Yearbook of MHS 1961 Marion, Kansas WARRIOR As we pause and review the past year, awe overcomes us as we think of the many memo- rable events—happy and sad—that have come our way in one year. We hope this 1961 WARRIOR will keep alive and fresh, these memories. Now will you join us, as we page through this WARRIOR and remember our year at MHS? FOREWORD Because of your understanding, your patience, and your warm smile, we wish to show our grat- itude and appreciation by dedicat- ing this, our 1961 WARRIOR, to you Jim Criswell. Under your capable direction the band has been an enriching ex- perience for hundreds of students at M.H.S. The band's activities have expanded until they now in- clude extensive trips to College Band Days, enjoyable concerts, precision marching, and the ever- popular 'Winter Spectacular.' The diversity of your enter- prises, your friendly easy-going manner, and your wonderful sense of humor will forever leave their mark in the memory of each and everyone of us at Marion High School. The years have flown, our memories are many, both bitter and sweet. Fond are our recollections of Jr. High parties and picnics; Senior High Banquets and plays. It is all over now, but we cannot be sorry, for the future beckons us on. We will remember you, M.H. S., and wish to every class that follows a high school experience as fruitful as ours. This poem is dedicated to the graduates of 1961 in the memory of Leonard Hoffman, who passed away May 22, 1958, during their freshman year at Marion High School, after he had undergone surgery for a brain tumor. We have dedicated this poem, not only to his memory, but with the thought that its truths might be remembered throughout their lives. Senior Memorial 19 Rockaway for Bust! Who dun' it? My diploma! Seniors, Do You Remember? Class of 1961 Salutatorian ROSALIE DOHNER On the eve of May 26, 1961 forty-seven Seniors reached the moment that they had anticipated for a long time, the beginning of their high school commencement. Many thoughts were thought that night, by those Seniors. . . . remembering the great time they had, only that week, at Rockaway Beach, those final exams, the seriousness of the baccalaureate address, when each seemed to realize life would never be quite so carefree again. But we have no regrets, as graduating .. , , . Seniors, we are going on to something Valedictorian eileen pavey better! The Student Council is composed of the most capable repre- sentatives from each class and club. Decisive matters, pertain- ing to the government of the student body are brought before the Council. This year we attended the Student Council Conference at Haven. Other outstanding projects were selling sweat shirts, sending a representative to a Student Council camp in Oklahoma, installing a coke machine to be used by the students, and award- ing honor pins to the honor students. The Student Council was headed by the following officers: Julie Wooldridge, President; Thad Meierhoff, Vice-President; Eileen Pavey, Secretary; Ron Oelschlager, Treasurer; Mr. Keely, our interested sponsor. Among them for this year of 1961 are: the second Sweetheart Banquet, a Mother-Daughter Tea, a prize - winning float, a successful ice cream social, an inter- pretation of the Lord's Prayer at District III FHA Meet- ing, a Senior-Eighth Grader Tea, a day for washing car windows downtown, an active and amusing basketball game, starring the girls and their fathers, plus many other activ- ities and interesting programs. Yes, this has been a splen- did year for FHA at MHS, and we're thankful to each person who helped make it so great! PRIZE FLOAT SWEETHEART BANQUET SENIOR TEA FHA 25 SWEETHEART BALL F F A The Future Farmers of America is an organization to aid the boys who take part in Vocational Agriculture. It helps to de- velop leadership and agriculture ability among its members. This year the activities of the FFA ranged from a float in the Old Settlers Pa- rade to their second annual Sweetheart Ball and the first Parent-Son Honor Banquet. This year, also, they had the honor of having Laddie Helmer represent their chapter as the State Farmer. 26 Hi-Y Science Club 27 President..............Eileen Pavey Vice-President .... Tuck Tucker Secretary-Treasurer................ Rosalie Dohner Student Council Rep. . . Jim Melton Throughout the year, Thespians has been a very active group. Under the ca- pable and very patient direction of Mrs. Ashley, the Thespian contest play, THE LAST CURTAIN, was taken to league, district, and state Festivals. Each character part was portrayed quite ex- pertly and therefore the play received a I rating at district and a II” rating at state Festival. After getting a I” on her informa- tive speech at district, Eileen Pavey went on to state and again received a I rating. Another activity of Thespians this year was the constructing of the scen- ery for the Senior play and the Winter Spectacular. We are all sorry that Mrs. Ashley will be leaving us next year. We sin- cerely want to wish her much good luck in the years to come. Thespians 28 Pep Club M-Club Golf FORE—No doubt this is an all-too-familiar call to the Marion Golf Team. 1961 has been a good year for the M.H.S. Tee Club. They have attended golf meets all over the state; they have also played host to meets on our home course. Among the honors our team received are: letters for the four man team, and one medalist. The four man team is Dick Varen- horst, Dale Bernhardt, Chris Hauser, and Jim Meisner. Dale Bernhardt won a medal this year. Good luck, team, next year! •) The 61 track season was a good one for our Warrior team, as they hosted the first Marion Invitational Track Meet, in which they came through to win over all their visiting teams. After receiving third place in the C.V.L., the Marion team leaped forward at the State Relays. As a result of these relays, Marion High School placed FIRST in the mile relay. We wish to congratulate the entire team for their sports- manship, stamina, strength, and stability. We're proud of YOU! Seniors Track 31 61 Gary Loveless Gerald Kelsey Jerry Loveless Nine Horsemen Who Will Be Missed 32 Football With the beginning of school comes also the beginning of the football season, which this year proved to be the start of an eventful and successful season. The team, in- cluding each and every member, deserves the glory they are apt to receive. After the ringing of the last bell each day, the boys stream across the school yard and into the gym to suit up in jerseys, spiked shoes and helmets. After getting out to the field, the distance which is usually run, the boys get loosened up with calisthenics. Following this, comes the skirmage, and then the practice game. First ones to the bus get to ride in, what a rush! Every Friday night, followed and encouraged by interested townspeople and fellow students, the Marion Warriors meet their opponents, to give them a taste of that 'ole Indian Spirit. This spirit, under the able coaching of Edward Frickey, has made a name for our town throughout the state. This year the Warriors suffered only one defeat, but the remainder of the games and their scores are something of which we are all proud. Very good season team! Congratulations. The Warriors in action! Basketball Our Warrior team made a fine record for itself this year. After receiving a rather glum 5th rating in the C.V.L. they went on to the Ellsworth Invita- tional Tournament, where they received first place. After Ellsworth, next on the agenda was the District Tournament held at Buhler. Here again the Warriors came out on top, after an excitement filled, and well- played game against Hillsboro. Placing first at Dis- trict they were able to go on to the Regionals, which Marion hosted. At the Regionals the Warriors took second place, after one glorious victory and a hard- fought second game. We, on the staff, wish to extend our sincere con- gratulations to the boys who participated in basketball. Also, congratulations to the basketball coaches who trained and developed a fine team, our team! 35 Patty Longhofer Homecoming Tressie Miles On a chill November eve many football fans saw Miss Tressie Miles crowned Home- coming Queen, 1961” by John Christensen, during an im- pressive half time ceremony. Her lovely attendants were Miss Patty Longhofer, escorted by John Russell, and Miss Donna Jost, escorted by Jerry Domke. The Queen and her attendants reigned at the Home- coming Dance following the game. Donna Jost During the valentine season, the students of Marion High School chose as their Sweetheart” Miss Donna Jost. Donna was crowned by Tim Williams to be our Queen of Courts, 1961. Her attractive attend- ants were Pam Hamlin es- corted by John Christensen, Karen Higgins escorted by Jerry Schwemmer, Deanna Klenda escorted by Rocky Hett, and Marianne Waltner escorted by Don Druse. Queen of Courts Marianne Waltner, Deanna Klenda, Donna Jost, Tressie Miles, Julie Wooldridge. Leading the pep section this year, was a fine group of girls. These girls not only had plenty of school and team spirit, but the type of personality and ability we were proud to have represent our school. Under their leadership, the school learned several new cheers and songs. Behind the snappy actions, precision movements, and perfect coordination lies many hours of practice. With this practice comes sore backs and legs, the discovery of new muscles, and all over weariness. Congratulations girls, on a job well done! Judy Broadstreet, Pam Hamlin, Donna