of the woodwork. The Freshmen assumed a catalog of faces and personalities. Different individuals assumed different routines and activities that suited their lifestyle best. But can you call the Freshmen of 1976-77 Bennies? Are they worthy of this rusty title? Has the image of the Freshmen collapsed? There is a new generation of Freshmen this year. A generation that never saw the old band room, the un- carpeted library, or witnessed the epochal bomb scares of the 1975-76 season. A new generation with a picture of Farrah in every locker. But some parts of the Freshman life never change. Like the young Indian Brave, the new Freshman realizes that four years of long, hard work await him when he starts his journey to manhood. Together with the aid of the ad- ministration, faculty, and the determination of the students, our new generation of Freshmen can be a true example of the united Christian Community within Marist High School. . wmilif 15. This name, it is generally agreed, fits the student in his second year quite satisfactorily. The sophomore finds many challenges along with some new and disguising responsibilities. He soon learns that he has no crutch on which to lean, and he learns the basic lesson that he must meet the expectations of the school or fall into the clutches of the dean. But most of all, the student learns that a sophomore, although he can look down at the freshmen, must still look up to Juniors and Seniors, thereby classifying him as a wise fool. :E .l f 'l ,sf 'l, if l :A fig iftiwtk it , i vw' uq'm'fF' af, imply 1 'fl ii? , 1 f , l u f , ,fl ' l li fill. The ceremony began with a Mass, where Jeff Zuiker delivered a cap- tivating homily on unity . As the ceremony continued, each student receiv- ed his ring from Bro. Anthony Iazzetti. The ceremony was very special for each of the Juniors because their rings will remind them throughout their lifetime of their own years here at Marist and the memories within. We'll use the knowledge that four long years of high school earned us, and we'll keep its memories long after we journey into society. No one really knows where our journey will carry us, but when we graduate in the spring of 1977, we'll be certain that we have obtained the skill and experience that we need to realize our own special dreams in future life. It was Jim Croce who once said, Tomorrow is just a dream away. For the seniors, life lies ahead. 23922 1 :WmM41wwwWviwwlcwWM-AufM72WWMWWWMWMHMMMMWWMWMWMWAKZWQW 0669253252 fiiiiiwkw GHZ!! !QsZSi Wv Zi Z if M3242 MHS Mi ZM.i 'QE WJQZQZ Ji? ?45 6WWWf5iQ 95632351 WSE 3 629 GWSSQZWK ZSWKQYWMWQ5 Z xiii EXW! 2625520 51 ii 215 54155 fgiiiwbkifvm 5293 59552 975525 Senior Year ls Having a Parking Spot As a Status Symbol William Abolt Raymond Acheson Bruce Anderson Kennith Anderson Kevin Ashe Mark Averett George Balling John Banks Robert B k M k Bartlett Robert Bartoli Charles Becker Michael Bergeron Robert Berk James Bilder Flobert Black Mark Blair Robert Blake Joseph Bonoma SCOU BOFQG 5 gg. , -- 2? 4? The classroom, the stage, the playing field, the journalism room, the ac- tivities room, preparing for a con- cert, doing volunteer work, all have a very important part in preparing you to be productive Christian members of society. I WW WWW i FOR TIME AND ETERNITY When a young brave enters the Marist tribe, he is just one of many open to everything the tribe has to offer. Although he may often think the proffered advice is unim- portant, he nevertheless follows it religiously, realizing that the same time-proven advice has forged strong warriors of his predecessors. He knows that a Marist BRAVE must be ready and willing to take his place in the front line of bat- tle, ready to fight for the principles instilled in him through four years of intensive training. At graduation the young brave feels adequately prepared to stand proudly before the Big Chief and accept in humility the honor he has so justly earned. The Braves of 1977 were especially privileg- ed to receive their MERIT of honor from John Cardinal Cody, Archbishop of Chicago! His Eminence encouraged his three hundred eighty-eight new warriors to face the future with courage, confidence, and spirit, the undaunfed spirit of the Marist Redskins. . i TTS'- at sf. it M xl A N k at I 5 ,ti i f 3,-v'r. Yet that in fact is what we are. The reason the world does not recognize us is that it never recogniz- ed the Son. Dearly beloved, we are ,God's children now: what we shall later be has not yet come to light. We know that when it comes to light we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he ls. 1 John 3, 1-2 Photograph by Bro Vincent Colella, F.M.S. 207 S A WORD OF THANKS O8 lt's finished! A phrase not greatly appreciated by someone with no association with the Yearbook. The completion of this book took the combined talents of a great many people. To them I owe my gratitude and deepest thanks! lt was these people who made my job of editor as pleasurable as it was. To the Marist High School students, without whom this work would have been impossible. To Root Photographers for their dependability and faithful service. To our Photography Club for the best pictures we have ever had. To Ron Kil whose fantastic art work inspired us throughout the book. To Inter-Collegiate Press, especially Ray Gilgenbach who gave so generously professional advice whenever it was needed. To the Marist Faculty and Administration, whose support and encouragement were unparalleled. To Bro. Dominick Pujia and Sr. Dorothy Ann for puttii up with me, showing me a new way, and giving their time and patience. And, of course, to the 1977 Plainsman Staff who put their all into this book to make it the success it is. Thanks again. lt is finished, but the memories and good times it will rekindle in the future are just beginning. I hope we have captured the Redskin Spirit for you and that you will treasure it forever. l wish the best of luck to next year's staff. A final Thank You, 4 Laws-72 If
