A fire in their home claimed the life of Mrs. Judith DeGelIeke, and severely injured a man held so dearly to many of us. What most of us did not realize was that never again would we walk down the halls of Marion to see the familiar scruffy beard and lovable pot-belly. Never again would I be kidded about all the money his wife spent at the darn hairdresser's. Twelve days after that terrible Saturday morning, Mr. DeGelleke left us to join his wife in what we wish to be their eternal happiness. This tragedy has deeply touched each of us in a different way, yet the community has come together to create a lasting memory. The DeGelleke Memorial Scholarship fund has been established, and the Wayne County tennis coaches developed the John DeGelleke Sportsmanship Award, which was awarded to the Marion team this past season. Mr. DeGelleke taught at MCS for 23 years, and served as advisor to Student Council, Ski Club, coach for boys' and girls' tennis, and was chairman of the Social Studies Department. Getting used to his absence has not been easy. Mr. DeGelleke, though you are no longer here with us, we hope that somehow you know that your presence is still felt. Your life was not without meaningg it is only unfortunate that others will not be able to know the Mr. DeGelleke we grew to love and respect. Lisa Schoonerman, Editor-in-Chief ,111 Appreciation Mr. Thompson - In just five years, you have created a concert band, marching band, and jazz ensemble which have made us and the community very proud. Thank you for all of your time, effort, enthusiasm, and most of all, patience. We love you, Mr.T!! Mr Reynolds You always have asmile anda joke to make us feel bet ter even on our bad days The interest and enthusiasm you have shown have helped to brighten our school days Mrs Cuvelier Both in words and actions you have continued to let us know that you care Thank you so much for all of your support throughout these past years 31 nn! gg 4 ll! 5 I 5.--'I ,..f ,LJ --I S.-I gk il Q ' ' 'fn SENIDIQS AR - W V X I , Q4 X i j K x 5 ' X I I ' V! Fires - Sec., C. Irvine - Treas. In the fall of 1972, we, the class of 1985, started our first day of school. lt was a very dif- ferent experience being away from our mothers for so long, but some of the luxuries of home were still present, such as lunch served promptly at twelve and a long time provided for us to take our naps, even though we were often too excited and nervous to even think of sleeping. Some of the highlights of our first year in school were: our trip to Mr. Reynolds' theater to see the film Dumbo, a trip to Rochester to see the circus, and a visit to the Seneca Park Zoo at the end of our year. When we moved to first grade, we were joined by Amy Garlipp. The excitement ofthe year was going to the planetarium and joining the second graders for a picnic at Forman Park. As second graders we received the privilege of switching classes and learned how to write using cursive. This year we were joined by Amy Nielsen, Kim Becker, and Sue Bird. ln third grade our favorite science lessons were about dinosaurs. Dave Hubright found a dead bird to enrich our bird unit, but Mrs. Hartfiel made him leave it outside. During the year we had many visits from Mrs. Newton's hamsters. At the end of the year one of our most ex- citing events was the Bicentennial Parade. We all dressed up as famous revolutionary characters. On the last week of school, we had a big third and fourth grade picnic. This year we were joined by Beth Luetchford and Chris DeGelleke. For fourth grade, we were introduced to band and musical instruments. During our last week of school, moving day struck! We had to move all the junk from our homerooms to different rooms. And the year ended with a picnic at Forman Park. This year we were joined by Scott and Tracee Holmes. In fifth grade we always looked forward to Mr. Wolfanger's class with all of the fun games of Gumball and Jeopardy We will also never forget all of Mr. DeMay's many lectures. We were joined by Hannah Naughton in May who only got to share our rainy fifth grade pic- nic with us. jj , We had our first experience as Seniors during sixth grade. We really thought that we were somethin'. Some of the special events ofthe year were Mr. Worthington's science labs, Mrs. McKane's eraser throwing habits, and a fifties sock hop. But the biggest event of all was our graduation from Elementary School. Goodbye paradise. l-lello reality! After moving to seventh grade we were presented with a lot of new problems. One of our most common, being infamous for seventh graders, was looking up. The class project for this year