Who is the person whose support almost always guarantees success? This is the person that the staff of the 1987-88 yearbook would like to dedicate this year's NOIRAM to - Mrs. Helen Fleegel. Her interest in our school and our community is very apparent in the number of activities she's involved in. Her enthusiasm and willingness to give of herself and her time always insures that a project will be done well. Mrs. Fleegel was born and raised in Marion on a farm on White Road. She is the oldest of two children, her brother is Dr. Thomas Stevens. She graduated from Marion High School in 1956 as senior class valedictorian. ln 1960 she graduated from Nazareth College where she re- ceived both her B.S. and her M.S. ,ge 11? There seems to be no end to the activities in school and in our community in which Mrs. Fleegel is involved. She is the church organist at St. Gregory's where she also teaches religious education. She is the advisor of the National Honor Society which operates the school store. She was involved in student council, has directed numerous senior plays, and has been a senior trip chaperon several years. She was also advisor to the Yorker's Club. She is very involved in the annual penny fund and has helped with the Marching Band pizza sales. Mrs. Fleegel has played a key role in the success of many school organizations. Mrs. Fleegel now resides on Witherden Road with her husband Barrie and two daughters, Tracy and MaryBeth. The senior class of 1988 would like to thank you, Mrs. Fleegel, for all that you have done for the students of Marion High School, and we would like to wish you and your family much happiness in the future. This was a scary time for all of us. Most of us ' didn't know anyone, and it was difficult being away from home all day. However, it wasn't long before we began to adjust and make new friends. Many of us were quick to establish our identities. Tammy Noble loved to talk loudly and a lot, Carl Adriaansen was the biggest eater the cleaned his tray every dayl, and at 38 inches, Dick Marchionda was the shortest, but the toughest. We all loved play time, especially Mike Wilson. He played in the sink all day fit wasn't even a play areal. Art Keenan remembered everyone's name except Mrs. Albertson's. He spent the entire year calling her Mr.,' We took three field trips during the year. We went to Mr. Reynold's theater to see Snow White, to the circus in Rochester, and to the Seneca Park Zoo. In January, Paul Frizelle became a member of our class. We were all very happy to make it to first grade and no longer be the little squirts of the school. Some highlights of the year were the field trip to Genessee County Museum and an end of the year picnic at Forman Park. In November, we were joined by Beth Casey. In second grade, we were joined by many new students throughout the year. They were: Bryony Dickinson, Julie Flack, Vicki Martin, Dan Steurrys, Melissa Dickinson, Maureen Naught- on, and David Derck. Miss Sorenson's class put on the play Bambi , starring Mike Swift as Bambi, Lisa Gardner as Bambi's mother, Art Keenan as Thumper, Carl Adriaansen as the Old Wind, and Ken DeLyser as the blue jay. Tom Cunningham once told his class, Last night we ate Chinese food and used CHOP- STICKS. During the year we visited the Apple Shed and had a class picnic at the Marion Town Park. In third grade, we all had some characteristic by which we could be identified. Heidi Levan was famous for her deer feet and pickled pig heart, Kathy Bliek had the deepest dimples, Maggie Perry was the biggest storyteller, and Dan Steurrys and Charlie Almy were tied for the biggest excuse maker. Deb Weeks was the slowpoke of her class, and Matt Steppenbeck's first welcome to Miss Smith was, I think I'm in love. Lisa Gardner was forever worrying, What if I don't finish? Just suppose I don't, what then? You mean I can't get my report card if I don't finish? The big event of the year was when David Derck was hit by a car, and we were all glad that he was all right. We finished the year with a picnic at Forman Park. Fourth grade brought forth yet another star in our class - Matt Stappenbeck won first prize for his Mother of the Year essay. He got to read it on television one Sunday afternoon, Many of us also joined the band for the first time this year. The beauty of May was marred by the accidental death of one of our classmates, Andy Stevens. This was a hard time for all, but we all pulled together and got past it. We will always remember Andy's smile and friendly nature. We miss him a lot. Our trip for the year was to