1970 — 71 Each year the Yearbook Staff dedicates the yearbook to a deserving member of the high school faculty or administration. The person we chose this year, starts her day here at school earlier than any of us and then ends her day after many of us. This woman comes in contact with every student and administrator at one time or another during the school year. She is the person who keeps rec- ords of all our achievements, grades, and failures; she adds and takes away names for detention, she keeps budget books for our organizations; in fact, she constantly contributes to the betterment of all students and faculty, and thus, puts herself second to her work. Not only has she spent many of her hours at Marion High School, but she has been a secretary or bookkeeper all her life. Her business occupation started after she graduated from Fairbury Nebraska Business College. She has been very active in other areas of her life and through- out these years has always been interested in her family and friends. Because of your fairness and honesty, and your concern for each and every one of us, it gives us great pleasure to dedicate to you, Mrs. Jessie Muck, this 1970-71 MARION WARRIOR! 2 Alumni of MHS will remember not just the interesting or difficult courses they took, but also the extra-curricu- lar riches which gave them new looks of life-and perhaps even directed them to their chosen fields. n1 . . . _ Terry Fruechting, Mr. FHA Planting the FHA rose bush in front of school oTfflv® And that's the truth. .. 1 love it, I love it. .. To accomplish this, a harmonious relationship must exist between the students, teachers, and parents. If any of these people lag behind or turn their responsibilities over to others, then the student is handicapped by not receiving the best possible education. For this reason, everyone must strive to continually improve all the factors that will insure a good educational program for all the students. THEY LEARNED When one thinks of the guidance, the long hours spent on grading papers, trying days in the classroom, and reliable sponsors; naturally one is prone to remember the good ole teachers at MHS. Our role as a student will never be untroubled, but the knowledge gained lessens our burden. These tutoriates, who presented us this obtained knowledge, merit this distinction; which will lead each unto his own. The freshman's first year in high school has been an extremely rewarding one for them. They experi- enced the various anxieties and thrilling excitements of high school life. During the year, many freshman were active in musical activities, extra curricular activities, and sports. Looking forward to the future, this freshman class has some mighty big shoes to fill, but are hopefully capable of completing this task with the joys and inspirations of high school life. Upon this date, this now unsuspecting class of juniors will begin the completion of their treasury of memories created during their cherished years of high school. However, if we may return into the present day situation, we find these energetic juniors participating in the anxious moments of their play, Up The Down Staircase, and the Jr. -Sr. Prom. Also, careful observers will find the junior class well represented in sports, music and other organizations. All in all, it proved to be a success- ful year for this active class. Each member of the class took an active part in organizations and senior names filled the honor roll each six weeks. The class of '71 was filled with gifted musicians, atheletes, cheerleaders, and scholars. Receiving rings, taking senior pictures, and choosing graduation announcements were only three of the many anxious mements shared by all seniors. This was a most memorable year of trials, tears, and triumphs of the Senior class of 1971. The long, hard hours of strenuous practicing and strategic planning resulted as a tri-championship in the CVL league. Once the boys entered onto the field, they lost their personal identities and fused into a determined, hard-hitting team. They function- ed as a single unit in order to achieve their ultimate goals. Our formula proved a success when we used the ingredients of warrior power, super milch school spirit, teamwork, and the skillful guidance of Coach Dreier and Assistant Coach Strange. Winning was not always in the score, but in the experi- ence, competition, play, and attitude. Football also provided a release for emotions—for the players, a physical experience, and for the fans--the emotion- al support of every play. FRESHMEN TEAM ROW ONE: J. Coe, D. Krause, S. Conyers, J. A flaming arrow sailed threw the air to ignite the enormous bonfire which opened the 1970 homecoming ceremonies. The spirited at- mosphere within the students created the determination to defeat rivals of Centre. The intense excitement of the game was present at the half-time ceremonies of the football game. October 23, 1970 proved to be a most memorable and meaningful experience for our three enchanting homecoming candidates: Debbi Case, Rae Jean Woerz, and Sue Wood. Debbi Case, escorted by Mark Applegate, was crowned 1970 Football Homecoming Queen while the Marion High School Band played More . Mfiss Pat Wood, 1969 Football Homecoming