Mr. DeRue lives on Dormedy Hill Road with his wife Barbara and his two children, Audrey and Grant. He became Town Assessor in Ianuary of 1971. For over twenty years he has been an active member of Rotary Club: he is a former president and is currently secretary. Playing league softball has been a pleasure of his for many years. Mr. DeRue, the class of 1987 would like to thank you sincerely for all that you have done for our class and all that you continue to do for the students of Marion Central School. Love, Iulie Bliek Co-Editor-in-Chief Mr. Paul DeRue It is with great pride and appreciation that we dedicate our 1987 NOIRAM to Mr. Paul DeRue, our teacher and friend. Mr. DeRue was born and raised in Sodus. He is the oldest of eleven children. He was active in high school playing basketball for the Sodus Cherrytowners. He also played baseball and was a member of NHS. After Mr. DeRue graduated in 1960 from Sodus, he entered Cortland University, where he received a B.S. in mathematics. Later he attended classes in Brockport where he received an M.S. in 1970. Mr. DeRue began teaching at Marion in 1964. The list of Mr. DeRue's activities seems to be endless: coaching baseball, basketball, soccer, and track: advisor of the many senior classes and their magazine sales, sole coordinator of the senior fair booth, coordinator of faculty coffee fund: chief supervisor at soccer games, official of junior high basketball games: announcer and scorekeeper at basketball gamesya member of several faculty committees: and senior trip chaperone. It's apparent that Mr. DeRue's vocabulary doesn't include the word No. Mr. DeRue became subject area coordinator for the junior-senior high school math department in 1978. He was chosen by the I IE. Qi When I must leave you for a little while, Please go on bravely with a gallant smile And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same - Spend not your life in empty days But fill each working hour in useful ways Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer, And I in tum will comfort you And hold you near. Helen Steiner Rice XX-77 ICJRS Q Fla--ls FURCW PIE. 91.3 .1' .13 Jul As we sort through the pieces of our class's history, we find many special times. Kindergarten started with 125 little kids entering the big elemen- tary school. We were all really scared - being away from our parents for such a long day. Kim Pfromm was so scared that the principal had to coax her off the bus. Kim Baker made paper hearts and arm stickers for everyone in Mrs. Albertson's class. We all had our special moments this year. In February, we saw the Shrine Circus. Kristin Lehr found it hard to sit down, she made several trips to the bathroom. Our first year was a busy one. In ad- dition to the circus , we put on several plays and visited the zoo. When we retumed the next year for first grade, we knew what was going on. Several members of our class put on the play The Littlest Angel. Andy Boerman was always competing to be first in line. When Iill Garlipp was quiet, she was really quiet, but when she talked, she really talkedlll Sheila Iohnson was usually quiet, but always smiling. Always anxious for show and tell were Paul Adriaansen and Sue Morgan. Michelle Salisbury OFFICERS 1 Pres. -- A. BSit9l', Treas. - H. This year was highlighted by our various bicentennial events. We made two covered wagons, dressed in our bicentennial costumes, and paraded from room to room. At the end of the year, some of us went to Loew's Theatre in Pittsford to see Peter Rabbit. The memorable times continued into second grade. Lori Schoonerman was quoted as saying I don't know why, but Michael Bulkley keeps asking me to chase him outside. In the fall we visited The Apple Shed, where we watched cider being made. Steve Diehl brought his banjo to school one day and played it for his class. Ieff Henrie won a trophy for Iunior Wrestling. Known for being the fastest runner as well as the poem-memorizer was Anthony Bonetti. Kathleen McMahon and Peggy Mooney were known for being the most ladylike. Iim Mack helped the firemen show us the proper way to hold a fire hose nozzle. It was a year filled with lots of fun, hard work, and real good friends! Third grade was the year for field trips. Some classes visited the Rochester Museum and saw the Mr. Energy Show while other classes visited the Planetarium. Iackie Leno and Lonni LaFave were the champs of the Readathon. Lisa DeMay was the science expeg on polliwogs. Bill Seppeler was known for his creative dreams while behind the file cabinetzgl 'Star WarsfEak was Dean Amslery We finished our year with a picnic at Forman Park in Pultneyville. 