After much discussion and consideration, the Annual Staff has chosen a beloved faculty member. Mr. Conrad Steinel was graduated from Bethany College and received his Masters Degree from Wichita University. He taught for two years at Gaylord and nine years at Cawker City before coming to Marion in 1962. Mr. Steinel teaches both the Beginners' Band and the Junior High Band in the Marion Elementary. He is the conductor for the Marion High School concert band as well as the instructor of the marching band. Also many hours of hard work are spent by Mr. Steinel in preparing both the Pep Band and Dance Band for performances. Mr. Steinel not only spends school hours helping students, but he gives many private les- sons to squeaking clarinetists and sharp trumpeters. Mr. Conrad Steinel is know to every one at Marion High School. To him, for his friendliness, his warm personality, his never-ending patience, and his ceaseless efforts for us all, we proudly dedicate the 1966 Warrior. 4 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION MR. JACK M. The Seniors of 1966 have many memories from our years at Marion High School. Working to earn money to finance the Senior Sneak, the class experienced last minute troubles in raising funds for the trip; however we did manage to pull through in time. The memories of the class are many, some bad, but most are worth recalling. The seniors will always remember the tiring fun of building a float or giving a play. Not only the seniors will remember the dances with the Rogues and the Mad Hatters , but the entire student body of Marion High School. Something that time will never take away from us is the inspiration of such people as Miss Wymore, the talents of Miss Kruse, the understanding hand of Mr. Keenan and the wise words of Mr. Fleming. The Pep Club made themselves known during the entire football and basketball season, with the help of Mrs. Pat Jackson, sponsor, and Cheri Bell, Pep Club presi- dent. The girls were active throughout the school year with various projects; such as the Soup Suppers during football and bas- ketball, preparations for the homecomings, and picking up pop bottles. The most important ac- tivity of the Pep Club is to attend the games and help boost team spirit and moral, which they did unfailingly. PEP CLUB OFFICERS-Pres. -Cheri Bell, V. On February 8, ten FFA boys attended the District Crops and Poultry contest at Newton. Marion placed 2nd in the district crops contest in both A and B teams. There were nine teams entered. Nine boys journeyed to Manhattan for the State FFA convention. They entered teams in crops, parliamentary procedure, and farm mechanics. The main event of the year was held on May 5. It was the annual banquet in honor of the boy's parents. Many medals were presented to the boys at this time for their outstanding work during the past year. Two of the highest medals given were the Star Chapter Farmer award and the Star Greenhand award. These awards went to Chuck Seifert and David McGinness. This year the Marion FHA Chapter had a very rewarding and fun-filled year. Much praise for a successful year should go to the entire executive council, which was headed by Sharon Endres. A big Thanks” should also go to Mrs. Pauline Ferrell, the girls' sponsor and advisor. The FHA district meeting, held in McPherson on October 21, was well attended by many Marion FHA Chapter girls. Nine of our forty girls attending presented a musical interpretation of Toward New Horizons the FHA song. At this meeting the Marion Chapter received an Honor chapter award, which is indeed a great honor. March 27-April 12 was designated as National FHA Week. The Marion FHA used this week to make the community and school more aware of the activities, hard work, and fun the FHA participates in. The girls started the week a day early with a Slave Sale. Then on Sunday the FHA girls went to the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Monday was entitled Apple Day . Every teacher received an apple from the FHA. Promotion Day, March 29, found all FHA girls wearing promotion boosters. The last day, Good Deed Day , saw the girls in paint splattered overalls painting the fence surrounding the parking lot. The Student Council did a fine job this year in decorating our school for the Christmas holidays. Much planning and work went into the festive decora- tions of M.H.S. As another project the Student Council sponsored a student exchange with Hillsboro and Council Grove. This proved very beneficial to all the stu- dents involved. Special credit should go to the Student Council for a fine job of revi- sing the school constitution. The Student Council members were also responsible for the art exhibit in the lunchroom. As a special benefit to all students and teachers, the Student Council spon- sored several lyceum programs through out the year. The programs were enter- taining and helpful to all those who attended them. The Student Council deserves a big hand for the fine job done this past year. Through their efforts, M.H.S. is a much better high school than ever be- fore. The Student Council of Marion High School provides the channel through which the voice of the students may be heard. The entire newspaper staff deserves a big hand of congratulations for a job well done. Special credit should go to the editor, Cheri Bell, for doing a fine job of organizing and guiding her staff. Many thanks should also go to Miss Wichert, the newspaper's sponsor, for her time and patience in helping publish the newspaper. One special feature of the newspaper which attracted more attention and com- ments than any other was the Dear Daisy column. This column was a question and answer section; the Dear Abby of Marion High School. It held surprises throughout the year for its many readers. At the end of the year all newspaper subscribers waited anxiously for the answer to the biggest question of all. Who is Daisy? 