was selling posters and T-shirts, and we raised 3600. Moving on to eighth grade was an event that we all looked forward to. No longer were we the little kids of the school. We still continued our junior high life with excitement. Our class project this year was the infamous eighth grade supper from which we raised 358384. In ninth grade we were allowed a little more freedom, and we had some say in the classes that we wanted to take. Many of us at that age were still very naive towards life. Our class project this year was selling Kadet Stationery. Our top salesperson was Valerie Miller who sold forty-six items. Our total profit was 31,138.66 ln tenth grade, biology provided us with a lot of interesting activities, such as our fieldtrips to our mousetraps and our stream communities, plus dissecting our very own fetal pigs. This year the Marion Marching Band was able to go to The Gorham Pageant of Bands where we won two second place prizes due to Mr. Thompson's unrelenting patience and our long hours of practice. This year's class project was the tenth grade supper, and we made 3600. We entered eleventh grade with the normal junior fear of failing the social studies and English regents. Even though Mr. Henrie preached on hour after hour that we were the most unprepared class that he's ever seen and our knowledge of current events was pitiful, most of us had no problem in making him eat his words. Chemistry was another highlight of our junior year that many of us think we could have done just fine without. This year's class project was selling chocolate candy bars and we made 31,000. In our final and last year of the high school experience, our year was concentrated on fund raisers for our senior trip. Our first was the senior booth at the Wayne County Fair at Palmyra where we raised 33,000. Next on the list was the magazine and newspaper sale where we raised 35,700. The Senior Play, The Prime Time Crime, raked in 31,200 and the spaghetti supper brought in 3300. We had our senior dinner dance at Marvin's Country Club on March second. The theme of our senior prom was inspiration by Chicago, and our senior picnic was at Darien Lake. Now that all the fun is over, the Publications Club would like to wish every member of the senior class the best of luck always. And to the class of '86, may your senior year be as great as ours was. . . Neal Guthrie and The Publications Club Advisors - J. Ramsey, J. Reinhardt, T. Quill vw 2, 3. 4: 2,21 T: SRX Pres. My dream became reality which I never will regret though the America I experienced was so much different from what I imagined. Before I came I was prepared to have some problems in the beginning but I must say teachers students and family made it so much easier for me so I can only remember Marion as a great experience. I thank students and teachers for being so helpful and open about America and have never made so many friends before so I can only say You guys are Great! Kaerlig Hilsen Peder L. Miller We came off the '83 season in excellent shape. Winning the Class A Sectionals, beating Kendall in the state qualifiers, and going to the Western finals was just fantastic. The '84 season saw eight starters back from that team and a fine group coming up from J.V. l per- sonally felt there wasn't a weak spot at any position and the bench looked better than ever. The first half of the year we beat HAC 2-0, NRW 3-1, Victor 8-1, Sodus 6-1, Williamson 8- 0. Pal-Mac 7-O, and we took both Wayne and Red Creek into overtime before they finally Tl-i-captain3g Coach J, Corney, M, Purkiss, J, G0dSey, W. DSLYSBI' defeated us. Everything was looking gust great. Woody was recovering from a knee injury without any problems. The only players with any serious bruises were Newby and Steurrys, but knowing them, they would play 100 'Vo even if they had to crawl to the game. We were basically in position A. It was like a dream come true. But the only trouble was that someone had to awaken us to the second halt of the year. All in all, you must have the breaks with you. Soccer is like that - either lucky or unlucky. In the Wayne game, we banged 3 solid shots off the goal posts. Against Canadaigua, we had 3 goals called back with that game ending in a tie. We outshot Williamsonn 31-15 with 13 corner kicks to their 4, and as luck would have it, another tie. Our season ended 6-4-2 in league play and 10-7-3 overall. We had six fine athletes make the All-County Team: Newby, Steurrys and Gabriel - first team, Purkiss, Todd VanderBrook and Delyser - second team. Brozoski received honorable mention at the goal position. My personal thanks to the team