The cold Halloween night of October 31 took on a special meaning for three lovely Homecoming Queen candidates: Janel Klose, Vickie Vajnar, and Pat Wood. The Homecoming festivities began with a hard-hitting battle against the Peabody Warriors. Excitement mounted as the half-time ceremonies drew near when Nancy Olsen, 1968 Homecoming Queen, would reveal her successor. The Marion Warriors presented Queen Pat and her attendants with a 26-16 victory over the Peabody Warriors. The theme of Sunrise, Sunset was beautifully presented at the Homecoming dance on November 1. An array of bright sunshine colors and decorative murals created an atmosphere of warmth and pleasure. M. H. S. students, faculty, alumni, and citizens of the community delighted in the music provided by the Downbeats. The dance honoring Queen Pat concluded a most memorable event. Vicki Boese, Cathy Coe, and Shirley Helmer were escorted down the path to the awaiting throne by three of the basket- ball varsity. As the excitement rose, Cathy Coe was crowned the 1970 Queen of Courts by her escort, Mike Regnier. Queen Cathy and her attendants reigned over the last half of the fierce battle be- tween the Marion Warriors and the Council Grove Braves. The boys also placed fifth at the Manhattan Regional. The team, consisting of thirty-six boys, includes two seniors, rated quite high not only as a single unit, but also as in- dividuals. The state track meet proved extremely successful for two of the Warriors—Doug Kelsey, who placed third in the broad jump; and Craig Smith, who placed fourth in the high hurdles. The organization began its busy schedule by serving refreshments and helping the faculty on enrollment day. Throughout the year, the Student Council sponsored entertaining lyceums and assemblies in addition to the traditional Homecoming festivities. In order to create some M.H. S. ’’Christmas Spirit, the Student Council festively decorated the school in keeping with the Holiday Season. The biggest and most popular event sponsored by Student Council during the year was Tork Week, which included Clash Day, a lyceum with various student-planned events, and a dance. The week ended with a carnival which everyone agreed was a great success. Later in the spring, the Student Council sponsored the annual stu- dent elections. It also planned a Student Teacher Day with students replacing the teachers and tasting the rugged teaching profession for one day. The end of school brought an end to the function of the Student Council officers. Nevertheless, the work for the new officers was just beginning. The Student Council, under the guidance of Gordon Wakeman, was successfully an organization FOR the students. Clash Day Queen and King 31 Chuck Naidl presented lyceum on reptiles. These activities include going to numerous contests, taking trips, and the annual banquet at which awards for the year are given, as well as an- nouncing the officers for the following year. At the beginning of the year the officers attended the district leadership school to improve their leadership capabilities and later in October went to the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. The district contests that the chapter entered were the speech contest, agricultural mechanics contest, and the crops contest. The chapter was also represented at the state FFA contests and convention held in Manhattan. The' senior members toured the plant at Hesston Corporation in May, where they were able to see the construction of different machines used in agriculture. Each year the chapter also has a pest eradication contest, the losing team sponsoring a party. TOWARD NEW HORIZONS The Marion Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America began a busy year with its first money- raising project, a rummage sale. During the year, with Mrs. Pauline Ferrell as sponsor, and Sandy Turner as president, the organization sponsored var- ious fun-filled events such as the Parent Potluck, FHA Week, and the annual Senior-Eighth Grade Tea. In addition, the chapter was well represented at both district and state FHA meetings. At each monthly meeting the girls were entertained with informative talks presented by members of the chapter. The officers worked diligently to make FHA a time for fun and relaxation--and a big success. ROW ONE: Officers: V. Vajnar, (District G, 2nd Vice-Pres. ); S. Helmer, (Song leader); J. Numer- ous activities of the Librarians include concessions at football and basketball games and a booth at the StuCo Carnival. In April the group toured the ElDorado High School and Junior College libraries and attended the movie Oliver in Wichita. Spring activities also included the State KLASS meeting at Emporia where Pat Endres served as recording secretary. Under the leadership of Mrs. Paula Henry and Cathy Coe, the Pep Club sponsored various activities and promoted school spirit at all the games. The Pep Club began a new year with bright new uniforms and shakers. 