'FTW' l' F ' F 'i' Fourth grade was a year for drama. Mrs. Dixon's class put on the play Tom Sawyer's Treasure Hunt with Tom played by Terry Ihrman, Huck by David Adams, Becky by Iennifer Miller, Aunt Polly by Iulie Bliek, Mrs. Harper by Kim Drake, Injun Ioe by Ken Gallivan, and Amy Lawrence by Tammy VanLare. Her class also put on The Toothache Mystery. Lori DeLyser, Margaret Mousso, and Missy Rice had their own boy watching club. Our trip to the museum was cut short because school closed early due to a snowstorm. It was another busy and productive year. forever and the theme song was 1Naver-say- Nb aiting for with both anticipation and anxiety if. When we became fifth graders, we changed classrooms for every subject. In English, we had several action-packed games of Jeopardy and also gave speeches. Mr. Wolfanger's class had several boys vs. girls spelling bees. The girls destroyed the boys with a record of 23-l-1 for the year. This year we par- ticipated in Field Days. Our end of the year party was at the Town Park. We finally reached the sixth grade. We were the big kids of the school. Our year began with an election for president of the class. The two political sides were the Stars and the Stripes. Frank Horton visited our school to congratulate Mike Bulkley on becoming president of the sixth grade. Some of us had fun working in the elementary school store. Towards the end of the year, we had the Spring Fl- ing. Many of us were awarded titles Qsome remain with us this yearj. We finished the year with our sixth grade graduation. When we entered the seventh grade, we reclaimed the honor of being the youngest in the building. We have fond memories of Swish-n-Spit. This year, our class project was the Trash Pick-Up. Some of us realized the penalty for having a squirt bottle in school. It was a very busy year as seventh graders. In Science class, we dissected our first frogs. We entered the eighth grade thankful that we were no longer the youngest in the school. The eighth grade turkey dinner was our class project this year. Many of us served food, sold tickets, or made posters for it. As ninth graders, we appreciated being allowed to choose some of the classes we wanted to be in. In math class we listened to Mr. DeRue's comy jokes. Our class project this year was selling Kadet Sta- tionery. Most of us were introduced to the dreaded Regents exams at the end of the year. Some of us even participated on IV sports teams. In tenth grade, the subject causing the most concem was biology. We rarely had a dull moment in biology lab: just love those frogs and pigsl The Sophomore Supper was our fund-raising activity this year. Eleventh grade brought the realization that we had one year left after this one. In Mr. Henrie's class, we compiled our own resumes and were constantly told we would fail the Social Studies Regents. In English with Mr. Rehor, we leamed about the correct pronunciation and spelling of words. Miss Brown's homeroom is remembered for getting the most office slips requiring students to report to the office after announcements. We sold candy bars this year for our class project. Finally, we became seniors. We were the big- gest kids in the school now. We had many fund raisers during this year. The activities began with the Senior booth at the Wayne County Fair. Selling magazines was our next big fundraiser. Henrietta the Eighth, a romantic comedy, was the title of the senior play. In March, the Senior Dinner Dance was held at Marvin's Country Club. Our senior trip in April provided us with great memories of New York City and Washington, D.C. The theme of the prom held at the Sunrise Hill Inn was Together Goodbye by Bon Iovi. And finally, what We've all - graduation. All of the pieces of the years before will hopefully be coming together now to form a solid foundation for the years ahead. Good luck to all of the seniors! We started the season slowly, partly because we had only seven people return from last year's section 5 class C championship team. This year our team had 23 members. We all hated that word Mr. Tilling would call us. PUPPIES ? Well we proved him wrong by winning our last three meets, taking the Wayne County class C championship. At sectionals we finished third just 10 points out of first. We had four first place finishes: 1600 relay fLisa DeMay, Carrie Kilinski, Audrey DeRue, Deb Weeksj and two more wins for Deb Weeks the 400H and 400M open, and the 3200 relay ILisa DeMay, Iill Garlipp, Audrey DeRue, Deb Weeksj. Also getting places were Lisa DeMay fifth in the 8007 Iane DeWandel fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 2007 Becky Iackson third in the discus, Iean Schermerhorn fourth l00h. Kim McClellan placed second in the Penthathlon. We hope to do even better next season. SENIORS - Row 1: I. DeWandel. Row 2: I. Schermerhom, A. DeRue. Row 3: B. Iackson. The i986 edition of the Orange Express finished the season as undefeated Wayne County overall cham- pions. With a perfect record of 8 and 0 the Knights were ranked in the top l5 schools in Section 5 by the Democrat Chronicle. Four school records were set in 1986 and one tied. 