Sheffield, Associate Dean, Supervisor, Army and Navy Department, the i949 Orange and Black is affectionately dedicated. More than thirty years of service-the prime years of his life-have made him a part of the soul and body of this school. To everyone he is known as a punctual man. His students regard him as a patient and kind instruc- tor, always ready to give freely of his time and of his knowledge in help- ing them to solve their problems in mathematics. His fellow faculty mem- bers know him. to be a gentleman and a lover of tall stories. Some men-a rare few--by their Christian way of life, their manner of speech, their personal integrity, their sustained attention to duty, are tagged as true Americans in the finest sense of the word. Among these few is Colonel Charles H. Sheffield, We feel that he represents the spirit -the motto--of Marion Institute: Truth-Honor-Service. Colonel Charles l-l. Sheffield 'Wm 4 mal aww, i Colonel W. L. Murfee Colonel James T. Murfee, ll President Emeritus President BS., BA., MA., University of B.S., University of Virginia Virginia In the history of Marion Institute, the two names-Marion Institute and lvlurfee -are virtually one. Half a century ago, the founder of the school, Colonel James Thomas Murfee, relinquished his post as president to his son, Colonel H. O. Murfee. This scholarly gentleman served as president from l9OO to l9l5. ln the latter year Colonel H. O. Murfee retired because of physical disability. At this point, the Board of Trustees elected the founder's second son, Colonel W. L. Murfee, to the office of president. For twenty-nine years-until i944--Colonel W. L. Murfee remained in this post. At his own request, in I944, he was retired by the Board of Trustees. This Board immediately elected his son, Colonel James T. Murfee, ll, namesake and grandson of the founder, to the presidency of Marion Institute. Thus it is that the policies and spirit of Marion Institute have been fostered for three generations by men of the same family, Rarely, indeed, is an educational institution endowed with officers of such remarkable character, plan, and purpose as the presidents of Marion Institute. if 9Vineteen qorty-nine awulfff COLONEL LINTON I-I. Coaching was his first line of defense years ago ,.,. The Varsity football schedule was rough . . . turn back and have a look at it .,.. Yet the boys lived up to their name, The Fighting Cadets , , . Major Miklos was Colonel Murfee's right-hand man with the Varsity football team, started a fine season as Coach for B Basketball , . . and had to turn it looses Uncle Sam took Colonel Reeves to Austria .... So Major Micks. . , you know , . . had to eye the sticks. . , . Capt. The entire Staff of the Orange and Black wishes that every cadet in the Corps, every veteran student, every faculty member, and every person otherwise interested in Marion Institute may enjoy this book of pictures covering the scholastic year l948-'49, We realize that no picture record is ever totally and absolutely complete, but in this work we have made a sincere and honest effort to include everything possible up to the moment of going to press. It would be absurd to presume that an annual would be completely free from errors. For those mistakes we may have made, we ask that you remember the' size of the job and the details necessarily involved , . . and that any mistake here or there is wholly non-personal and unintentional, We extend our thanks to the Cadet Corps, the Faculty, all organizations within the school for their perfect willingness and cooperation in the work of making the whole series of pictures, both individual and groups. No one could ask support any better than, you gave us. Likewise, we should like to say that the Orange and Black has been magnificently subscribed to . . . a fact in itself which indicates the healthy state of the finances of this publication. At this moment we believe that the Orange and Black will stand firmly on its own and pay its own way. Every student in Marion lnsti- tute, cadet or veteran, has a right to feel proud of this , . , for it is the help of each of you, indi- vidually, which is responsible for this book. To Mr. Kenneth Land, the gentleman who made our pictures-with one or two exceptions, we say: Many Thanks . . . we appreciate your work and your personal courtesiesf' We are very grateful to every business firm that has an ad in the pages immediately to follow. The support-in the form of money and good will-+of these firms is genuinely appreciated. To us it is a pleasure to know that they extend this warm and friendly hand. To Mr. George Preiss of The Paragon Press we are indebted for the answers to vexatious ques- tions as we worked along. We take this occasion to say Thank You to him for his- pleasant and courteous assistance, i Let us make a little comment, and then we are at the end. The Staff as a unit has enjoyed the preparation of this year's Orange and Black, Much work has been needed . . . and our job is com- pleted . . . something which leaves us with a very pleasant feeling. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy looking through these pages again and again. C -7913911 Grange and q3la,ck 7f1-eslaffaflfzegfzangeancflsvack Lounging: Donald'S. Vines tchiet oencit sharpeneri.
