MARIONETTE Marion College Marion, Indiana 1971 Co-Editors: Pam Allen, Bev Walker Business Manager: Gerry Davis Rector ' i -:, Dr. Marjorie Elder Neglect not the gift that is in thee . . . 0 Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings . . . I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God . . . For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; But of power, and of love, and of a sound mind . . . _ I am not ashamed; For I know whom I have believed, And am persuaded that he is able To keep that which I have committed Unto him against that day . . . Strive not about words to no profit . . . Foolish and unlearned questions avoid . . . But be gentle unto all men, Apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing Those that oppose themselves. Grace be with you. Amen. B.s. in Ed., A.B., Marion College; A.M., University of Wiscon¬ sin; Ph.D., University of Chicago; professor of English, Marion College, 1945-46, 1949-61, 1963-71; head of English de- I and II Timothy partment, Marion College, 1967-71. She has been generous to us and has handled our pretenses, our bluffs and absurdities gently. She has valued us and taught us greater things to value. And we have turned then back to ourselves, and seen a greater need for laughter than for bluff; To others, and seen a greater need for awe than scorn; And to God, and thanked Him for her gift. 4 Faculty.. One of these is the student concept of a Christian College. The founders, present alumni, and supporting church have had traditional concepts of a Christian college. Within the new generation of students many of these concepts are challenged. Out of it some may lead to more effective ser¬ vice. But we must also be aware of blind alleys or tangent ways that may dilute our institutional Christian testimony. During the year studies and steps must be taken to estab¬ lish fiscal policies and practices that will provide at the same time annual balanced budgets and continuing opportunities for growth of the college. A wrong turn here would have harmful effects. This is also the year of reexamination for regional ac- crediation. To make provision for instructional improvement is a vital part of the college program. Such improvement needs to enhance the college purposes. Truly our paths provide many opportunities to turn aside but we must be prepared both as individuals and as an institution to make the right turn to achieve progress toward our goals. ACTIVITIES The Marion College Student Government Organization, led by President Ron Batman, was alive in 1970-71, and kicking hard. No one on campus during the fall of ' 70 and spring of ’71 would have questioned MCSGO’s vitality, or denied that it had traveled far from the tradi¬ tional silent, honorary organiza¬ tion of a very few years earlier. Nerve; a sense of humor and drama; impulsiveness; or again, planned action; headaches; a deep desire for spiritually intel¬ lectually and socially construc¬ tive progress; demands; tact, and moderation characterized the group’s work. MCSGO Executive Committee, Dale Basham, Larry Minner, Bob Tippey, Ron Batman, Bruce Baker, and Bob Thyer, led as the group’s planning and appointing body. . . . and considered. 100 Secretary Marlene Titus listens between taking notes. Thought, second thought, pertinent questions, impertinent questions private self-questions resulting in clearer thought— these were signs of a student government organization growing up, growing out in 1970-71. Always this year, MCSGO meant news. It meant change. MCSGO Marion College Student Government Organiza¬ tion this year initiated several new programs, includ¬ ing: establishment of an office, various concerts for students, and a new dress code for athletic events. 1. He will present four programs. Irish journalist to lecture on campus from Nov. 16-17 Mr. Grattan Freyer, Irish cri- dc and journalist, will be on :ampus on November 16-17, 1970 as a Danforth Visiting Lecturer. The visiting lecturers pro¬ gram under which Mr. Freyer comes here was initiated in 1957 by the Arts Program of the As¬ sociation of American Colleges, and is supported by a grant from the Danforth Foundation. Its pur¬ pose is to assist colleges in their efforts to strengthen liberal education. Each year several people of outstanding intellectual stature from this country and abroad are made available to colleges and universities. They remain on campus for two days or a week. After graduating from Cam¬ bridge University with Honors in Science and English, Mr. Fre¬ yer studied language and took a Ph. D. at Dublin with a thesis on The Reputation of Machia- velli. ' He then spent several years in adult education, includ¬ ing work during the last war in England with the Army Bureau of Current Affairs. For the last sixteen years he has combined farming, potting, and horse-breeding in the West of Ireland with free-lance writ¬ ing and lecturing. He has tra¬ What’s , Happening? He interviewed Albert Camus in 1949. All of the recent trouble spots in Northern Ireland were visit¬ ed by Mr. Freyer, and inter¬ views with leaders on all sides were tape-recorded. Mr. Freyer’s current lecture tour is his seventh to the Unit¬ ed States. In the spring of. 1969 he gave a Quincentenary lecture on The Relevance of Machia- velli’ in the Albert Schweitzer series at New York University. Previously he lectured at many other colleges and universities, at Lisbon and Coimbra in Por¬ tugal, and in Rome, Bologna and Milan, Italy. He has alsc lectured in Dublin and at the Yeats International Summer School in Sligo. This is his second tour as a Danforth Vi¬ siting Lecturer. He has contributed to innumer¬ able periodicals on such topics as The Ideas of Machiavelli’ (Scrutiny), The Reputation of Machiavelli’ (Hermathena), The Politics of W.B. This space was donated by the Circle K Club, a service organization for col¬ lege men sponsored by Kiwanis. The basic goal of this club, is to develop the leadership quali¬ ties of