Page I6 CLASS HISTORY Two years oT hisTory are included in The Marion High School curriculum, one year oT world hisTory, and one year oT American his- Tory. However, There is anoTher hisTory in our high school ThaT is acTually being wriTTen aT This Time: each chapTer of which represenTs one year's acTiviTies. The laTesT chapTer of This hisTory is iusT being concluded by The class of I935 and is enTiTled OUR NEW DEAL. For This sTory we musT go back Tour years. ThaT Tall Two imporTanT Things happened: a group oT 68 sTudenTs, laTer To be known as The class oT '35, enTered This school, and a new adminisTraTor appeared aT The head oT The school wiTh a N. R. A. reform. Mr. Delber+ J. Pugh insTi- gaTed The NEW RULING ARRANGEMENT. and under ThaT code Mrs. Bragg was desig- naTed adminisTraTor of The Treshman class. As soon as we were well seTTled down, we elecTed our class officers. They were Wyoma Carey, president Donovan Goodyear, vice- presidenT: Billy Reed, secreTary: and Lois Lockwood, Treasurer. On OcTober 30, we Turned ouT in The gym Tor The all high school dance and reTurned February I9 Tor a hard Time parTy all oT our own. Our class early made several achievemenTs. Billy Reed was The Tirsl' member ol: The class To receive a leTTer when he played The re- quired number oT innings in baseball. RoberT Munsen proved The abiliTy of The Freshman class when he placed TirsT in The home dec- lamaTion conTesT. Ralph Hawk, RoberT Mun- sen, ano MargareT Ross represenTed The class in debaTe. The members oT The class who were chosen To go To The STaTe Academic MeeT were Alice Wallace, RoberT Munsen, and Ralph Hawk: RoberT Munsen placed TirsT in general science, and Alice Wallace placed second in English correcTness. So we close The TirsT chapTer oT our hisTory. The second chapTer began in The Tall of I932. In SepTember we gaThered again un- der The guiding hand oT Miss Rummens, our sophomore adminisTraTor. AT class elecTion Joseph Burrows was elecTed presidenT: Don Goodyear, vice-presidenT: RoberT Widger. secreTary: and RuTh Murphey, Treasurer. The principal social evenTs oT The year were The all high school dance in OcTober, The sophomore dance in December, and The sophomore-Tresh- man parfy in February. This yeah we were represenTed by ArminTa Davidson in debaTe. RoberT Munsen, Armin- Ta Davidson, Edward FerreTer, and Alice Wal- lace parTicipaTed in The home declamaTion conTesT. Those winning Trips To The sTaTe academic conTesT were Anna Helen MarTin, JeanneTTe TiTus, and MargareT Albaugh. Mar- gareT Albaugh placed sevenTh in world his- Tory. ln The laT'rer parT of May we adjourned Tor The summer To meeT again The nexT Tall as luniors. We sTarT our Third chapTer as we have The oThers in The Tall. We assembled under Miss lla Anfhony and Miss Vera Wood, and Tound Mr. Pugh's NEW RULING ARRANGEMENT really geTTing under way. School opened This year aT eighT-ThirTy, and The day was To be divided info six periods oT one hour each and a TwenTy minuTe home room period. As soon as we became accusTomed To The changes we elecTed RoberT Munsen, presidenTq Billy Campbell, vice-presidenT: KenneTh PoTTer, secreTaryg and Lois Lockwood, Treasurer. On OcTober 5, we all wenT To ShaeTTer's Park Tor a Weiner roasf. Early in November we sTarTed work on our class play, AS THE CLOCK STRIKES, which was presenTed December I7, and I8. On March I7, we inviTed The seniors To our class dance and made a big success oT The evening. The climax of all social evenTs Thus Tar in high school Tor us was The junior- senior banqueT, held in The O. O. F. Hall. The achievemenTs This year were many. RoberT Widger and Waldo Johnson were added To The M Club. ArminTa Davidson and Edward FerreTer placed TirsT in The home declamaTion conTesT and Then placed TirsT in The sTaTe preliminaries. We were well repre- senTed This year in The STaTe Academic MeeT. Alice Wallace. RoberT Munsen, MargareT Al- baugh, Jeanne Slife, and Anna Helen MarTin all parTicipaTed. Alice Wallace placed TirsT in English correcTness: RoberT Munsen placed TirsT in biology: Jeanne SliTe received ninTh in American liTeraTure: and MargareT Albaugh placed TifTh in American hisTory. Perhaps The N. R. A. wasn'T so bad aTTer all.
