Wa 4 FORWARD OUR PASSING PARADE OF MEMORIES will contain both the pleasant and the tedious. Memories of a year at Marion College resem¬ ble the accumulation of material that has never quite been started. Dis¬ connected thoughts swirl through our minds: late hours of studying, the excitement of basketball games, the welcome change of vacations, the close bonds of friendship, the ban¬ quets. Numberless were those events that made these ' the best years of our lives.” For safe-keeping of these and many other memories, we present the 195 3 MARIONETTE. Problems of all types and sizes occur daily, but insight and appreciation of values enable them to endeavor steadily for improvement of the old and discovery of new fields of education and growth. Page thirteen Empty rooms, strange faces, home¬ sickness, soon change to fun and friendly gatherings. The Freshman is swept into the whirl of college life —Frosh initiation, club meetings, and trying to study. As the Sopho¬ more year begins, goals have been set as that Freshman has realized, No one of my fellows can do that special work for me which I have come into the world to do: he may do a higher work, a greater work, but he cannot do my work.” The determination to fulfill these goals increases during the steady climb from Sophomore, Junior, to Senior year. The grand march to the plat¬ form as the shaking hand takes the diploma brings a glad smile of sat¬ isfaction. Yet, at the end of these four years, you feel somewhat sad and wish you had stayed longer, studied harder, played oftener, and learned more. The Reason for All This? UNPHOTOGRAPHED SENIORS Mary Armfield Velma Brannon Richard Darst Ruth Darst Floyd Fisk Ruth Hupp Thomas Murray Clara Rains Norman Street IM T I DEAR SENIOR CLASSMATES . . . We cannot just start out by saying, Well, here another year has come and gone,” because this has been more tha n just another year in our lives; it marks the attainment of a goal we had set as freshmen. As we think back over the years we as a class have come through together, it has not been all hard study and work. There have been many grand times of relaxation and fun. Why, it seems only yesterday we had that circus for the entertainment of the Sophomore class! What a commotion we created when we were Freshmen! As Sophomores ourselves, we enjoyed the initiation cere¬ monies which we inflicted upon the Freshmen considerably more than the ones that had been forced on us the previous year. That same year we installed chapel platform lighting. Then came our Junior year. We really tried to out-do ourselves by being radically unconventional and purchasing class jackets instead of sweaters. An elaborate Junior-Senior Banquet we also sponsored and paid for. Last fall, when we returned to the campus, we could hardly conceive of the idea that we were actually Seniors. We stepped into our new role gingerly at first as if we weren’t sure that was our proper place. But by the time we had started on our Senior trip ( sneak” if no Juniors read this) we were veterans at acting as dignified Seniors. That trip! ! Destination, Gatlinburg and trouble! First the bus broke down, and then it broke down again, and then again. But the fun and beautiful scenery soon surpassed those unpleasant inconveniences. The Juniors did a wonderful job sponsoring the Junior-Senior Banquet. We Seniors relaxed, and tried to get the most enjoyment possible out of our last really important school social. It will be impossible for us to forget these many experiences we have had together in our four years of college. But we can’t stop here—this is our commencement! Now we are going out into life to be something on our own. What we amount to in the future is our individual responsibility. As a class from Freshman to Senior year, we have endeavored to be unusual and different. Let’s keep this same motto whether we go out to further our education in other institutions or to fill our chosen occupation. Let’s not be contented with the hum-drum, everyday and ordinary in life. Let’s challenge ourselves to change things about us, not for the sake of being different, but for the sake of making things better for mankind in the world in which we live—the world whose future we are vitally helping to shape. It hardly seems possible that we are winding up our third year of college. Why, just a few weeks ago we were laboriously going through the registra¬ tion lines for the Winter term and only a short time before that we were arranging our schedule for the Fall term. While I am reminiscing, I just recalled some of those exciting things that happened in those brief months. Remember those popcorn sessions at the first of the year when we were getting acquainted? and the plans of the upper classmen? Too bad we had to cause a change in tradition, but the sleuthing was fun. The Seniors were nice to us though in providing such a wonderful picnic later. When I wear my sweater I can’t help but remember our weary efforts to secure them. How we anticipated seeing them upon returning from the Christmas holidays, only to learn we would have to wait another whole month! They will be a practical reminder of our days spent at M. C. I suppose our greatest event was the class banquet when we fretted over plans to honor the Seniors and then dolled up to enjoy the occasion that is, all except the Clean-up committee. The step from the banquet to commencement always seems short and when we can breathe freely after exams and realize that we are at last eligible to fill the position of Seniors, we feel as if all the rough places were smoother than they felt. Our year as Juniors has passed and we look with anticipation to the honoi of being Seniors; yet it is with fear and trembling that we realize in a very short time we go out to face the world. God grant that as we make our scholastic achievements we will not forget the supreme aim but press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Phil.3:14). Oh, that as we anticipate the future we would be sure that Christ is directoi of our affairs and continues to guide. I hope to see each of you back next year and successful in the GRADUAT¬ ING CLASS OF 1954! As I sit here trying to think of something appropriate to say to a fine group of classmates, I find myself looking back on all the good times we ve had