the Rochester Science Museum. We were all happy to rejoin our friends again in fifth grade. Many of us developed nicknames this year - Matt Fultz was Fuzzf' Mark Vandenbeckens was Bark, and David Habermehl was Habby. King Kong Kamens got his name when he tore the pencil sharpener from Mr. Sholly's wall one day. Our field trip was to the Cummings Nature Center where we attended a program about pioneer life. In sixth grade, we were finally the seniors of the elementary school. A highlight of the year was the sock hop, featuring Dave Kamens as the disc jockey. In the spring, we all participated in Field Days. Many of us won blue ribbons for the first time. At the end of the year, we began a new tradition by being the first class to participate in Sixth Grade Graduation. During the year, we were joined by Dan Diesti and Tom Thompson. 6 7944: It was back to being the little squirts again when we reached seventh grade. Most of us had fears about being shut in our lockers, not finding our classrooms, or getting whirlies'l -- be we all survived. With a few pushes from Mrs. Fleegel, we were able to astonish the upperclassmen by becoming the champions of the Penny Fund. Although we missed recess, we enjoyed the many seventh period activities available to us, and we thought it was great to be able to sit wherever we wanted to in the cafeteria. Our class project for the year was the garbage pickup. By eighth grade, we had all forgotten about ever being in elementary school. We enjoyed teasing the new seventh graders and torturing them in some of the ways we had been. We began yet another tradition this year with Eighth Grade Recognition Night. Our fund raiser for the year was the eighth grade supper. As freshmen, we had a lot of good times. This was the first year we were able to take part in planning what courses we wanted to take. Many of us took advantage of this by taking foreign languages or other elective courses. Our class project for the year was the Kadet stationery sale. Tenth grade brought forth many experiences for us. Those of us who took biology will never forget some of the traumatic experiences we had in there Cdissecting fetal pigs, turtles, etc. as well as having to stab our own fingers to check our blood typesj. All of us participated in putting on our class project for the year - the sophomore supper. Most of us remember eleventh grade well. Many of us had fears of not passing the Regents exams at the end of the year, just as Mr. Henrie had ensured us we wouldn't. We also had college entrance exams to prepare for. Some of us began attending VoPro for part of the day. We had a group of German students attend our school in the spring. Many of us were able to develop new friendships as well as learn about life in a different country. We sold candy bars as a class project this year. Our senior year has been one that will long be remembered by all of us. We began the year with the senior booth at the Wayne County Fair. We were lucky to be the first class to use the new booth. We set a new record for being the highest sellers ever during our magazine drive. Many of us participated in Senior Switch Day. We had fun being teachers, principals, secretaries, and custodians for the day. Our senior play, Terror in the Suburbs, was directed by Mrs. Fleegel. We all had fun participating in it. Once again this year we were the champions of the Penny Fund. The theme was A Biker's Christmas. Our senior dinner dance was held on March fifth at Marvin's Country Club in Macedon. In between all of these activities, we were busy handing out senior pictures, choosing our graduation colors and announcements, and planning for our futures. Our senior trip was held in March. We went to Washington, D.C. and New York City. We still have many things to look forward to this year. The prom will be held on May fourteenth at Penelope's in Newark. The theme will be The World is Ours Tonight, featuring the theme song Feelings of Forever. We will be having French students visit our school this spring. We look forward to meeting them. We also have our class picnic to look forward to, as well as many more good times spent with friends. Graduation will be in June, and there will be a class party at the Webster YMCA directly following it. It will seem odd for us to finally be the ones receiving our diplomas, just as we have watched our friends do in the past. We will each go our separate ways in June, but the many memories and friendships we have made here at Marion Central will never be forgotten. Good luck to everyone in their future