The new Court House now stands a little South of the site of the old County and School building. The first school was taught in the new building by J. N. Rogers in 1868. In the Spring of 1872 School District No. 1 having disposed of its interests in the old County and School Building. to the County voted S5 000.00 to build a new schoolhouse on the hill. The School Board at that time was composed of: J. N. Rogers director' Frank Doster clerk George Griflith treasurer. The contract for the building of this schoolhouse was let to Sam T. Howe and S. B. Tubbs. The building, was completed in 1873. An ad- dition was built in 1889 to the old school building on the hill, and built North of and adjoining the old building, so now both buildings form the present High School building. fs rex- . ,CQAMSQ , I ef Q f 'K I 1. This has resulted in a broadening of the standard for the edu- cation of women. Woman is not satisfied with a training which de- velops only the intellect. In addition to this the new education gives attention to the physical, esthetic, social, domestic, economic and spirit- ual development. The result has been an organization of Home Eco- nomics Department in many schools and colleges. In the Marion High School this work is divided into two divisions. The Domestic Science Course includes a study of the laws of health and sanitationg the wise expenditure of money and timeg and the scientific principles underlying the selection and preparation of food. The Do- mestic Art Course gives instruction in plain sewing. The work in mending and caring for old garments and the cutting, fitting and mak- ing of new garments is accompanied by a course in textiles which em- phasizes the properties of various fibers in relation to care, cleaning and laundering. 4 i 1 -2 5 f..,- Il i in U ',iv - if Q ii Lili fr ,, ,1i X, V f . . Those Four Years Happy are the people w hose annals 'ue brief Quch is true of cl isses as well and since our class has been a happy one the historv of our stru rgles and hardships our honors and achievements in those four years will be brief Our class started the up grade of the high chool hill in Qeptember of 1910 We were not afraid of the thrcc classes ahead of us nor the largest cla s that had ever begun this Journey in the whole history of the Marion High School Perhaps the fact that strength lies in num beis had something to do with our couragc or perhaps it was the fact that we were now a class made up of thosc who had strength enough to trawl thus far Some of us had gone to school all of our lives in Marion eithei on the hill or in the vallev some of us had come from other tow ns and some had come in from the countrv to share their lot with the class ot 14 Magical number' IJUlll'l2'll'l tt first year its brilliance shining' over the hard path ahead of us fixed many ambitions and shaped many ie solves The title Qophomore had hardly made itself accustomed to our ears until the year had passed and we entered into the third lap of the course Behind the cloud which enveloped our endeavors to uphold th honor and dignity of our High School during our Iunior year we can catch the gleam of the silver lining as we look back upon it from the pinnacle of our Senior year. Now we are at the top of the lill now wc have finished the journey begun with so many misgivings and fear.. Behind us lie those four years which have been so prosperous 'md happy. Years in which we have done our best to raise high the banner of our belox ed school and keep it free from blot or stain. Years in which we when occasion call- ed have stepped to the front and taken our places with our fellow workers in bringing Marion High qchool to the position she occupies among the High Schools of the State in athletics literary works and general school activities. Then turning a broader xista lies before us higher hills are seen than that on which we stand. Their paths and by-ways hidden by a kind encircling mist. Life tints the east with pink and, to the west past sorrowings grow dim like constellations when the sun is up. Life lies before us and with a faith unquenched by fear misfortunes or defeat we separate and say All s well the race is on. bod speed. ff nf, A X- -fx fx- ' at v isor 1 . This note was from some other girl so she thought. Following its diseovery she at once applied for a divorce. ln the course of the trial many of their old elassmates who are in xarious walks of lift are brought hack to testify. At la, t 'ill the witnesses are examined and it seems that poor Julius is guilty of this outrageous crime. The judge gives him a life sentence when a loud noise is heard at the door and Geo. Crist comes running in and testifies that he was the one who wrote the note which cause d all the trouble. LU ff, 5 C' AND X9 4 L B L UE That Wichita Trip One time the Football Team of th High School of Marion Journey' d south to engage in battle with their enemy Wichita and there also went with them mam lox al ton nsmen to cheer them on to victorv The team arriving the day before the boys wandered over the city looking with wonder at the large buildings and the great crowds that yy alked the streets At last at an early hour thev turned their weary footstcp to b d with tender thoughts of the old bed at home and won Morning broke early that next morning andere the sun had risen out the tops of the buildings some of the bovs who were In the habit of rising at an earlv hour were out on the streets taking' in the sights After lnfaltfast th y were allowed to roam at will over the streets for several hours and then they were put to bed to sleep until time for the game And Indeed they did sleep for the excitement of the city was too much for their sy stems as they had always been accustomed to the quiet and tranquil life of MHTIOH At Z o tlotk thev went to the field for the game and aoout 5 o clock they returned What passed Vtlthlll that space of time is seldom ut tered in the pre. ence of any of those boys and he who does not know need never to know. But by the sad and forlorn looks of the boys and townsmen twuth the exception of some of the loyal ones who had pre- pared themuelves for defeatj it could be easily seen that something sad had happened. That nigh' the boys wandered aimlessly about town waiting for the train that woull carry them back to their happy homes again. When the traii did ct me it was indeed a homesick and weary group of Marion- ites that got aboard. But wht n they arrived at home a crowd of over a hundred loyal sur porters that hadn t the time and money to take the trip were at the train to greet them and console them in their defeat. That night when the boys weary and sick at he art laid themselves to rest they felt that after all it vsasn t half so had because they knew at last that the town was for thtm in defeat as well as wictory.