'I'he team averaged 99.3 points per meet during the season. We were very ably led by l 1 seniors. Lost to graduation were Todd Note, Mike Withey, Ron Spect, Pat Hall, Ieff Lammers, Steve Iohnson, Keith Martin, Dennis Moon, Scott Roegiers, Tim Habecker, and Mark Lee. These seniors only lost 3 league meets in 4 years of competition and had a combined 32-6 overall 4 year record. They will be missed. Mark Lee was our leading scorer with 124 points on I8 first places. He set the MCS high jump record at 6'4 and was the Class 8 sectional champion. Mark received the Bill White Memorial Award for l986 as our most valuable player. Also on awards night, Tim Habecker, a 5-time letter winner was presented with the Alan Bushart Memorial Award for his outstanding career and leadership. The team was not all seniors, however, and many underclassmen retuming for 1987 have thoughts of their own about retaining the county title. Returning for 1987 in distances are Mike Vallier, Rob Spina, Mike Swift, and Ieff Henrle. Ion Lammers. Ken Delyser, Doug Hicks. Dave Delfisher, Ken Gallivan, Iay Cooney, and many others should have something to say about where the trophy goes next year. The team ended its season with a second place finish at the sectional meet at Brockport. We scored a school high 93 points only to be runner up to a very strong Cal Mum team. Walt'll next year. The 1986 edition of Black Knight Baseball compiled a 7 win-9 loss record. However, for the second conservative year Marion gained the Class B Division title, as they were beaten only once by B teams. Iunior Dan Wilson was the team's leading hitter as he ripped at a .429 clip, and struck out just one time in 37 at bats. Dan rotated as a pitcher, first baseman, and played the outfield. Special recognition also goes to Steve Brown who stepped in after missing his junior year due to an il- lness and did an excellent job of catching all 18 games this season. Another junior, Anthony Bones Bonetti, hit an impressive .333 played at 3rd base, short stop, or in the outfield and stole an impressive 16 bases in 16 attempts. Rob Sherow led the pit- chers with 4 wins, 2 losses, most K's and threw the fewest base on balls. Marion was honored by having three players named to Wayne County All-Star Znd team, Roman Brozoski at 3rd base, Rob Sherow - infield, and Dan Wilson - outfield. The 1986 Bill White Award winner, the team player voted most valuable player by his team mates, was Roman Brozoski. Roman led the team in number of hits, in RBl's and in doubles f5l. He slapped 2 home rims and batted .327 while pitching 2 wins and 2 losses. Section V play saw a first round win, before a extremely disappointing loss to Lyons, a team Marion had defeated twice previously. Seniors, you'll be missed and not easily forgotten. 4. Two of the wins were in the Marion Tipoff Tournament and that Championship Trophy will be a permanent reminder of your effort. Personal honors are bestowed on two of our seniors. Lori DeLyser was selected to the Wayne County All-Star Second Team, and Tammy VanLare was selected to the First Team and also as an alternate to the McDonald's Exceptional Senior Game. With seven veterans returning next season and the addition of several promising I.V. players, the prospect for the year looks bright. Our best wishes to the three graduating seniors. She came to Marion in the late 1950's as an elementary teacher. She married a fellow teacher, Mr. Carl Miller, and stopped teaching for a few years to raise her children, Nancy, Barry, and Shirley. She re-entered our faculty in the mid-sixties, first as a substitute and then as a full time English Teacher. She has taught many hundreds of students the ins and outs of English grammar: who can ever forget their first contact with William Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet? Mrs. Miller has also been involved in many extra-curricular activities to benefit students. She has chaired the scholarship carnival. She has also been co-advisor of National Honor Society for 10 years, involved in such activities as the Penny Fund and Spook House at the camival. She has been involved in Senior Plays and has been solely responsible for the 9th grade fund- raiser, the stationery sale. Mrs. Miller has assisted in the planning of many social activities for staff and retired teachers. Mrs. Miller has been president of the MTA and has been very active in that organization. She has also worked on the development of new pro- grams in the English Department, as well as be- ing very involved in the Effective Teaching Program. We appreciate Mrs. Miller's involvement in our school's life, and we wish her a very happy retirement! PSYCHOLOGIST SPEECH CAFETERIA Elementary Psychologist: Irene Hansen D. McManus Supervisor: S.
