THE WARRIOR Marion High School Marion, Kansas Susan Hansen . . . Editor May 22, 1969 Dedication The members of the annual staff are proud to announce that the recipient of the 1969 Marion High School Warrior dedication is Mr. Kenneth Forsyth. During the past two years, Ken Forsyth has become well respected and admired not only by the stu- dents of his own vocal music department, but by all students and faculty in the Marion school system. Mr. Forsyth earned his Bachelor of Music Degree at Southwestern College and he received his Masters Degree from Wichita State University. As a member of the high school and elementary school faculty, Ken has organized many vocal groups including the Swing Singers, Advanced Choir and a number of smaller ensembles and glee clubs. He has directed a senior play and the musical My Fair Lady” among countless numbers of programs and concerts. In preparation for these events, Mr. Forsyth could be found doing everything from building sets, typing programs and making quick trips to Wichita for lights or music, to actually directing the production on opening night and taking the final bow for the many hours of practice and hard work. As a citizen of the community, Mr. Forsyth directs the Valley United Methodist Church Choir and teaches a Junior-High Sunday School class. As a witness for Christ, Mr. Forsyth shares his Christian love with all people he meets and knows. Marion High School and the community is indeed fortunate to have such a talented and self-giving man as Ken Forsyth. For these reasons and many others, the annual staff feels privileged to dedicate the 1969 Warrior of Marion High School to Mr. Kenneth Forsyth. 2 Foreword ... A cast of over sixty-five enthusias- tic music students under the direction of vocal music instructor, Mr. Kenneth Forsyth, entertained capacity crowds for their portrayal of the Broadway hit My Fair Lady on November 1 and 2. The musical comedy tells the en- chanting story of the transformation of Eliza Doolittle, a common flower girl into a real laydee, much to the an- guish of her father Alfred P. Doolittle, and much to the delight of her teacher, Professor Henry Higgins, the man she loves. After many lessons and trials, Eliza finally masters the new speech and she is ultimately passed off as a dutchess at the Embassy Ball. Many hours of practice plus the co- operation of the fine choruses and danc- ers helped to provide the atmosphere for the successful performances of My Fair Lady, which the cast as well as the community enjoyed. Professor Henry Higgins—Doug Westerhaus Colonel Pickering--Mike Steinel 15 Nancy Olsen Crowned ‘68 Homecoming Queen Many, many exuberant Warrior sup- porters turned out for the bonfire and pep rally held the night before the Homecoming game. The affair was sponsored by the Pep Club, with the band playing and the students singing and cheering. During the halftime of the Home- coming game against the Remington Broncos, Nancy Olsen, senior cheer- leader, was named 1968 Homecoming queen. Nancy was crowned by Steve May. senior football player. Jan Herrick, Student Council Secre- tary, andBevHoch, Eliza Doolittle, were the two other candidates. Following the game, students, fac- ulty, and alumni danced to the music of The Upside Dawn. As the ceremony began, the Pep Club members formed a candlelit pathway to the throne. In the final exciting moments, Mary Beth Kjellin was crowned 1969 Queen of Courts by Kaye Applegate, 1968 Queen of Courts. Mary Beth and her attendants reigned over the last half of an exciting game between the Victorious Warriors and the Centre Cougars. This year's theme-- Love Is Blue --was carried out at the dance which followed with beautiful decorations and music by the Basically Sound. The first signs of a new school year can be heard about two weeks before any other school activity, as the Marion High School Band begins its rehearsals in pre- paration for their many marching oppor- tunities in parades, as well as during the halftime of many football games. Throughout the rest of the school year, the band, under the direction of Mr. Conrad Steinel, seems to always be pre- paring for some performance, whether it be music contest, the league music festival conceit, KU Band Day, or one of the band's own concerts and for some reason usually seems to come out on the top. Senior trombone player, Doug Westerhaus is shown re- hearsing during a daily rehearsal. Band members were seen many times during the fall practicing for an upcoming parade or game. Seniors Depict Life Of Grand Fenwick The senior play. The Mouse that Roared was presented on March 28, 1969 by thirty cast members under the direction of Ken Forsyth. The Grand Duchy of Fenwick, world's smallest country, relies for existence on the export of wine to America. When it finds out that it is losing its market to a California imitation, it decides to declare war on the United States, with the idea of receiving sub- stantial economic aid handouts after it loses. Leading roles were portrayed by Roxie Hague, Bryce Ollenberger, Greg Bowers, Mike Steinel, and Doug Westerhaus. 26 Leading roles, Gene Bowers, Roxanne Hague. The event, planned and prepared by the juniors was held in the municipal auditorium. After the prom- enade, the students and faculty enjoyed a delicious dinner served by the sopho- mores appropriately attired as French waiters and waitresses. A highlight of the banquet was a speech by former principal Mr. James Weinmann. Special music was provided by Tabor College. Following the banquet, the prom was held with music by The New West. Everyone who attended the event agreed that the juniors displayed an extra amount of hard work to make the ban- quet and prom a success. Although the Marion Warriors of last year brought home the first place CVL trophy, with an 8-1 record, this year the Warriors refused to stop with anything less than the top. With a 9-0 record, the Marion Champs went out of their own class to take first place in the Double A. Tli rough-out the entire sea- son, whether it was the first game or the last, each and every member of the squad put forth his greatest effort by a great deal of practice and training in order to make every game more ex- citing than the last; however, if you were to ask any member of that mighty team, you would more than likely hear about the excitement they received when someone on the front line would hollar PFM. 32 Coach Dreier and Asst. Out of seven scheduled meets, the four-man team scored high for a sec ond place, a third place, and a fourth place in three meets. MHS and the com- munity are proud of this year’s golf team. Track Team Wins High State Honors Once again the muscles and speed of the Marion Warriors took this years track team to the top of many competi- tive events. Because of the effort and training of the fifty-three boys, coached by Rex Wilson, the entire team as well as many outstanding individuals rated high in the many meets. First place trophies went to the Marion team at the Council Grove invitational, the Haven invitational, the Fairfield invitational, the CVL, and the Regionals. The high- light of the season came when the Marion Warriors took the second place trophy at the state meet, missing first place by only one point. 37 Fruth Heads A Vigorous Physical New to the girl's extra-curric- ular activities this year was intra- murals. Because the Student Council, like any other organization, has a necessity for adequate funds, the members of Stuco sponsored such projects as pie throws on Old Settlers Day with a variety of gullible citizens as victims, and car bashes before football games with a supposedly tough opponent. In February, the Student Council started a new organization, composed of student council members from all schools in the Cottonwood Valley League. The organi- zation will carry on annual meetings as well as annual activities for the benefit of all schools involved. 43 Field Trips Highlight German Club Schedule ROW ONE: D. Kelsey, M. Leppke, R. For instance, in the early part of the year, all members of the German Club took a trip to the new Civic Center in Wichita where they saw the show Heidi. To follow along with tradition, the students once again or- ganized and carried out their annual German Club Christmas Party. This year, the club went to Wichita for dinner and a show afterwards. The Marion chapter of the Future Homemakers of America, under the leadership of Mrs. Pauline Ferrell, spon- sor, and Lucille Spencer, president, par- ticipated in an active way during the annual FHA Week, the Parent-Potluck, the Senior- 8th grade tea and the district and state FHA meetings. Also, the girls were enter- tained with many fine programs during the year. Perhaps the most popular program was the Dating Game. This year, too, the Marion chapter was very, very, proud of Mary Beth Kjellin for being elected to a state office. 47 Warriors Cheered To State Title By M.H.S. Pep Club OUTSIDE M LETT TO RIGHT: B.