Hanschu Cheerleaders g ! M H W 'O. K. , Band . High School The Marion High School Band has many accomplishments tucked under their plumes. One which probably goes unnoticed is its appearances at the home foot- ball games. It always begins with the National Anthem and continues to encourage the team throughout the game, with peppy victory songs, and half time perform- ances. Some of the annual accomplishments seem to be: County Fair, State Fair, Old Settlers Day, at least one concert, Winter Spectacular, Memorial Day, and of course District and State Music Contests. During the year, instrumental music at MHS is augmented by the participation of such groups as Pep Band and Dance Band, and during the contest season en- sembles and solos prevail. This year the high-ranking individuals were: Deanna Klenda, Donna Hanschu, Rosalie Dohner, Anita Schlehuber, and Dale Bernhardt. Thus first hour of each school day, for all band members, is just One Big Blast after another. Band 41 LEFT TO RIGHT: Julie Wooldridge, Diane Henderson, Deanna Klenda, Karen Jost, Anita Schlehuber, Patty Longhofer, Donna Jost, Jean Morse, Karen Schlesener, Judy Broadstreet. Mixed Ensemble JULIE WOOLDRIDGE Accompanist Triple Trio Perhaps if you would have entered one of the practice rooms on Tuesday or Thurs- day, you would have seen these girls, sit- ting in a semi-circle, harmonizing as well as any nine girls could. The experience of performing has been helpful to the girls, and they have enjoyed the compliments given to them. This en- semble sang at several churches, at the Winter Spectacular, for civil groups, for the Vocal Clinic, at the annual Honor Ban- quet, received a I rating at contest, and the final performance was at the Junior- Senior Banquet, where the girls sang a medley of tunes appropriate to the formal air. We will remember these times of musical enchantment, but most of all we will remember our director, agent pub- licity manager, choreographer, and music arranger, Miss Kruse. Thank you, Miss Kruse, for everything; Triple Trio was the greatest! For Boys Glee this year, Mr. Jim Criswell, the director, had the largest number enrolled in several years. The group met twice a week, and through music learned another activity to be enjoyed. Boys Glee Girls glee, under the capable direction of Miss Nadean Kruse has done a fine job this year. Approximately 75 girls were enrolled in glee club. For the second consecutive year the girls glee has received a one rating at District Contest held at KSTC at Emporia. The girls glee sang at Baccalaureate and to the ears of one of the teachers it hasn't sounded better in years. Girls Glee 43 The Carolers The 4th Winter Spectacular was held at the City Auditorium on Decem- ber 22. Christmas music provided by the high school band, under the direc- tion of Mr. Jim Criswell, added an air of gaiety. Vocal numbers, directed by Nadean Kruse, were provided by the Mixed Ensemble, Triple Trio, and a girls chorus consisting of the triple trio and freshmen girls. Coached by Mrs. Ashley; Jim Meisner presented a dramatic read- ing The Christmas Story. As always before the Winter Spec- tacular was a great success, and we are looking forward to many in the future. Fun at the Christmas Party. Characters from Nutcracker Suite. A wintery Sleigh Ride. Winter Spectacular 44 George ’ Slept Here 45 My Jeanie, with the light brown hair. Come on Jeanie, tell me, who is he? This year the contest play that was presented was entitled The Last Curtain. The play was presented by the Thespians, under the leadership of Mrs. Janice Ashley and Mr. Richard Brodhead to whom we feel indebted. Both spent many tiring hours working with the cast and their parts, the staging, the lighting, costuming, and the make-up. As in any successful play there must be much back-stage work. This was done by the Thespians, who took care of the make-up, who borrowed the period furniture, who managed the technical features of the play, and who assisted in every way possible. But even with good direction and able back-stage Thespians this play would not have rated a I, except for the talented cast. It consisted of: Julie Wooldridge, as Jeanie; Jim Melton, as John Wilkes Booth; Janet Stiller, Patty Longhofer, and Tuck Tucker, as actres- ses and actor, and Jerry Schwemmer, in a memorable role of Peanut John, the backstage handy-man in the play. All together, these many efforts produced The Last Curtain. The Last Curtain” 46 A Rhapsody In Blue The Juniors this year entertained the Seniors and faculty with a luscious meal and a delightful program. The entertainment for the prom was a modern combo which was appreciated and enjoyed by all. Even though the atmosphere was Blue” a good time was had by everyone who attended.