40 ACTIVITIES BAND An Excellent Band Tear This year the band was kept very busy throughout the entire year with its many activities. The band participated in several parades throughout the state. Before school began, they marched in the Marion County Fair at Hillsboro and in the Labor Day parade at Florence. On September 25, the high school band marched in the Old Settlers Day parade held annually in Marion. Later in the fall they traveled to Hutch- inson to participate in the Kansas State Fair parade. Above all, the most exciting day for the entire band was October 9. While travel- ing to attend K.U. Band Day, the bus had a breakdown. They arrived right in the middle of the big K.U. football game. The band also attended an instrumental music clinic at Emporia on February 5, where they received some very beneficial information. As a final award for a years hard work, the band received a I rating at State Music Festival. ROW ONE- S. Lentz, M. Thompson, B. Elling, S. Yeagley. ROW TWO-J. Pankratz, M. Deines, S. Marler, N. This department is directed by Miss Jane Adams. The solos for the production were Mary Wester- haus, Judy Pankratz, Rodney Oelschlager, Toni McElwain, Beverly Hoch, and Helen Jackson. Another activity of the vocal depart- ment was the annual vocal clinic of the south half of the Cottonwood Valley League. This year it was held in the Hillsboro High School Auditorium. The highlight of the evening was the mass chorus, which was ably directed by Dr. Paul W. Wohlgemuth, the head of the music department at Tabor College. At State Music Festival held at Emporia on April 1-2, the vocal de- partment did a good job. Five I's and four II ratings were received as re- ward for the efforts of the entire group. A final presentation of the vocal music department was CAROUSEL, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Some of the lead roles were played by Judy Pankratz, Rod Oelschlager, Mary Westerhaus, and Wally Slusser. It was given on May 26 as a dramatic ending to a busy year for the vocal music depart- ment. Its setting is a New England farm. The story is one of tragedy. The old man, Silas, has once again come to the farm of Mary and Warren in search of work, but instead he dies in what he calls Home— the only home that he has ever known. The cast included Toni McElwain as Edna, Darold Longhofer as Silas, George Jackson as Warren, and LaVonda Hett as Mary. The time is September and as student's thoughts turn to school, many of the boys are thinking about one thing - football. As the first day of school begins, so does the huffing, puffing, sweating, and complete exhaustion of football. The Marion Warriors should be congratulated on a good year of football. Even when they lost many of their games, they never gave up. Everyone of the boys showed terrific sportsmanship, and they always had the drive to try harder at the next game. The boys played enthusiastically and they should be commended for a fine performance. The Marion Warriors had a tough sea- son even though they tried extremely hard. Although they had more losses than wins, they showed endless energy and determination. In the end, the Marion Warriors brought home a 2nd place trophy for their school in the dis- trict tournament, held in the Marion gym. The boys need to be praised for their fine spirit and will to keep trying. The A team was not the only team that had difficulties. The B team boys and the Freshmen also had their troubles. The determination and drive that all these boys showed far out weighed the many losses. Every boy showed excellent sportsmanship. With anticipation, everyone watched while Miss Neva Kelsey, the 1964-65 Football Queen, opened the envelope containing the queen's name. When the final mo- ment arrived, Judy Pankratz was crowned Football Homecoming Queen for 1965. The ceremony began as 20 future Marion High School students walked onto the court forming the path to the throne. Meanwhile, three pretty but quite nervous candidates, LaVonda Hett, Pat Warneke, and Toni McElwain were escorted to the court. Following the three girls and their escorts was Connie Jost, last year's queen. As the candidates waited with anxiety and the spectators watched in suspense, Queen Connie took the envelope containing the name of the 1966 queen. After reading the name of the queen, she placed the crown on Pat Warneke, 1966 Homecom- ing Queen. While the band played Sweet Heart of Sigma Chi, Queen Pat ascended to her throne, followed by her pretty attendants, and reigned over the varsity game. It is the hope of the Annual Staff that each of you will now have a book you can look at many years from now and recall memories of your happy high school days. Every high school year comes to an end, but the wonderful friends we have made, the good times we have shared, and the greater understanding we have gained will last us a life time. A new life lies ahead. It will hold fame and fortune for some, but disappointment and heartache for others. Let us all remember that we pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that we can do, or any kindness that we can show to any fellow creatures let us do it now. Let us not defer or neglect it, for we shall not pass this way again. As we approach the future we shall always remember the Senior Class motto, It's not how long you live, but how well. 65 ANNUAL STAFF Executive Council of the Annual Staff A School Annual is a great invention; The school gets all the fame, The printer gets all the money, And the staff gets all the blame.
