GC 977.202 M33MA, 1949 The MARIONETTE MARION COLLEGE, MARION, INDIANA MARION COLLEGE GYMNASIUM i A Page four ? ; ELIZABETH AYERS LIBRARY ¥ t PARLOR Many questions of permanent importance are asked each year at Marion College. Aside from the usual ones there have been some of a different nature this year. “Am I dreaming?”, “Where am I?”, “Just how was this before?”, and others of similar nature have been asked by those entering the dormitory. A complete remodeling of first floor has contributed greatly to the beauty and usefulness of the building. Since the foyer is very practical for lounging purposes, the parlor may be reserved for more special usage. Some gifts to the parlor are a grand piano, a large mirror, lamps, and living room suite, the latter of which was made possible by the Indiana Missionary Society. Page six FOYER Another nice gift by the same organization is that of a drinking fountain presented in memory of Mrs. J. D. Williams. A very appropriate quotation appears on the plate, “As ye drink, drink also of the water of life.” The guest room, since the second night after completion, has been in almost constant use. Some appreciations expressed by our guests are: “This has been a dear haven,” and “A lovely room,” “Excellent taste,” and “There is a place of quiet rest.” The practice rooms, the students’ publications room, and the dean’s quar¬ ters are each just as important in their own special way. Page seven FOREWORD In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” The acknowledgment of Christ in all endeavors results in the assurance of direction by an omniscient mind and an omnipotent hand. It is humanly impossible to draw back the veil that enshrouds the guarded secrets of the unborn years, but it would be nothing short of blind, unfounded optimism to assume that never would there be a passage perilous when a trusty guide would be indispensable to safety. If God in Christ can paint the blush on the bud that hangs from the limb of the rose, and make the dew drops of morning tremble like molten diamonds on the virgin white lip of the lily, if He can plant the rivers in lines of rippling silver, and can cover His valley floors with carpets of softest green, tacked down with lovely daisies and laughing daffodils; if He can scoop out the basin of the seven seas and pile up the granite of the mountains until they pierce the turquoise skies; if He can send a Niagara thundering on a mighty and majestic minstrelsy from century to century; if He can fuel and refuel the red throated furnace of a thousand suns to blaze His universe with light; if on the lovely looms of heaven He can weave the delicate tapestry of a rainbow to throw across the shoulders of the retreating storm, and at even¬ tide fashion a fleece of crimson to curtain the couch of the dying sun, and acioss the black bosom of the night that follows, bind a glittering garment spangled with ten thousand stellar jewels, what kind of a faith is mine if I cannot believe and rest securely in the belief that this Christ whom I acknowledge will direct my life in a path chosen by His love, chartered by His wisdom, and made victorious by His power. Page eight DEDICATION To Dr. Allen Bowman, who has rendered a gracious service characterized by remarkable efficiency in the capacity of Dean of Marion College, who is unsurpassed as a competent instructor possessed with a personalized student interest, who has with daily consistency exem¬ plified the serenity of a Christ directed life, the 1949 Marionette is sincerely dedicated. In admiration of his genuine love for Christ, in appreciation of his willingness to offer material and spiritual counsel to those in need, in realization of the integral part he has played in the advancement of this institution, in honor of years of devoted service beyond the call of duty, we hold the presi¬ dent of Marion College in high esteem. Snow, W. Waggoner, E. Sheets, G. Draper FRESHMEN With each new school year something new is added—the Freshman Class. So, as usual, at the beginning of this school year a new group of students was enrolled in the student body. In true Freshman fashion they arrived. Some were shy, others bold; some were cheerful, others homesick. In true sophomore fashion they were received. Let all the earth keep silence before Him.’’ In this beautiful church the college students find a place of worship. Here there is provision for encouragement of heart, enlargement of vision, invigoration of faith, enlightenment of soul. Here one is made renewedly conscious of the satisfaction of a Christ-directed life. Here one may enter to worship and depart to serve. I II Page fifty-two REV. B. H. Page fifty-seven QUARTET Serving as singing ambassadors for Christ, the varsity quartet had a successful year. The members are: Gerald Smeenge, first tenor; Ross Vandine, second tenor; Glenn Draper, baritone; and Frank Harris, bass. During the summer months this group traveled 5,000 miles singing the gospel throughout Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Someone has said, “Music is the only art that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most delightful and magnificent gifts God has given us.” In using their gift of song, the quartet renders service to the school, the church, and the community. On Novem¬ ber 8, 1948, this organization made its grand debut on the Marion College campus with twenty-three charter members. Later twenty members were added on the basis of their ability in instrumental and vocal performance, and seven of the faculty as honorary members. Marvin Baker was elected president of this new club. Elijah Cockman served as vice-president; Vida Stair, secretary; Arlene Sheets, treasurer; Miss Ruth McCamman, sponsor. This organization held a closed program each month and presented two open programs during the course of the year. These entertainments proved a true fulfillment of the goal of the club which is expressed thus—to promote interest and efficiency in the art of music through listening and participation. ART FORUM An increase of interest in the field of art has made itself undeniably evi¬ dent within recent months. This gave rise not only for a definite place, but also an absolute need for the formation of an art club. Thus the new Art Forum came into being. For a motto this newest of all organizations on the campus chose “Simplic¬ ity is the key to all beauty.” Its purpose for existence is the encouraging of self-expression among the members and the adding to their knowledge of art. Dale Lappin was elected to the position of chief official. Norman Street officiated in his absence. Dorothy Gunby kept the records, and Hazel Rush was responsible for the funds. Miss Linn kept a guiding hand upon all im¬ portant affairs. ' With thirty members in the first year of its creation this new club gave an open program with a commendable display of artistic talent. Yes, we have found it— a literary society of outstanding merit. Rush Day found the members of the society distinguished by their green caps giving a royal welcome to the new students. After the blowing of bugles, the rumbling of drums, the ringing of the victory bell, and triumphant marches around the campus, a semblance of restored order found 99 new students had chosen the society of the green and white colors. John Snider served as president for the first term. Joseph Hunting was his successor for the winter term. Dr. Dayton was again elected sponsor. The Eurekans triumphed over the Amphics on the softball diamond. After some hard-fought games both the fellows’ and the girls’ teams were victors. The same was true on the basketball floor. Consequently, the victory bell again is in Eurekan posses¬ sion. This society sold 530 copies of the Marionette, thus claiming the loving cup. Yea! Eureka! Page eighty-two AMPHICTYONS With “Friendship” banner waving high, the “U. S. S. Amphic” sailed proudly into the new year. With billowing full-blown sails, the float representing the “U. S. S. Amphic” cruised around the campus on Rush Day giving free rides to all new recruits. The termination of the voyage on that first day found 92 new members added to the crew. Captain Harold Brady, First Mate Darrell Gumm, Yeoman John Murphy, and Commander-in-chief Prof. Main sailed the good ship safely into port. The Amphictyon Literary Society upheld the standard of friendliness and school spirit throughout the school year. Its members made a commendable showing on the ball diamond and basketball court. The sale of 339 copies of the Marionette are chalked up to their credit. Sail on! Amphictyon! Sail on! I owe it my zeal, my benevolence and my prayers. When I neglect its services, I injure its good name, I lessen its power, I dis courage its members, and I chill my own soul. I have solemnly promised in the sight of God and men to advance its interests by faithful attendance, by reading the Holy Bible, by never neglecting its ordinances, by contributing to its support, by meeting with my fellow members, by watching over their welfare, and by joining with them in prayer, praise and service, and that promise I this day renew, before God my Father, Christ my Redeemer, and the Holy Ghost my Sanctifier.—John Bunyan Smith.