Queen, completed her reign by passing on her distinction as queen to her successor. This drizzly evening prevailed with mixed emotions—sadness and gaiety. Queen Debbi reigned over the annual homecoming dance with charm and grace. The decor of the dance was done in beautiful, lustrious shades of blue and silver. Students, faculty, and alumni danced to the sound of Central Park . These festivities created memories which will always be cherished by many for a lifetime. TEAM PUTS FORTH VALIANT EFFORT All-League Honorable Men- tion--B. Finke and D. Kea- zer. The varsity basketball team finished a vigorous year in the 1971 season. The War- riors rose over their competitors a few times but displayed their great team effort through- out all the games. It was a competitive season with the league teams showing a great display of work. Even though the Warriors did not win all of their games, they showed Warrior Pride throughout the season, with a special thanks to the Senior Warriors. Phil Strange, Coach The Warrior B-Team, although secondary to the varsity team, completed the 1971 season with alot of great warrior pride. In- stead of using a certain few, Coach Strange allowed all of his team to get a chance to play. This gave each boy an opportunity to show his skills which were brought out in the vigorous practice sessions. The score of the games did not tell the whole story, for the boys put out alot of work which everyone should be proud of. B-TEAM FIRST ROW: M. Edmunds, C. Costello, D. Helmer, H. Crainer, J. On the exciting night of February 5, 1971, three lovely queen candidates participated in the annual Queen of Courts ceremony during the Marion-Herington game. The radiant candidates Sandra Anderson, Pamela Griffith, and Ginger Helmer enjoyed a spirited week as all classes showed their school pride. However, during the royal halftime ceremony the excitement came to a climax as the 1971 Queen of Courts was chosen; Miss Pamela Griffith. Not only was the ceremony an enjoyable and breath taking event, but the Warriors rose over the Railers in an auspicious victory. To end the night's excitement, a dance honoring the new Queen and her attendants was held in the bandroom, where the theme, Cher- ished Moments was beautifully carried out. All of their trophies represent many long hot hours of fatiguing practice, the determination to succeed and the willingness to unite as a team. Much of the credit belongs to the track boys, but everyone always keeps in mind that without the ad- vice of Coach Rex Wilson and Assis- tant Coach Phil Strange, these fel- lows would not be 110% ready to do their best. Some of their outstand- ing efforts are as follows. At the State Indoor Championship at Manhattan, Doug Keazer placed third in pole vault and Jack Loomis placed first in the sixty yard dash. At the State Outdoor Track Meet, Doug Kelsey placed first in long jump, Doug Keazer placed fourth in pole vault, Jack Loomis placed fifth in the one hundred yard dash, and the 880 relay team, consisting of Dannie Jewett, Jim Magathan, Paul Swan, and Jack Loomis, placed third. 49 Kendall Helmer Doug Kelsey GOLF TEAM, ROW ONE: T. For the first time in a number of years, a comedy was pro- duced and was well received and enjoyed by everyone attending. Under the capable direction of Miss Carolyn Groves and student director Joanne Popp, along with devoted sponsors Miss Janet Cyr and Mr. Steven Davis, the two-act play became a highly successful production which gave the viewer an image of Calvin Coolidge High School. In Up The Down Staircase, author Bel Kaufman shows the realities of the teaching profession and the final triumphant joys resulting from Miss Barret's efforts. His widow suspects that he's been poisoned, so she spirits his body away to a creaky old mansion in the suburbs, hoping she can secretly arrange a postmortem. Hannah, Rodney's first wife, tracks Marcia down with the help of George Mollison. Recovering Rodney's corpse, however, proves more difficult than Hannah imagined. They become involved with Loretta Page, who is concealing her murderously demented sister, Teresa; Betsy and Carla, who are trying to escape the city; and a host of other people who drop in and out of the peaceful suburbs (and the window seat)! On April 16, 1971, the Senior Class under the direction of Miss Groves and student-director, Karen Kjellin presented the laugh-filled comedy, Terror in the Suburbs. The cast included Denise Wiens, Pam Griffith, Sue Wood, Sandy An- derson, Tom Loney, Brenda Helmer, Janet Lawrence, Mike Bredemeier, Brenda Foth, Clare McGinness, Brad Case, Kendall Helmer, Steve Fillipp, Dick Wiebe, Lloyd Behrendt, Mark Applegate, Mark Rathert, and Terry Frans. But without that one person, the choir would not be complete. The pianists put forth extra hours of practice and at times play on short notice. Their efforts and accomplishments do not go unnoticed by the choirs and Mr. Hie- bert. Their contributions to the vocal department were deeply appreciated. The enthusiastic band, under the direction of Mr. Conrad Steinel, participated in many musical events in the year 1970 - 71. In the fall, the Marion High School band was heard marching up and down the streets of Marion, practicing many long hours