Pfere you will see our new school, new administrator and staff members, and new students. Changes are stimulating in more ways than one. They can lift our spirits, they can present unseen problems. The best laid plans of mice and men can often go astray , and we found it necessary to alter class schedules and our schedules. A ten-minute lunch break was reinstituted after a few weeks' trial without one. Teachers sometimes had problems securing enough desks for their larger classes, and they seemed at a loss sometimes in finding places to store their supplies. However, by Christmas.we had a settled feeling and realized the little problems could not dampen our pride and delight in our new surroundings. Having the largest gymnasium in Wayne County, we were able to hold a Christmas tournament here. The spacious and beautiful auditorium has made every assembly a special occasion. Wall-to-wall carpeting provided a real educational challenge: how to avoid electrocution or how to induce it. Cheerful colors and new furnishings have afforded us daily delight. Another innovation was the introduction of the unquestioned pass for honor students - a real inducement to work for grades, Did we forget the elementary school? Hardly! High school students welcomed any activity held there as they sincerely missed it. Many athletic practices were held there and many junior high athletic events. Teachers missed teachers and friends missed friends. lt is good to know the Board of Education now plans necessary repairs and a general redecoration of the elementary building. Marion was proud of its growth! ,Q z 115124, 1. 'es' rs 'kafsriaii . BOVET School Physician Dedication With respect and sincerity, we dedicate the 1969 Noiram to our district principal, Mr. Chester VV. Curtis. Mr. Curtis has been supervising principal of Marion since luly 1, 1954. His new title came with the addition of our new high school building this year. Mr. Curtis' sound educational background and his varied teaching experiences helped him develop a sound philosophy of educational leadership. He proudly claims Cornell University as his Alma Mater, earning his Bachelorfs degree there in 1939, ln 1947 he received his Masters degree from St. Lawrence University. He took additional courses at Cornell, Syracuse, and the University of Rochester, and in September, 1949, earned his principal's certificate and his superintendents certificate in September, 1955, Mr. Curtis taught in New York State public schools for ten years and was supervising principal of Hammond Central School for five years before coming to Marion. He has witnessed tremendous growth in the Marion Central School. After suffering a space problem for years, he has realized the dream of many: our beautiful new school. He has served the community well in Rotary and the church. We are sure that the desire to honor Mr. Curtis extends far outside the walls of our school. 7 4 MR, CHESTER W. CURTIS District Principal We vvill forever strive to preserve the ideals and sacred things of the city, both alone and with many, vve vvill unceasingly seek to quicken the sense of public duty, we vvill revere and obey the city's lavvs, vve vvill turn out this city, not only less, but greater, better and more beautiful than it vvas transmitted us. - from The Oath of the Athenian City State These ideas formulated by the Athenian City-State 2000 years ago apply today to our tovvn, our country, and our vvorldg tomorrovv they will also apply to our universe as vve explore the new horizons of the moon and space first visited by Uri Gagarin and Alan Shepard. ln our time, vve must be fit physically, mentally, and emotionally to face the many new horizons to be explored in the advancement of civilization. We had new people to meet and new things to do. At Christmas time we rode on a train and saw Santa Claus. Upon entering first grade, each of us knew how to write his own name! We went to the zoo and also held a magic show during the year. While in second grade, we visited the Rochester Police and Fire stations. We also learned a great deal about seeds this year. The visit to the cold storage plant, where we saw what had been a real bear, was very interesting. ln third grade, we held a seed sale. We then went on a trip to the Rochester depot and from there rode on a train to Newark. As fourth graders we visited the canning factory and the museum. We enjoyed hunting fossils at Mintith Point and then eating our lunch at Roseland Park while we were in fifth grade. As sixth-graders we took a field trip to Mendon Ponds. We handled the American junior Red Cross drive and also sent a CARE package to Korea during the year. During our first year in junior high we participated in another field trip. This one was to the Farmer's Museum, the Hall of Fame, and the Woodland Museum. We also sponsored our first money-making project, a movie called H1001 Arabian Nights . In eighth grade we broke tradition by sponsoring, as the annual eighth grade supper, a spaghetti supper instead of the usual chicken barbecue. As Freshmen, we held a record hop in May. Music was furnished by the Nite Raiders of Newark. Our sophomore year brought two major projects: the Soph Hop in November, and the sophomore smorgasbord in May. Last year we sold stationery. We also held a junior dance, and our long-awaited class rings finally arrived! Our senior year brought even more fun and excitement! All three of our final projects proved to be very successful. We worked on the fair booth, the magazine sale, and the senior play. Under the direction of Mrs. Helen Fleegel, our play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay , was a complete success, as well as lots of fun! We come nearer to our trip to Washington and eventually graduation, we begin to realize how much fun our years at Marion Central have been. We will never forget all of our good times here. Members of the class wish to thank Mr. and Mrs. Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. DeRue, Mr. and Mrs. Loftus, Mr. and Mrs. Fleegel, Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson and all others who helped us in our senior year and in years past. This past year we tried something different to get the students to be more cooperative with the bus drivers, as far as safety is concerned. We held bus emergency drills in the spring. When students arrived at school, they were asked to get of'f the bus through the back exit. ln this way the students learned what they were to do in case of a fire or other emergency while they were on the bus. All of our bus drivers are to be commended for getting the students safely to and from school each day, and for their assistance and teaching at the time of the drills. Credit is also due Mr. Rice and Mr. Thorne for good maintenance of our bus system. 21Cf1V1t1GS Publications , ll.lLl Hlllliiill Seated: F. Halstead, B. Roberts, V. jackson, K. Thiele, V. Wyse, D. Many people outside of school have also contributed time and effort toward this goal. Mr. Anthony Bruculere, our yearbook representative from American Yearbook.Co., has been a great help and is always on hand for guidance. Mr. Douglas Orbaker has spent several days at school taking the formal pictures, and Mr. William Liddle has assisted us this year in taking candids. Other advisors have been Mrs. Anna Patterson, literary, Mr. Harold Spencer, art, and Mrs. Marjorie L. lansen, business. The editor-in-chief, Ginny Zawadzki, deserves mention for handling her duties and responsibilities so faithfully. She has been assisted by Sue Clark, associate editor. These girls worked regularly two eighth periods each week, and spent many hours out of school on their assignments. Club activities consisted of selling pop and popcorn at wrestling matches and at the basketball tournament in December. Members have worked after school hours to get advertisements and to round up sources of information, and have helped sell and distribute this book. This year's Cross Country team was probably the best since the sport has been in Marion Central's Athletic program. The over-all record was thirty-six wins to six losses. Marion entered the county meet with a record of 6-1 and won the event, thus creating a tie for the County Championship with North Rose-Wolcott. Each team had identically 13-1 records. Marion was awarded the trophy on the basis that they had scored fewer points in all the combined meets. Don Neill and Gene Storey won trophies for second and fourth places respectively. The top achievement was when the team represented Wayne County in the Section 5, Class C Championship meet. The boys made a fine showing by capturing third place in a field of twenty-one schools. Don Neill won a Section 5 shield for an individual fourth place finish. Ski Club Row 7: N. Nortier, I. Shoales, D. Franks, B. Stone, D. Crane E. Freeman, B. Wlleghe, S. Our team always showed hustle until the gun went off. We had more than our share of close games and overtimes. We, as well as the Varsity, were hurt Ioy injuries. We are looking forward to more victories next year and more of those weli-played games. Co Captains Donald Neill and Derwent lackson Wrestling Our wrestling team was successful this year in more ways than one. We started out with 36 hoys trying out lor the squad, and Z6 finished the season, We linished the year vvith an impressive 94 record. We vvrestled in tvvo leagues, The Wayne League and Finger Lakes League, playing second in hoth leagues. We also participated in tvvo winter tournaments. Even though we did not have a 95-Ih, wrestler all year, the other hoys, under the direction of Co-Captains Don Neill and Derry Iackson, vvorked hard enough to overcome the deficit, Graduating seniors this year include Derry jackson, Don Neill, Dave Copp, todd Mason, and Verdell jackson. Though the challenge was great, the team always kept their determination to win. Perhaps one of the most exciting games of the season was when our opponents from Pal-Mac were defeated by the Knights. The score at the first quarter was tied 12-12. The second quarter also resulted in close competition with a score of 23-22 in favor of Marion. The third quarter ended with the Knights maintaining a small lead of 37-30. Then, in the last part of the second half, the boys pulled ahead to compile a score of 53-41, thus making a comeback over their once victorious foes. Some of the outstanding players this season were Paul Ressue 1108 field goals and 140 free throws - 356 pts.l, lohn DeLyser Q76 field goals and 179 free throws - 331 pts.j,,and lim LaClair Q50 field goals and 131 free throws - 231 PYS-l Unfortunately, the team will lose two of its best players when Tim Young and Steve Smith are graduated this year. The classes took several nature walks through town and made trips to various farms around the area. During the Christmas season they visited a Plaza in Rochester, to see the many decorations. ln February, kindergarteners went to the Shrine Circus, and completed the year with a visit to Lollypop Farm.
