Baker University M. A. Columbia Ed. D. University of Southern California This above all - to thine own self be true.. The advise of Polonius to his son is sound Class of 1952: , You entered kindergarten on September 5, 1939, together with 39,954 other Iowa youngsters. A recent study shows that almost half of these have already dropped out of school, or will drop out before grad- uation. We trust you will never regret hav- ing graduated from Marion High School, and that you will continue your education wheth- er in college or out. C. B. Vernon Superintendent even today. Dishonesty, even though tech- nically legal in some cases, lies behind many of the ills of the world. We hear it said that our country, as well as the world, is in need of a leader who is able to unite the ef- forts of all people in the search for higher standards of living, national unity and po- litical security, to free all people of want. But too few of us realize that a return to real honesty would remedy many of these faults. It is the hope of your school that the sev- eral years that you spent here will have shown you the value of absolute honesty, sincerity and a faith in Him who holds our destiny ..... And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. J. F. Swartzendruber Principal 6 J. F. Swartzendruber Marion, Iowa B. A. MOTTO The future is not in the hands of fate, but in ours. CLASS FLOWER Lilac CLASS COLORS Lavender and Silver VALE Our school days are over-our lessons are conned- We've fastened the latch of a strong friendship bond. We'll never forget classes, parties and plays In which we found blame, but more often praise. With many a problem we all were involvedg To the teachers we went and our problems were solved. We've passed with success the assigned tribulations Required by the teachers before graduation. We go forth in life, and, tho leaving our friends, We've confidence and hope in all future trends. And so, good friends, from the seniors to you Here's a farewell from - the Class of '52. Lorraine Franklin Scene I. CLASS HISTORY Setting: Marion High School Act I-1948-49 This colossal four-act play opens in the fall of 1948 with a cast of 84 playing the role of the freshman class for that first big day. While getting used to being fright- ened freshmen, we cast Margaret Evans as president, Mary Ann Kepros as vice-pres- ident, and Wilma Techau, secretary-treasurer, all under the direction of Miss Mentzer. Scene II. In athletics our freshman-sophomore squad mowed 'em down and won the little Scene III. Scene I. WaMaC conference title with the trophy. Amid initiations, studying, and tests, we enabled all the high school to trip the light fantastic at our dances. This year we contributed two candidates for the Home- coming pageant. The queen's freshman attendants were Joanne Andrews and Ger- trude Armstrong. Act II-1949-1950 This was the year we, as sophomores, moved out on the open stage and left the cubby-holes backstage to the new freshmen. Under the guidance of Mr. Waltmire, our class chose the production staff: Margaret Evans, president, James Hayes, vice-president, and Marilyn LeClere, secretary-treasurer. Scene II. Coached by Mr. McLeod, .our freshman-sophomore basketball squad won the little WaMaC conference title in an exceedingly good season. We really wowed 'eml Scene III. For our Homecoming queen attendants this year, we selected Margaret Evans and Scene Scene I. Marilyn LeClere. And overcome by success of our sophomore year We celebrated its close with a class party. Act III-1950-1951 This was the year of excitement! We, the juniors, were finally playing the cher- ished roles of upper classmen. Ernest Cates headed the cast as president, with James Hayes Cvice-presidentj and Mary Ann Kepros Csecretary-treasurer! playing supporting roles. II. Class rings were ordered early in the year, and a few exchanged hands when they finally came late in November. The juniors chose the MacArthur style-with no bloodshed during the voting. Scene III. Homecoming this year saw two of our prettiest junior girls acting as attendants to Scene IV. Queen Richman. They were Joanne Andrews and Arlene Kroening. The junior class play, directed by Miss Margaret Doty, was The Late Christo- pher Bean. All our practicing as play-actors paid off as Ernest Cates, Arlene Kroening, Margaret Evans and Roberta Schnell played leading roles in our master production. 21 Scene V. Scene Scene I. Scene II. Scene III. Scene IV. Svene V. Scene VI. Scene VII 22 The Marion Basketball Team topped the year by bringing home the WaMaC Title -jwith Seeks, Leffingwell and Hayes in the spot-light. We even found ourselves run- ning to Iowa City for tournament games. VI. This was the year of shorter skirts Cballet styleh and the Prom! The Prom! Some of us who worked the hardest with all our pixies and squirrels felt a little pixilated and nutty ourselves by the big evening. But it was worth it! That's one stage setting that really clicked. Act IV-1951-1952 We, as seniors, faced our try-outs as high school students and all received a part in one last big act. For our leaders we selected Bob Liebe for president, Arlene Kroen- ing for vice-president, and Margaret Evans as Secretary-treasurer. The intrepid Mr. Nau assumed the role of class sponsor. Homecoming! And what a homecoming! Parades, arrests , coffins, mourners, court trials,-we'll never forget iem. We tied the game! Our gal Joyce was Queen with Joanne Andrews and Marilyn LeClere as senior attendants. Russ Seeks crown- ed her at the dance-and a happy homecoming became a