together. Yes, there has been hard work along with the fun, but somehow the hard work grows strangely dim in our memories, and our thoughts turn to those little things that make our college days so enjoyable. Remember when we as Freshmen first entered the halls of M. C. a little green and shaky? Me had entered upon our careers of higher education not quite knowing what it was all about. And, remember how as the days went by, and the charts, themes, and collateral were mastered we soon fell into the routine of college life? Freshman Initiation was a dreaded occasion that first year but after all was over we laughed and thought how much fun it had been, and began to wait impatiently until we would become Sophomores and it would be our turn. By the time we had handed in our last report and the last assignment was completed we had made many new and lasting friends, some that we were not to see again; others that would return the next year. The bonds of Christian friendship were strongly forged. As soon as we had welcomed our friends and the new students to our campus we began to hear rumors of an initiation being planned for the Freshmen. What an absurd thought! Soon enough though the results of the mysterious doings of our own Sophomore class were fully executed. When the last shoes were shined and that last paper skirt was put in mothballs we settled down to the more serious business of college life. Next was our class project—new chapel blinds. Committees were formed and duties assigned. As I look back on these words my eyes grow moist and I think to my¬ self, Truly it has been good to be here. Life has grown richer because of the priceless experiences of these days and years together. I am writing to you, not for reminisence’ sake entirely, but to remind you of the countless experiences we have shared together in this, our first year of college life. Little did we realize or imagine what would be the final outcome of these nine months of college education. Our hopes were pitched to the very highest frequency in the expectancy spectrum. In the same moment we were left with an all consuming dread for what was to be before us on the paths of scholastic endeavor. It wasn’t long though until we had explored into the recesses of our new surroundings and claimed them as our very own. Next to the devotion to our Alma Mater came the cherished membership in the athletic society of our choosing (perhaps more appropriately said, our persuasion). Rush Day, ended, was a major point in our lives and the birth of a new loyalty which will remain with us throughout the future years. Then, who can forget the thrill we witnessed at the sport event when our team was edging ahead in the final minutes of the game. Our vicariousness on the bleachers was climaxed at the magic of the final buzzer. Then we were reminded of lesson preparation that had been set aside for this more compelling drive. Due credit must be given the one to whom our group of one hundred and twenty was entrusted. Dr. DeVol, our sponsor, encouraged, advised, and di¬ rected us, and to him goes our deep appreciation. We were gifted with a wide range of personalities and talent in our class which made for an almost complete cross-section of interest and individuality. Our purpose, however, was vested in the one most important phase of life, To better know life itself and to serve Him best Who gave it to us. The bottom of this page is looming at me with the speed only equaled by that which will commemorate our absence during summer vacation. It is here then that I will say thank you for the splendid co-operation and enthu¬ siasm that made our first year at c ollege the success it was. I also wish to express my desire for a most fruitful vacation and above all, the Lord’s richest blessings and guidance for you as individuals and as a group, the LRESHMAN CLASS OL ’53. I remain respectfully yours, Richard Brown Lrcshman Class President Page forty-three At Marion College, the Word of God is made the Keystone of Truth. Daily chapel services, prayer meetings, revivals, and church services are times pro¬ vided for worshiping the Lord. Students who came to college as unbelievers have been call¬ ed into full Christian service. There are special spiritual groups where students may use their talents. As a Christian institution, Marion College has done and is continuing to do a great work. • ' ' t R E V I V A L The Fall and Spring Revivals are a very important part of college life. Workers whose lives are fully consecrated to God are chosen to lead the services. Through the ministry of Rev. Lyman F. Lance, Fall evange¬ list, and Rev. Paul Kindschi, Spring evangelist with Rev. SHIRLEY JOHNSON has participated largely in the field of music as a member of the a cappella choir, various trios and other ensembles, and ap¬ peared numerous times as a so¬ loist. EDWIN MOSHER’S interest has centered to some extent in the field of missions. This year, as president of the special missionary committee which sponsors our regular mis¬ sionary project, he has probably rendered his greatest service, but he was active also in the work of the Foreign Missions Fellow¬ ship. DALE BENEDICT has been a member of the College Male Quartet for the past three years and has traveled distances great¬ er than that of the circumfer¬ ence of the earth representing Marion College before the pub¬ lic. He served this year as presi¬ dent of the Student Council. GEORGE COLE was this year’s president of the Student Conference and has been active particularly in gospel team and other religious work during his stay on the campus. DAVID BLANCHARD can particularly represent our publications, having been both assistant manager and business manager of the Marionette , and having held several oth¬ er positions on the publication staffs. He was also very popular as the Senior Class president. WHO ? MARIONETTE STAFF Joyce Albright, Editor Mark Budensiek, Business Manager It’s been quite a year—full of postponements, full of deadlines that weren’t met and deadlines that were, great plans that never came off and some that did, people that co-operated and some that didn’t. We worked on it and sometimes it didn’t seem worth it. We overcut all our classes and then overcut again. But it’s been fun and experience and friendships and good honest work.
