Frequently we hear: let us remove the shackles that bind and the halters that con- strain us. We are what we are and as evolution is slow to wrought change in the physical being so the evolution of social change is no less devoid of haste in its desire to evolve. No day will come when all at once the shackles will disappear and the halters fall away to leave us free to see the realities of other beings and other philosophies. They will have to wear from use until such time that they are cast aside along with other obsolescent trappings and vestiges of self concept and deception. Nothing will bring this about more quickly than rubbing of halter to halter and shackle to shackle. Rubbing which takes place as we stand next to others. A friction, as were, gener- ated-of contact as we meet and experience the equally bound. And so in time we shall become free not through isolation but through experi- ence. The machine brought to its fullest by con- tact born of his failure to see his own truth and the truth of others, war, gives us now the greatest opportunity to have contact, to bring friction, to wear thin, to cast away. Then this machine is surely irony, a prod- uct of strife-a builder of peace. But then that's consistent man and his pronouncements, and man and his acts-for is that irony also.