memory. Our talented muscle-men kept Marion on the map. Russ Seeks, as football captain, headed a stalwart team that got us a good tie Cand trophyl for WaMaC champions. Our basketball team garnered another WaMaC trophy for the hall case. Our cross- country squad brought us the Class B Championship, Another production became reality when our Quill rolled off the presses. With Arlene Kroening and Ruth Roberts as co-editors and Miss Frankenfield and Mrs. Deeds as faculty pushers , most of us contributed time and talent to committees- writing copy, gathering pictures, selling ads and subscriptions for the book. Our the- atrical ability became evident in the planning, production, and participation in the Quill Benefit. Lest you think that all was work-we had fun as well. Remember the hayrack party? The Big Ten? The Prom? The Class Trip? No Senior will forget those gala occasions! Lest you think that all was fun-we worked as well in scholarship and service. With representatives on the honor roll we also applauded our leaders by electing seven more seniors on the National Honor Society in which Betty Ann De Jong, Don Hay, Arlene Kroening, Hugh Leffingwell had already attained membership as juniors. And again we won honors at the state music contests. With May, came a final flurry of activity before the curtain rang down-the play, the class night program. baccalaureate, the alumni dinner, and finally graduation- when we left the school for the last time with our diplomas tucked unde I' OUI' 31'H'1S. l fx- Z X i- F if 1 ga , 1 ' '-My i 11 W-. ,-, I Q gg 5, ff, l I ' : 1 Q 2, - ' i f -y 42 V, 5 p L? ff I 7 . 5 f ,5 -1, ' X ?' Some of the activities have been giving concerts last summerg presenting two concerts during the school year, playing at the Radio Free Europe demonstrations, the Corn Festival, and Memorial Day ceremonies, participating in the Band Clinic, playing and marching at football games, and playing at basketball games. Because of Marion's many instrumental solos and small groups, the Ensemble Club was put on an active basis. This club has done much to encourage the band members to play solos and to form small groups, as membership is determined by participation in such events. Several new classes have been organized by Mr. Wright, including a theory class and a recital class. The Band Council has been fairly active. They have endorsed many new members for the senior band and have helped Mr. Wright with band problems. The officers of the Band Council are Don Hay, president, Jerry Brown, manager: and Karen Vikdal, secretary-treasurer. Representatives on the council are Ruth Horner, Mari- lyn Rech, Betsey Wachal and Doris Eckhart. Last spring at contest the band, two soloists lMarjorie Lala, Nancy Millerb, and the B-flat clarinet trio fJohn Kassler, Leota Hay and Frieda Nesetrill won first. OC L MUSIC The featured event of the vocal music department this year was the Christmas program in which the Mixed Chorus, supported by both Girls' Glee Clubs and the Boys' Glee Club, sang a number of selections, including the Hallelujah Chorus . On March 7 the vocal department presented a musical assembly for the high school. The small groups sang at various meetings of local clubs throughout the school year. Groups attending contest last year were Boys' Quartet, Madrigal, Girls' Sextette, Girls' Trio, Mixed- Quartet, Boys' Glee Club, Girls' Glee Club and Mixed Chorus. There were sixteen soloists including Betty Ann DeJong, Valeta Hanson, Elva Jean Peick, Marilyn LeClere, Joyce Whitmore, Bill Lundquist, David McCal1ey and Ernest Cates. Last year's winners at State Contest were Boys' Glee Club, Girls' Glee Club and the Mixed Chorus. This year the Mixed Chorus elected the following officers: President, David McCalleyg Vice-President, Larry Morningstar, Secretary-Treasurer, Jeannine Murray, Librarian, Bill Lundquist, Attendance Monitor, Marilyn LeClere. The Chorus Council included Jeanne Emmons, Betty Ann DeJong, Joan Petrusch, Nadine Manson, Bob Christensen, Jerry Peck, David Carey and Russell Seeks. The Indians had eight returning lettermen for the 51 season. These were Captain Russ Seeks, Dick Bristol, Carl Tipton, Kenny J ordan, Marvin Novotny, Hugh Leffingwell, Norman Nielson and Harry Oakley. With four victories, a tie with Tipton and a loss to Vinton, the Indians were able to share the WaMaC championship with Vinton. Much credit is due to the rugged line, which had that fighting spirit that gave our backfield support when they most needed it. The prospect for a winning team next year is bright. Returning letter- men who will be comprising some of the team will be Captain Jerry Peck, Marvin Novotny, Harry Oakley, Jim Lang, Ralph Stimson, Charles Cox and Dave Carey. Marion will undoubtedly boast a good line again next year with several veterans in the forward wall. With as good a line as we had this year, speed in the backfield and a lot of spirit typical of Marion, next year's team should be one to be proud of. 51 FRESHMAN FOOTBALL VARSITY FOOTBALL RECORD Conference Record Season Record ......... The 1951-52 edition of the Marion Indians was one of the greatest in the history of the school. Besides being the champions of the YVaMaC Conference for the fifth consecutive year, the Indians came out victorious in the Sectional, District, and Sub-state elimination tourneys and advanced to the quarter-finals of the State finals before being eliminated by Keokuk, who became the runners-up in the finals. The Indians went through their first thirteen games before being defeated by Tipton 