-gg M . ....,... 3 SB i Y BROTHER PIUS XAVIER, F.M.S, ' DIRECTOR-PRINCIPAL Dear Graduates, Now that you have completed your high school career, I feel quite certain that you realize that your tenure was during a time of confusion concerning our value system. We have experienced, and still are experiencing, a sort of internal and external War over the questions and value of the continued existence of Catholic schools. The criticism of our Catholic schools has hit every phase of their operation: they create a ghetto mentalityg they do not produce intellectualsg they turn out graduates who are so concerned with other worldly values that they are unable to compete economicallyg too much emphasis on religiong not enough emphasis on religiong too much in the Way of athlet- ics. Name it and our Catholic schools have been accused of it. lt is not my purpose here to refute these charges. This has already been taken care of by many eminent scholars. My intention in calling to mind the present controversy is to impress upon you the responsibility which is yours as grad- uates of Marist, a vital cell in our Catholic educational system. Evidence is plentiful to support the thesis that Catholic schools have been a significant, and possibly the most sig- nificant element in the Catholic Church. Your heritage as graduates of a Catholic high school is a great one, I am confident that your lives will bear fitting testimony to our Catholic education system. May the blessing of Almighty God and His Blessed Mother be with you always. Sincerely in J.M.J., Brother Pius Xavier, F.M.S. Director-Principal
