FINAL THOUGHTS...................55 ADVERTISEMENTS...................56 THE 1964 MARION HIGH WARRIOR FOREWORD As the routine of school life progresses, each student plans and sets his goals. By striving to meet these objectives he soon finds himself closer to graduation and the attainment of his diploma. He realizes that the attainment of his major goals has been made possible through the emphasis upon daily goals such as leadership, scholarship, and service to the school. Each of these has been gained through his classes, organizations, and the many events which have thus prepared him for service to his country and mankind. Realizing the importance of these goals, we have taken them as the theme of our yearbook. Through layout and copy we have attempted to present them. The Staff 4 DEDICATION MRS. PAT JACKSON Each year one teacher is chosen to dedicate the Marion High School Warrior to. This year we dedicate the yearbook to Mrs. Pat Jackson. She is M.H.S.'s physical education teacher. When President Kennedy's Physical Fittness Program was issued, she immediately began to help inforce it in Marion. She is not only ac- tive in the school but in the community and the church. Her face can be seen at athletic events, and music events, and dramatic events. Mrs. Jackson is one of Marions best representatives, she has made us proud of our physical education department and our school. 5 ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRATION MR. KENNETH HARTMAN - PRINCIPAL MR. This year Chris Hauser and Mary Konarik received these awards. MISS ERMA WYMORE F.H.A. The Marion High School F.H.A. Chapter has been very active in the 1964 school year. During the year they attended various state and district meetings. The chapter also did things around the school. At the beginning of the year the Mother-Daughter Tea was given. The activity for the Valentine season was a beautiful banquet. Students from K.S.T.C. presented the program. The final event the F.H.A. gave was the Senior-Eighth Grade Tea. This tea welcomes the eighth graders and congratulates the seniors. The Marion Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America has really been busy. CHEERLEADERS Being a high school cheerleader is not an easy job, but it was a rewarding one this year for M.H.S.'s nine cheer- leaders . These nine girls were fine representatives for our school, as they earned the friendship and respect of many other schools. Our cheerleaders attended cheerleading clinics at Law- rence and Wichita, where they learned new cheers and actions. The girls spent a lot of time and energy learning these new cheers and teaching them to the Pep Club. The Marion Warriors had a fine group of cheerleaders to cheer them on to victory and stand by them in defeat. No matter how cold the weather, during football season, the band performed at all the home games. The band spent many long hours practicing for their winter and spring concerts. Both were very well received by the public. The dance band performed for the Junior and Senior plays. The Pep band played for the pep rallies and home basketball games. The band can be proud of their ratings at both district and state contest. 37 F.F.A. OFFICERS PRESIDENT..........Richard Robertson The FFA began their year by attending a State FFA Leadership Camp at Rocksprings iast summer. They also attended a meat judg- ing school in Wichita, last summer. In October, the chapter went to the District Leadership School and Contest. They qualified to go to the State Contest. At State, they re- ceived second, among the 15 schools represent- ed. This year an outstanding part of their pro- gram was the speech contests. Every boy pre- pared one speech and gave it at the local speech contest. At the District Speech contest at Hutch- inson, they ranked gold emblem group in the (3) and (5) minute divisions. The highlight of the year was the Parent- Son Banquet. Medals were given to the outstand- ing chapter member. Mr. Sweat, the FFA ad- visor, was named, Honorary Chapter Farmer. This gave them pos- session of a tie with Herington for first place in the Cot- tonwood Valley League. During the season, the Warriors played six shut-out games over their opponents. The Warriors scored 218 points against their opponents to the 32 points that were scored on them by three teams. The victory over Hillsboro advanced the Warriors to 6th place in the state. This annual grudge battle” was felt by many to be the best game of the year. The Warriors had extra weight and aggressiveness in the line, combined with the offense in the backfield and the coaching, made 1963 a most successful football sea- son. She was escorted by Bob Leppke. Her attendants were Judy Broadstreet, who was escorted by Max Jackson, and Tina Holmes escorted by Maurice Williams. The band, formed a crown which the girls walked through , to create the atmosphere. The