years! He has been living with Roger and Joy Baize and their daughter Wendy. Mathias is from Umea, Sweden, and he is 16 years old. His hobbies are squash, tennis, golf, skiing and drawing. We all enjoyed having Mathias here and getting to know him. We wish him the best of luck in the future. From April 5, 1987 until April 16, 1987, twelve Marion families hosted German students. Host students were Rich Henrie, Scott Schreiber, Judy Wessie, Jon Lammers, Alex Wells, Jay Cooney, Mike Swift, Regan DeHaan, Tracy Fleegel, Kathy Bliek, Chad Furguson, and Tammy Noble. During their ten day visit to Marion, the stu- dents attended regular classes and participated in many school events. Their itinerary included such things as a welcome reception sponsored by the Board of Education, a Student Council dance from 98WPXY, a visit to the Wayne County Historical Museum, a Red Wings baseball game, a day trip to Niagara Falls, and a two day stay in New York City before leaving for Germany. It was an enjoyable experience for us all to have them here, and we wish them the best of luck. lb. ss' 1. 9 5 D-YDS . s S ' . s..-F 'O Q u. s . '. or IS 9 ' u . Q D Q ' s 0' . The loss of Lisa DeMay will be felt in '88 but with everyone else back we hope to improve. The team worked hard in practice and it paid off in another good year in the county and at sectionals. Sectionals this year were at Geneseo. This year's Bill White Award winner was Debbie Weeks, our most improved was Tracy Kamens, and our hardest worker was Denise Stritzel. The boys varsity soccer team consisted of eleven seniors, eight juniors and one sophomore. We began our season by winning our own tournament for the third year running, by defeating Naples in a shoot-out thriller. The team suffered some serious early injuries which unfortunately sidelined some of the key players which gave opportunity to underclassmen to see a lot of time under game conditions. The team scored fifty-three goals offensively and allowed twenty-nine. Junior Jerry Newby led all scorers with nine followed by Rich Becker with eight, Stoney Hall seven and co-captain Tom Hunter six. Fourteen different players scored for the team this year. Our defense was anchored by senior Co-Captain Carl Andriaanseng goaltenders Dave Kamens and Alex Wells shared responsibility in the nets. We had four players win all-county honors - Tom Hunter lattackerl, Carl Adriaansen fdefenderi, Jerry Newby and Chris Miller. Although graduation is taking some fine players, the outlook for next year is very bright. Mr. Bailey has a great nucleus of sophomores who will be working for roles on the varsity next fall. I would like to extend my appreciation to Mr. Fleegel and Mr. Owens for their support this year, Miss Taber and our cheerleaders along with the student body and faculty for all their encouragement throughout the season. However, when the season began we not only lost our three highest scorers to graduation, we also lost three more starting wrestlers to injuries in fall sports. This left a team of inexperience and once again, we had an uphill battle to develop a competitive team in a very tough league. This inexperience showed in our first match against Newark which we lost 35-21. However, the team didn't quit. By Christmas they were 2-3 on the win loss column. Realizing there was a lot to learn, the boys worked extra hard to improve their skills. Also at this time a few boys started to emerge as team leaders. This was definitely needed at this point. By the end of the season this young team iwhich didn,t have one seniorl ended up with a 7-7 record. This was a fantastic accomplishment for a varsity team of six Juniors, four Sophomores, and two Freshmen. The team also finished 6th in the sectionals with one sectional champion, Jeff Beiter. YEARBOOK ADVISORS Sheila Cooney, Virginia Devoogt. We, the staff of the 1988 NOIRAM, would like to thank our advisors Mrs. Sheila Cooney and Mrs. Virginia DeVoogt. Throughout this year both have lent support, advice, ideas, and encouragement to all of us involved in creating our yearbook. At times we came up against problems that we thought were bigger than us, but Mrs. Cooney and Mrs. DeVoogt were always there to help us work out a problem. We thank both of you, Mrs. Cooney and Mrs. DeVoogt, for all of your help, support, and under- standing throughout the year. We couldn't have done it without you. Best wishes in future years. We'll miss you. 119 ' M s: -1 , ' f -' V' , 3: k:5 ,k,,5, 13 ,,-,-- ,5,:f, gs,, 1ff:-W: f i .Mk-....!'sn My ,,,, -'IF' 5 MM., 8 aw 'la if 9 ,fi ' , .W .. f.
