WARRIOR MARION HIGH SCHOOL MARION, KANSAS 1965 FOREWORD We have tried to capture the spirit of one year in this book. More than layouts, scripts, or prize photography, our annual must represent a variety of individuals. Individuals who are forming ideas and attitudes to base their lives on; as well as receiving knowledge and attaining maturity. We hope that we have recreated in each of your minds, some of the friendships, decisions, memorable activities, and even disappointments, which have particular meaning to you. Our 1965 MARION WARRIOR, is successful only if we produce for you--now and in the future the memories that represent your life at MHS. The Annual Staff chooses one person to dedicate their Annual to each year. Usually this person is a teacher or principal. We feel this person must also be active in civic affairs. The person we have chosen this year comes into contact with every individual in school, students and admin- istrators. To this person, the halls of Marion High are indeed familiar. As most of our days end at 3:40, his just begin. He does not get Saturday to rest either. He finds time to do any number of things, such as: fix a door knob, change burnt-out lights, set up risers, or help you put up campaign posters. He is a friend to the students and does his work cheer- fully. We would like to thank you for all the many years of service and time which you have given to our school. We dedicate to you, MR . HERB HETT, our 1965 MARION WARRIOR . DEDICATION 3 ADMINISTRATION MR. The cast included Carol Caselman as the Infanta, Linda McElwain as Dorthea, Dick Maggard as Le Bossu, Connie Jost as the Duchess, and Dennis Hett as Lord Severe. Infanta , which takes place during the Spanish Renaissance, is the story of the Infanta who falls in love with a hunchbacked dwarf. But the Infanta is forced to marry a French Lord who is cruel and interested only in materialistic things. Under the capable direction of Miss Irma Wymore the play received I rating at the State Contest. ... Bossu, speak to me, I do love you... ... I am the hideous creature of the forrest.. . As the first day of school opens, so does the football season. The boys start to get in shape for their warpath on the field. The Warriors showed great sportsmanship and ability. They learned how to accept defeat and tried harder at each football thriller. The boys played energetically and we can graduate them on well deserving and hard fought playing. 42 Gene Schimpf Larry Ensey THIRD ROW - Mgr. M. Wray, G. Schimpf, G. Jackson, B. Hoch, B. Post, J. And so begins the evening of May 1, 1965... The scene for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was set amid roses and candle- light, carrying out the theme of 'Ramblin' Rose'. First came the traditional pro- menade at the beginning of the long-awaited evening. After everyone had been seated, all relaxed for a delicious meal. For the program, the Junior Ensemble sang the theme song for the evening, 'Ramblin' Rose'. The speaker for the evening was Mr. Paul Flaming of North Platt, Nebraska, a former member of Marion High School's faculty. He gave an excellent talk and was genuinely enjoyed by every- one. The Squires of Salina provided music for the Prom, playing any and every type of music asked for. The evening was greatly enjoyed by both the faculty and the students. The Juniors are to be congratulated on giving the Seniors a beautiful memory of their last year at M. H. S. ... through the foliage-covered arch- way. .. .. . the head table, where the class officers and the speaker are seated.. .. . .. the evening was a success, with the help of members of the Sophomore class, who served at the Banquet and Prom. 47 “THE MIRACLE WORKER” These are glasses, Anne—glasses to protect your eyes from the hot sun. 'I love you, Helen—forever and ever. You can see five hundred years back in the light of words. Only the experiences of real life could create the powerful story dramatized in THE MIRACLE WORKER. It is the true story of Helen Keller, who as a six month old child suffered a disease which left her deaf and blind and thus eventually mute. Although her speaking mechanism was not impaired, she was unable to see or hear and thus was unaware of language and words. No one knows what her ultimate fate would have been had she not come under the care and tutelage of an Irish girl, Annie Sullivan, who was hired by Helen's agonized parents. THE MIRACLE WORKER is principally concerned with the Emotional relationship of the family and Annie. Little Helen, (Neva Kelsey) trapped in her own secret world, is bitter, violent, spoiled, and almost animal-like. Only Annie (Connie Jost) realized that there is a mind waiting to be rescued from that dark, tortured silence. If that mind can be reached, the world can be Helen's through the use of words, and she will be able to see five thousand years back in the light of words. Everything she knows, feels, and thinks may be shared through language. Not a soul is in darkness or lost even in the grave if we have words; for language is more to the mind than light is to the eye. --Annie Sullivan. After a lonely two weeks, the Kellers come to take Helen home. 48 “A MAN CALLED PETER” I'M sure everyone regrets Miss Bickle's hasty impluse. This job has been murder on my feet! Get Daddy his soda box--and quick! A Man Called Peter is the heart- warming story of a Scottish immigrant named Peter Marshall who rose to become Chaplain of the United States Senate. It had a rare combination of humor with a sincere message--that of faith in God and unselfish Christian charity. The play was presented to a full house on the evening of March 12, 1965. Miss Irma Wymore and Mr. Marlyn Friesen were directors, with Cheri Bell and Beth Thole as student directors. A lot can be said for these people and their efforts and it was greatly appreciated by the entire class, and especially by the members of the cast. Darold Longhofer did a fine job as Peter Marshall. Toni McElwain did equally as well in her role as Catherine Marshall. The other members of the cast included; Wally Slusser, George Jackson, LaVonda Hett, Suzanne Baily, Judy Pankratz, Carmen Hayen, Dennis Conyers, Blair Post, Dean Jost, Norman Bowers, Anita Van Buren, Pat Warneke, and Mary Westerhaus. Golly! You really look like an Arab! HOME COMING QUEEN In the chill of a lovely evening on October 23, 1964, the high school and the town watched the ceremonies of Homecoming. During the half time the three candidates came onto the field . Mary Konarik, last year queen, crowned Queen Neva Kelsey who was escorted by Larry Ensey. Her attendants were Connie Jost escorted by Gene Schimpf and Becky Berry escorted by Dick Maggard. The Warriors won the ballgame against Centre 33-12 to honor the queen and her attendants. Queen Neva reigned over the dance, Autumn Leaves , which was decorated in a beautiful fashion. We say congratualtions to these three girls. Queen Neva Kelsey 50 Becky Berry Connie Jost QUEEN OF COURTS On a lovely evening on January 15, 1965, the annual Queen of Courts ceremony took place between the games. The basketball boys chose Connie Jost who was royally es- corted to her throne, decorated in lovely orchid, by Gene Schimpf. Her attendants were Becky Berry escorted by Larry Ensey and Barbara Christensen escorted by Rich Soyez . The theme for the evening was Some Enchanted Evening. The Warriors won over Council Grove in a manner fit for a Queen. Queen Connie and her Attendants reigned over the annual dance following the game which carried out the theme. Congratulations to these three girls. Queen Connie Jost Barbara Christensen Becky Berry TEXOMA LODGE What are they up to, Gene? Eat, drink, and be merry These are our sponsors? The young man or woman who succeeds must have a will of iron to stand against pressure. For this reason the boy with no difficulties to overcome in his growing period does not develop his will. There are millions of young people all over the | country who have the native capacity and training for splendid futures, but they lack will power. They need that determination that knows no failure--the kind of' determination that keeps constantly at the task until it is fully executed. By sheer force of will many seemingly impossible things have been accom- plished with readiness and ease. Today's great need is the unconquerable will that laughs at the impossible and says, IT SHALL BE DONE. To will one thing today and something else tomorrow means failure. But the young man or woman who determines fully to do one thing and keeps at that one thing will likely succeed. By unwavering determination, ambition is realized. — Eleanor Roosevelt--- T. C.