warriors defeated St. Xavier in a manner fit for a queen. Queen Mary reigned over the dance which was decorated in beautiful fall scenery. It was a Homecoming that will long be remembered by students of Marion High School. MARY KONARIK 46 JUDY BROADSTREET TINA HOLMES QUEEN OF COURTS On the evening of February 7, Marion High School's annual Queen of Courts ceremony was held during half- time. The basketball boys bestowed the honor of Queen upon Miss Judy Broad- street. Queen Judy was escorted by Dick Hamlin. Her lovely attentants were Miss Tina Holmes, escorted by Doug Bass, and Miss Connie Warneke, escorted by Max Jackson. The Queen and her royal attendants were the guests of honor at the Queen of Courts Dance held after the game. JUDY BROADSTREET 47 CONNIE WARNEKE TINA HOLMES OKLAHOMA! OKLAHOMA--Where the wind comes sweep- ing down the plain, and the waving wheat can sure smell sweet as the wind comes right behind the rain.” These words will be long remembered in the hearts of the Senior Class and all those who helped make this production a success. On November 22 and 23, 1963, the Senior Class of Marion High School presented the Rogers and Hammerstein's musical OKLAHOMA . After many long hours of hard work and rehearsal of lines the Seniors meet this great challenge. The play went on in spite of the great tragedy of the President's death. Under the very capable direction of Miss Irma Wymore and Miss Nadean Kruse, the romance of Curly and Laurie and the early days of Oklahoma unfolded. Now to the Seniors, only treasured memories re- main of these days. But now new challenges are to be met. CAST Ado Annie is promised to me. Poor Jud is dead. M. Reppart, C. Poppe, R. Swanson, D. She was a Jew and they were very perse- cuted. It is the story of the group of people who lived in hiding in a small area. This year the Junior Class presented this play. They did an excellent job. The entire play was en- joyed by a full house. This was the Juniors first dramatic adventure. Under the direction of Miss Wymore the play was done beautifully. The class worked very hard not only on acting, but on make-up, costuming and settings. Many of the people who had major roles in the play became Thespians at the end of the year. Anne passes out presents. The Franks are told there will soon be another man living with them. 49 It's going to be a long journey. Charles, Charles wake up. STOP IT! CONTEST PLAY The contest play was The Balcony Scene . The play tells the story of a man who died and then attended his own funeral. It illustrates the inner thoughts people have about their friends. The play had eight characters. The people were very simply named. Man, Wife, Daughter, Mother, Friend, Gang- ster, Girl, and Husband were the roles. The play was given for the public five times. Under the capable direction of Miss Irma Wymore the play got a I rating at State Contest. This was the high point for the cast after three months of practice. D. Hanschu, J. Magee, C. Hauser, T. The Juniors worked for many weeks planning for the last big event of the school year. The tables were decorated with small boats, flowers, and red sails. Four students sat at each table and the Presidents of the classes sat at the speakers table. Mr. Bill Cobb was the speaker. A mural was placed across one end of the room. It was an ocean scene with a boat that had red sails as the center attraction. The ceiling was lowered with light blue cheese cloth. The Prom was beautiful and everyone enjoyed the evening. The Juniors are to be congratulated on their fine job. 51 52 53 ANNUAL STAFF The students on this year's annual staff spent a great deal of time and energy in preparing the 1964 WARRIOR. A few of the duties of these people were; plan- ning page design, writing copy, taking pictures, selling yearbook subscriptions and advertising, and doing huge amounts of bookkeeping, typing, drawing, and copying. As students and faculty turn through the pages of this year's WARRIOR, we, the annual staff, hope that it brings back memories of a wonderful and exciting year at M .H.S. Yearbook Editor ...... If you like to win, and don't think you can, Its almost a cinch you won't. If you think you’ll lose, you're lost, For out in the world we find Success begins with a fellows will; It's all in the state of mind. Full many a race is lost Ere even a step is run, And many a coward fails, Ere even his work is begun. Think big and your deeds will grow, Think small and you'll fall behind; Think that you can and you will-- It's all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed; you are; You've got to think high and rise, You've got to be sure of yourself before You can even win a prize. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man; But, sooner or later, the man who wins, Is the fellow who thinks he can! 55 SAINT LUKE HOSPITAL MARION CREAMERY LOCKER FROZEN FOODS CO.