for parades and for half-time ceremonies of many football games. The band also presented several concerts and brought back several honors from State Music Festival. Conrad Steinel, Director TWIRLERS: J. Friesen, Drum Major P. Griffith, K. Lundgren, S. Hoover. Mr. John Hudson The enchanting night of May 1, 1971 was an exquisite experience for the Sen- ior Class. The Junior Class honored the Seniors by presenting them with a beau- tiful banquet and a heavenly prom. The speaker at the banquet was Mr. John Hudson, a former English teacher at Marion High School. The starry stream- ers, silver moon, and beautiful color scheme proved to make The Age of Aquarius a splendid prom. The evening was concluded by The Illusions , a six- piece band, who played enjoyable music. Without the help of the patient Junior Class sponsors and Miss Carolyn Groves, the prom would have been an impossibility. INVOL VED IN AMERICAS FUTURE FIRST ROW: Mr. Goering, sponsor; G. Lucinda Jost, FFA Sweetheart Although the membership was small this year, the Marion Chapter of FFA was still very active in local, district and state activities. At the beginning of the year the chapter members attended the state livestock judging contest at the Kansas State Fair. During the year they participated in various district contests including leadership, agriculture mechanics, horticulture, speech, meats, judging and identifica- tion and crops. In October they attended the National FFA Con- vention in Kansas City. In April several members participated in the state FFA contests and convention held at Kansas State University. This year in addition to the annual pest eradica- tion contest, the chapter also sponsored a coyote hunt. A new event this year was the FFA Sweet- heart Contest. Several girls participated in the interesting and entertaining chore night and talent night. Lucinda Jost was crowned the Chapter Sweetheart at an all-school dance. Russell Bowers was elected the South Cen- tral District Sentinel for the year. The senior members toured the plant at Hesston Corpora- tion in May, where they were able to see the construction of different machines used in agriculture. If one would zero in with your magic look- ing glass on all the FHA' ers you would find an active group of go-getters. The Future Homemakers of America were busy wash- ing windows in both the spring and the fall. Other fund raising projects involved a bake sale and a rat race booth at the annual Stu- Co carnival. The Marion chapter can also be seen through the looking glass as being very active in the district and state level of the organization. When this active group is not found raising money or working on group projects they will be attending a chapter meeting which is always highlight- ed with a special guest or welcomed speak- er. Today, in this shrinking world of jet and supersonic planes, lan- guage study grows increasingly important. It is in the intent of the German Club to give those who study German at MHS an opportunity outside the classroom to become ex- posed to the German people, their way of life, customs and history in a setting that is interesting and enjoyable at the same time. One of the highlights of the club's activities during the year is the annual trip to the Rhinelander , a German restaurant in Wichita with a visit to a show. For the first time the German Club presented this year a program Ein Deutscher Abend as a service and a link to the community. Through the freewill donations at this event a fund was established which is to help launch a new Foreign Exchange Program between Germany and Marion High School. It is hoped that already this sum- mer at least one or two MHS students will be able to spend approxi- mately four weeks in Germany as our ambassadors of goodwill and to implement and expand their knowledge of the German language and the German people. The animal-shaped pinata, made from balloons covered with paper machet and stuffed with popcorn balls, candy, gum and pennies, was hung from the ceil- ing in the bandroom. Joey Ragole, Roger Hannaford, Brent Colie, Sherie, Cindy, and Cynthia Christensen were among those students who built the pinata. Before the party started Shelley Batt, Joanie Elling, Gerry Warneke, Mary Endres, Teresa Turk, Debbie Case and Sandy Anderson busied themselves cooking frijoles, tacos and bunuelos. As the party pro- gressed, one blindfolded student with a baseball bat swung at the pinata. After five or six students tried, unsuccessfully, the pifiata was finally broken and students scrambled for the candy and gum. Other activities were a trip to Wichita in which students saw the classic Gone with the Wind and ate a filling Mexican dinner at ElCharro. Bill Finke was in charge of the spring trip. Librarians Club began as an organization of the school li- brary assistants. The major purpose of the original group was to provide training in library skills and services. During the years the membership was opened to other interested students and in 1970-71 the membership hit a record total of 66 members. The club meets once a month throughout the school year and con- cerns itself with library related affairs. This year the members helped the City Library distribute materials used in a