34- 46. This loss was later avenged 60-44 on the Marion floor. The Indians then went through eleven more games before the loss to Keokuk. All this added up to a fine 24-2 record for the year. Hugh Leffingwell was announced as honorary basketball captain and also was chosen as forward on the IDPA All-State team. OPHO ORE BA KETBALL Mr. McLeod's sophomores went undefeated for the second year in a row, coming out victorious in eighteen straight contests. This makes forty consecutive wins for Mr. Mc- Leod's cohorts. Regulars of this year's team were Wally DeWoody, Tom Domer, Everett Scott, Dan Kellams, and Bob Fox. In the District the Indians trounced Monticello for the third time this year and then defeated Immaculate Conception of Cedar Rapids for the fifth year in a row. After the District, which was held at Coe College in Cedar Rap- ids, the Indians advanced to the Sub-state, which took place in the Iowa fieldhouse at Iowa City. There they defeated Ottumwa Central Catholic and Tipton. In the big tournament, the State finals, the Indians beat Ogden before bowing out to Keokuk in the quarter-finals. News tidbits: Margaret Evan's changing classes left only two girls in the seventh hour govern- ment class, Roberta Schnell created quite a furor with her swollen face. The teachers are happy -they're free from us for Thanksgiving vacation! DECEMBER Dear Diary-We're growing mellow with the season-carols are beautiful and gifts have been pouring in all month! Basketball is here-and Hughie has one eye on the basket and one on that C. R. girl. The student-faculty volley ball game gave us thrills--with the faculty winning. Can you imagine? The Christmas program by the glee club had a different touch with the Mixed Chorus' formation of a Christmas tree. We hear that the biology classes have disected their first victims, after naming them-must be a reason somewhere. The Christmas dance was fun-Santa Claus and mistletoe and all. Happy New Year! JANUARY Dear Diary-The New Year is here-and already most of our resolutions have been broken. We had a glorious Quill Benefit Show January 22-so we can afford fancy covers for the book. We've been having good times-a cheerleader-sponsored roller-skating party-a Leap Year Dance, where Marj Secrest and Gary Robison won prizes as the best-dressed bums-a play day at Mt. Vernon for the G. A. A. We're still rolling along in the winter sport of basketball. The vocal department has given us a fine program of music. FEBRUARY Dear Diary-We're taking time out from drooling over those divine valentines to add this month's news. The student council and Hi-Y produced assemblies-that Platner may turn into another Groucho Marx. The teachers had a chili supper, rumored cooked by the men-good bus- iness in bicarbonates at local drug stores! We had a dressed-up dance-didn't recognize some of our old pals! The dramatic club put on a thriller of a play-was that villain fplayed by Careyl a rotter! The Hi-Y had a play night in the gym-main event being a basket ball game between country and city boys-which the country won. We romped over Maquoketa 83-49 to win the WaMaC basketball champion ship for the fifth consecutive time. The G. A. A. girls have started their good grooming program with a style show. MARCH Dear Diary--Sure and it's St. Pat's month-and we're all waiting for spring lonly the weather isn't cooperatingl. Sixty-six students made this year's honor roll, and seven seniors and four juniors gained an added honor by being elected to the National Honor Society. After prac- ticing their debates in senior English classes, our debaters have attended the Iowa Forensic meet for this district in C. R. We've been busy going to tournament games-it's been exciting --even the pep assembly where the cheerleaders got bussed by Coach Hipple. We're really proud of our team-made it to the state quarter finals. Hughie has been named all-state for- ward. Of course we almost lost Stark because of the tournament-he started for Iowa City and wound up in Coggon! We have fifteen firsts in our small music groups at preliminary contests. APRIL Dear Diary-Spring fever has us in its clutches. We've had some good assemblies-all coming at once.We went slightly long hair with David Copperfield in two installments and the Grinnell Girls' Glee Club in addition to other assemblies on Liquid Air, Teenicide, and Alcohol and Ath- letics. The Hi-Y entertained us with a carnival-remember the Can-Can and the Centrifugal Cent ? Won't our Big Ten Ball be remembered for a long time, too? The G. A. A. deserves much credit for hard work to give us such a memorable occasion. The juniors were missed one day when they journeyed to Cornell College forCareer Day-mighty quiet without Oakley. More music contests remind us that spring is really here. 64 MAY Dear Dia . e eac ers are all that keep us going-and the excitement of graduation! We seniors were wondering how we could cram baccalaureate, commencement, class night, class trip, senior class play, honor assembly, and the prom into such a short time. But we have just about made it-that old diploma is really worth working for. Our play, Out of the Frying Pan, came off on schedule. For a while neither Mr. Peterson nor the rest of us thought it could -thanks, Mr. Peterson. And as long as we are in the mood-thanks to all the faculty and the best of luck to you underclassmen. It's been fun knowing you, M. H. S., and you've given us many wonderful memories. Marilyn LeClere ' Robert Stark ry-CYawn!J That spring fever' Pep talks from th t h ' '52 Cl-.RSS SONG B, D.