'During the year, the girls sold Back the Warrior buttons and Marion Warrior license plates. They carefully planned and deco- rated for the annual Football Homecoming and Queen of Courts activities. In addition, the Pep Club sponsored a shooting gallery booth at the Stu- Co carnival. Before any of the other school activities had started, the Marion High School Band was heard several eve- nings a week marching up and down the streets of Marion preparing for the many marching opportunities in parades, as W’ell as during the half-time of many football games. The band, under the direction of Mr. Conrad Steinel, participated in K-State Band Day, many parades, music contest, and their own Winter and Spring con- certs. With the honor of being chosen the only band to participate in KSTC's annual music clinic for the sixth consecutive year, the Marion High Band is considered one of the finest in the state. In addition, the Marion High Musicians brought home many honors from the state Music festival at Emporia. FIRST ROW: J. Lentz, D. Link, B. Bowers, M. Hett, M. McGinness, P. Vinduska, J. Widler, R.J. Jacobs, is the story of a small English family and its relationship to a dried monkey’s paw. The paw has had a spell placed upon it so that three people can each have three wishes. The obstacle is that the wishes would always bring sorrow to the owner of the paw. FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON Getting to ’’Nose You! I Think He's Writing OF MICE AND MEN! On the evening of November 21, 1969, the Junior class, under the direction of Miss Ellen Lenz with Karen Kjellin as Student Director, presented their play, Flowers for Algernon. The main characters were: George Coe, Janet Hanson, Brad Case, Janet Lawrence, and Kendall Helmer. The class, for their many long hours spent in hard practice, was rewarded with a most recep- tive audience. Charlie, the main character, is a mentally retarded young man whose life is strangely inter- woven with that of a laboratory mouse called Algernon. Both receive surgery which has the effect of increasing their intelligence to genius level. Charlie actually becomes much smarter than his attractive teacher, Alice, and they fall in love. However, Charlie sees that Algernons intelli- gence is decreasing rapidly in proportion to the rate at which it increased. Charlie realizes that the same fate awaits him. As his mentality slowly de- creases, he painfully makes the decision to go to the Warren Home for the mentally retarded. Sorry, Charlie! 50 44 COTILLION” What an evening—May 2, 1970! The annual Junior-Se- nior banquet and prom was truly an exotic night to remem- ber. St. Mark's Activity Center took on an entirely differ- ent perspective as the Junior class lavishly decorated in a French accent. A sparkling fountain surrounded by an intri- cate wall design depicts a most beautiful ballroom. Patterns in pastels highlighted tables and background. After the prom- enade, the students and faculty enjoyed a delicious meal served by the sophomores attired as French waiters and waitresses. The program featured Mr. David Fruth, former guidance counselor, who presented a most interesting and informative talk. Paul Rempel of Tabor College provided the special music. Following the banquet, the prom featured the music of The Great Arrivals. The juniors displayed an extra amount of hard work and they are commended for honoring the se- niors with such a beautiful and enjoyable evening. SENIORS President.........................Jane! Classrooms are emptied as the students and teachers pass through the doors of M. H. S., accept- ing the challenges of tomorrow. A year of many memories again come to an end. The value of these ever-increasing memories mellows with age. Age strengthens our thoughts, and this book enhances the value of our treasured memories of M. H. S. . . . 69-70 . The Yearbook Staff of 69-70 served as a unit that compiled the record of student happenings—not an easy task in any respect. This year, the staff consisted of twenty- eight hard-working, dedicated students who wished to present to the public a complete account of this remarkable institution, not only in words but also in many unforgetable pictures. These staff members were able to meet each deadline with a feeling of re- lief, accomplishment, anticipation, and exhaustion. The staff of the 70 Warrior worked many hours in order to be able to present a meaningful yearbook that will be a remind- er of M.H.S. !