for all their effort. I do hope that somehow their soccer ex- perience will help them in making the many decisions that life throws at them. Seniors: Row 1: Coach J. Corney, J. Godsey, N. Morgan, B. Cramer, B. The team finished with a 12 win 8 loss record overall. They finished fourth in the Wayne County League at 9 and 7. Highlights were wins over Lyons at Lyons in December and over previously undefeated Clyde- Savannah at Clyde. The Knights advanced to the third round of Sectionals before losing to Caledonia-Mumford to end the season. We are proud of these boys and compliment them for their hard work. Countless hours were spent in the gym and at camp over the past few off-seasons to improve themselves and the team. They have set a standard that future players are already working hard to maintain. The team was dominated by seniors that will be missed greatly next November. Stuart Mitchell led the team in scoring and rebounding. He scored 361 points for 18 per game, in- cluding his career 1,000th vs. Kendall. He also grabbed 276 rebounds. Woody DeLyser, our very able point guard, led the Knights in assists with 62 and 124 steals in his third Varsity season, He also added 191 points. Stuart was honored with a first team selection to the Wayne County All-Stars and Woody to the second team. Four other players scored over 100 points for the year. Seniors Steve VanHall 147, Todd VanderBrook 132, and Mike Ramsey 111, and Junior Roman Brozoski 113, All contributed to a balanced attack. Senior Butch Steurrys was on his way to the 100 mark when he was lost to an injury after 12 games, The returning Juniors and additions from a very successful JV team promise to keep our winters exciting at MCS. Congratulations go out to the boys and their successful season. Thanks to our parents and friends who followed us all year. Seniors: Row 1: T. VanderBrook, W. DeLyser, Mitchell, R. Steurrys, S. The hours fly swiftly, and the need That presses on yourfellowman May fade away at equal speed And you may sigh before the end That you have failed to play the friend. Not all life's pride is born of fameg Not all the joy from work is won. Too late we hang our heads in shame, Remembering good we could have done: Too late we wish that we had stayed To comfort those who called for aid. Take time to do the little things Which leave the satisfactory thought, When other joys have taken wings, That we have labored as we ought: That in a world where all contend, We often stopped to be a friend. - Edgar A. Guest , .Jalan A-, 92 We are all travellers in the wilderness of this world, and the best that we find in our travels is an honest friend. - Robert Louis Stevenson lf a man could mount to Heaven and survey the mighty universe, his admiration of its beauties would be much diminished unless he had a friend to share in his pleasure. - Cicero With such a comrade, such a friend, I fain would walk till journeys end, Through summer sunshine, winter rain, And then? - Farewell, we shall meet again! - Henry van Dyke Man is forced to be alone by the very nature of society. Fisher 1984 was a very busy year for the band. ln the spring we went to two pageants. In Cazanovia our Jazz Band came in second, our concert band came in first, and our Marching Band also came in first. ln Gorham, Marching and Concert both received second place while Jazz came in third. We were the class B overall champs. The Marching Band marched in three parades in the spring. ln the Apple Blossom Parade we came ln second with our Color Guard tying for first. We also attended the Ses- quicentennial Parade in Rochester. In May we marched in our own Memorial Day Parade. The Fall of '84 started out exciting. We had a student teacher, Miss Karen Kohl. The Concert Band was asked to play at the Republican Rally in Rochester for President Reagan. We had our fall concert and hosted Sr. High Area All-State. We had our annual Christmas Concert. In February we went to Newark for a Band in the Round concert. The Seniors' last concert was March 27. In the spring we attended the Seneca Falls and Gorham Band pageants. . i I1 Band Flow 1: C. Betty received her B.S. in Education at the University of Cincinnati. She raised four children while pursuing her career in teaching. Betty devoted 20 years to teaching young people at M.C.S. Many Marion alumni have fond memories of Betty as their first teacher. Besides working with young people, Betty enjoys music, swimming, reading, handwork, and travel. We wish her luck and happiness in her retirement. She will be missed by us all. f. l-X ,wx .-5 V P A x if: 6- n ? 1 1 , J f UQ Q A 1 Q? la f II I .