survey of public library service in Marion. Our programs included a film dealing with the Eisenhower Library, a book panel presented by Senior English students, and a brave attempt at local movie programming. The club earned money by working concessions at ball games and participating in the all-school carnival. The highlight of the year was a field trip to Wichita which included a trip to the Library for the Blind and Visually Handicapped and to the Wichita Public Library and a dinner and movie. The club is a member of KLASS and Lucinda Jost served this year as state recording secretary of that organization. LIBRARIANS CLUB, FIRST ROW: C. Steinel, K. Smolik, D. Douglas, A. Hett, R. Oiler, W. Vocational education is that part of education that deals specifically with the acquisition of skills, understanding attitudes, and abilities necessary for entry into an occupa- tion. For certain occupations this requires college prepara- tion and several years of study. Other occupations demand far less formalized training. The Flint Hills Area Vocational Technical School is specifically interested in the training that can be achieved through high school, immediate post high school, and adult classes through a one-year or two- year training program. Their goal is to put knowledge in action by imparting profitable skills to the untrained, or increase the knowledge of those already trained. The International Thespian Society is an educa- tional organization which aims to establish and advance standards of excellence in all phases of theatre arts, and which aims to create an active and intelligent interest in theatre arts in secondary schools. The focus of the Society has always been on the student, himself—his achievement, his involvement and the betterment of his education in theatre arts. Being an honor society, Thespian membership is grant- ed for the performance of meritorious work in theatre arts which meets the general guidelines of the Society as well as the qualifications and standards of the re- spective Troupes. One of the most active and important organ- izations involved in school activities is the Stu- dent Council. For this organization is the basic link between the student body and the adminis- tration. Its basic purpose is to regulate student activities and bring the concerns of students before the administration. Because StuCo, like any other organization, has a need for adequate funds, it has sponsored such events as the annual all-school Carnival, several interesting lyce- ums and game concessions. For additional en- joyment, they organized after-game dances, Spirit Week and the Mock Homecoming Game. All of these activities helped to make Student Council a great success this year. This fun-filled year has been caught in a book that will be kept as a memory to everyone that has been envolved. Many people have worked long hours assembling the photos, write-ups, and com- mentaries, but our sponsor and Sen- ior editor have contributed so greatly to this book that without them it would be nothing. The Yearbook Staff of 1970-71 hopes that you appreciative students will enjoy your new yearbook and we hope it captured a few of your memorable moments. . YEARBOOK STAFF, FIRST ROW: J. GIRLS TRA VEL TO SUPPORT TEAM The enthusiastic Pep Club of 1970- 71 once again supported the eneigetic Marion Warriors through a fantastic football season and very challenging basketball season. Under the direc- tion of Mrs. Paula Henry and Pamela Griffith, Pep Club completed many successful extra-curricular activities such as the ugly leg contest, teachers' pep assembly, both enchanting home- comings, burning of the dummy, and the Indian Pow Wow Dance. The sport season's events were also backed with lots of signs and a tremendous amount of spirit. Some of the money-raising projects included a successful car wash and many cake raffles to add to the enjoyment of home basketball games. All and all, the activities and spirit of an enthusiastic organization such as Pep Club added many exciting moments to the regular routine of everyday school life Doug Kelsey cuts cake provided by Senior girls. Through the boys' participation in different sports, they have created much school pride, and school spirit. The fellowship of Christian Athletes is a movement of faith and of action. It is constantly striving to strengthen the moral and spirituaL fiber of the athletes and coaches of America. In its fellowship of bringing together the greats and the unsung he- roes of the sports world, FCA seeks to show that it is both possible and practical to be a Christian on and off the athletic field. Its approach is simple. The FCA seeks to bring athletes and coaches together to discover that it is not necesary to be a holier-then-thou type person, but that any athlete or coach can bear witness to his spiritual convictions in every daily ex- perience. A few basic principles guide the FCA participants: (1) Be more God-conscious than self-conscious. (2) Be honest. (3) Be consistent in the living of your convictions. (4) Be a churchman. The FCA's one big project this year was raising money to purchase a weight lifting machine for the high school. FCA, ROW ONE: D. Marler, M. Magathan, G. Coe, C. Costello, D. Keazer, R.