the men on this campus. Circle K was new to Marion College last year and in March they received their charter. Within the next week or so, a member will be elected to take the place of last year’s presi¬ dent, Mike Troyer. Circle K hopes to sponsor a folk concert or a series of lectures on cur¬ rent social and economic con¬ cerns. The members meet on Tuesday nights at 9:30 in the Conference Room of the stu¬ dent center. Meeting on the second Mon¬ day of each month in Baldwin Food Center, is the women’s Christian organization of this campus. Suzanne Hughes is the president of Lambda Epsilon for this school year. Presently, the girls are visiting the Emily Flynn Home, a nursing home situation in Marion, and do var¬ ious requests, such as; writing letters for the elderly people there. Lambda Epsilon was started on our campus a yeai ago . This Spring they are planning an international day. A great honor for a student majoring in science, is being elected into Sigma Zeta, a na- tiohal honorary science society. The Marion College Alpha Ep¬ silon Chapter was started in -the Spring of 1969 and currently, Ron Wolf is the president. A student must have an academic average of a 3 point in science in order to become eligible for consideration fer membership by the club and science faculty members. Plans are now being made to initiate newly-elected members. Sigma Zeta attempts to promote scientific excellence in academic achievement. Students who are sincerely interested in biology may join the Bio Club , which will be meeting on Nov. 17 at 5; 30 in the Gold Room of Baldwin Food Cen- er. Donald Clapp, involved with computer electronics, will be the guest speaker. The pur¬ pose of the Bio Club is mainly to supplement class information. Dale Craker leads this club as president and serving under Dale is Francis Must apha as vice- president. The Student Ministerial As¬ sociation meets within the framework of the Practicum Seminar class in McConnChapel on one Tuesday or Thursday of each month. Dr. Sheets is the advisor to this organization, which is open to theology and religion majors. Serving as the president of SMA for this year is Stan Hoover. This organiza¬ tion is seeking to unite the mini¬ sterial students together for bet¬ ter service in the field of reli¬ gion. Walter Adams is the president of the Student Missionary Fel¬ lowship. On the first and third Tuesday of each month, business meetings are held in Baldwin Food Center. The remaining two Tuesday evening meetings are prayer cells. SMF is en¬ deavoring to create a widespread concern for world missions, but their concern does not stop with world missions. They are try¬ ing to witness to the. missior fiel d that surrounds us every day. A warm welcome is ex¬ tended to all students and SMF. encourages you to attend the Missionary Convention that will be held in College Church this week. Future teachers should be members of our Student Educa¬ tion Association, if they are planning to teach on eith a pri¬ mary or secondary high school level . This organization at¬ tempts to better prepare students for the teaching profession. In their meetings, speakers ac¬ quaint club members with cur¬ rent teaching methods in the dif¬ ferent school systems. This Tuesday night in Ft. Wayne, drugs, alcoholism, sex, and other problems which face teachers will be discussed at a convention. Several of the SEA members will be attending. At present, SEA has not set a definite meet¬ ing time. Helen Lovelace is the president. One of the most vitax organi¬ zations to the spiritual life of our campus is Student Con¬ ference. This is our college prayer meeting every Thursday night. Brad Snyder, president, leads many dedicated, Christian students as they pray for re¬ vival of the Holy Spirit on the students and faculty of Marion College. Julian Bond, member oj the Georgia House of Representatives, will speak at Marion High School, Sat., Nov. 1.4. Spurs Campus Activities ' he Journal, Tuesday, October 13, 1970 Work involved in Homecoming All the decorations will come down and all the floats will be dismarTtled shortly. The excitement and enthusiasm of Homecoming will become a memory. Many times we overlook the hard work that goes into making something like this weekend a great success. Students, faculty, administration, and alumni worked together to make this possible. All deserve a great deal of praise. Two people, especially, have made out¬ standing contributions to a successful Home coming. One is Millie Jacobs -- ever per¬ sistent, never discouraged. She always seems to be at the right place at the right time, giving words of encouragement and direction. Her dedication and loyalty to Marion College is genuine, sincere, and enduring. -She is a ladder in and of herself, bridging the past to the future — what MC now is to what it shall be. Ron Batman has also given much time and labor for Homecoming. The Queen ' s Con¬ test and Coronation, as well as many of Sat¬ urday ' s activities, were sponsored by MCSGO. Yet it wasn ' t Millie or Ron that made Homecoming successful. Many people were working with the Alumni Association and MCSGO. The Titan so ccer team made prepar¬ ation for the game. Others were decorating dorms or floats till early morning hours. Somehow, around Homecoming time, one gets the feeling that the issues that divide our campus are not as deep as they might appear; that a glimpse of optimism is warranted; that bridges of understanding between students, faculty, administration, and alumni are being built. Perhaps this is the real success of Homecoming. Voluntary class attendance urged A letter was approved by the Senate last Thursday to be sent to the Educational Policies Committee. This letter stated the request for all students having a G. P. A. of 3.0 or better to be free of compulsory class attendance. We feel that this reflects the opinion of the Student Body. The college ' s stand on class attendance has seemed muddy to some in the past years.
