The presidents new manse is situated on a peaceful stretch of East 43rd Street. 18 The President's Message As a Christian college our interests include the things of the spirit as well as things of the intellect. And since both mind and soul reside in our bodies we are interested in the earthy things. Sometimes it is these latter things that take a major portion of our time and energy: new buildings, new equipment, and the funds to meet these physical needs. This is progress. Improved methods of instruction, graduate studies for the faculty, experimental curriculum, independent study programs, a curious sojourn into the byways of knowledge - these activities in the frontiers of man's intellect also indicate progress. Peace of mind in the midst of a restless generation, purpose of life, the joy of sins forgiven, and the blessings of communion with God and His people are some ex- amples of progress in the realm of the spirit. True progress of a Christian college such as ours must encompass the improvement of the earthy things concerning a physical campus, the development of the things of the mind, and the cultivation of the things that knit man's soul to his God and give eternity mean- ing in the realm of time. A balance of all these marks the best and greatest progress. Woodrow Goodman, President ,am mn: ss a 1 nm 8 E: H. E :.. H H :.::: M .3 Q . H. w X' nz K nn E E .XV za? Fisher The Student Council, under the leadership of Duane Fisher, made much progress. The li- brary was opened on Saturday nights. Shutting the Student Center and opening the Snack Shop in the evenings has brought the refreshment and game center nearer the location of evening pro- grams and activities. The planning of well- balanced and varied menus was undertaken to ward off student complaints. The school blazer was revised. For public participation, the Student Council sponsored a spring program entitled Stand By America , a patriotic program with colorful scenery and lighting, and co-sponsored two press conferences with The journal. Millie Jacobs, Executive Secretary of the Alumni Association, directed the Student Council in the planning of the Accreditation Day activities. tudent Council Encouraged News Conferences, The Student Council Qleft to rightj Back row: Dr. Byron Tippey and Dean james Luttrull, sponsors. We could not possibly have touched upon all of the phases of Marion College equally, but we have tried to help the reader catch a glimpse of our college as it appears to the student who knows just a little bit about everything that's going on. Youth began their working careers at 14, there was no such thing as retirement and living standards were very low. Today, the average U.S. worker has tripled his production and buying power and has cut his work week by one-third. What changed all this? Machines, automation and modern production and business methods. Automation creates more jobs than it destroys. lt's the free enterprise way and has given us the highest standard of living in the world and the greatest degree of individual freedom. At ISM automated methods have enabled us to provide many more new jobs, improve our methods of generating and delivering electricity and provide our customers with improved, low-cost electric service in the bargain. 9.6 lrlunn .
